Week 1. Year 1. ✅🧊📚

That’s a wrap on the very first week of Steel Ice Sports Academy.

Before our student-athletes headed out for the long Labor Day weekend, we checked in with Brody and John for one last Week 1 report.

Brody’s assessment of his first week?

“Very good.”

Classes?

“Extremely good.” 😎

Now he’s looking forward to the long weekend — and maybe getting in a little fishing with Dad. 🎣

John had a pretty simple review of his first week:

“It was fun. I like it.”

Favorite part? Hockey. Obviously. 🏒

More specifically, getting to work on his shot — which should come in handy considering he’s heading straight from Week 1 of SISA into a four-game showcase this weekend.

From Monday morning’s first-ever arrival to Friday afternoon’s final check-in, our inaugural class officially has its first week in the books.

A whole lot more ahead.

We’ve got Public Skates, Stick Times, and Coffee Club on the schedule this weekend, so whether you’re looking to hit the ice with the family, get in some extra puck time, or enjoy a relaxing skate with coffee in hand, we’ve got something for you.

Please note: Steel Ice Center will be CLOSED on Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day.

🏒 Developmental League – Player of the Practice 🏒

We’ve got another one! Congratulations to Knox, Wednesday night’s Developmental League Player of the Practice! 👏

Knox was putting in the work — and putting pucks in the net — during the shooting station with former Phantoms star and Hobey Baker Award finalist Coach Greg Carey.

So naturally, when we asked Knox his favorite part of practice:

We’re sensing a theme here.

Knox is also officially back in school and starting first grade, although we may need another week or two before we get the teacher’s name completely figured out. 😂

But the most important question of these early-season interviews continues to deliver: What’s the ideal post-practice meal?

Last time, Ayla gave us steak.

Knox decided to raise the stakes.

Apparently our Developmental League players have developed some very expensive post-practice expectations. Sorry, parents. 😂

Day 2. Year 1. 🧊📚

Another day, another check-in with our inaugural class at Steel Ice Sports Academy.

Today we caught up with Tye, Logan and Jacob to see how Day 2 was going.

Tye is balancing 11th-grade chemistry — compounds and all — with what he says is still the best part of the day: hockey.

Logan is settling into the academic block and enjoying getting back on the ice.

And Jacob already had a full academic day with an English test, science vocabulary and math before turning his attention back to training.

That’s what life at SISA looks like.

Academics. Training. Development. Repeat.

Day 2 is underway, and our student-athletes are already getting into the rhythm.

🏒 Developmental League – Player of the Practice 🏒

Monday night means another Developmental League skill session and another Player of the Practice!

Congratulations to Ayla, tonight’s Player of the Practice! 👏

It’s Ayla’s first year in D-League, and the first grader is already settling right in. She told us she LOVES school — but when forced to make the very difficult choice between school and hockey practice…

🏒 HOCKEY PRACTICE!

That’s the answer we were looking for. 😂

Ayla worked hard all night and earned herself Player of the Practice honors — which apparently deserves a pretty serious post-practice meal:

🥩 Dinner of choice: STEAK. No chicken nuggets here. Ayla has expensive taste.

We also got to meet the rest of the family:

Both even got their own shoutouts during the interview!

Meet the inaugural class of Steel Ice Sports Academy.

These 16 student-athletes are the ones who get to say they were here at the very beginning.

Hockey players.
Figure skaters.
Students.
Teammates.
Dreamers.

Some want to become hockey players or Olympians. Others wrote down firefighter, artist, veterinarian, pediatric surgeon, business owner and even YouTuber.

And that’s exactly the point.

Steel Ice Sports Academy was created to develop more than what happens on the ice. We’re here to challenge these student-athletes academically, athletically and personally while giving them the opportunity to pursue the things they’re passionate about.

Today was their first day.

Years from now, these photos will tell the story of where it all started.

Today officially marks the first day of Steel Ice Sports Academy — and the beginning of our inaugural year.

We caught up with a few of our student-athletes throughout the day to see how things were going.

John and Nate are part of our hockey track.
Riley, Sawyer, and Blair are part of our figure skating track.

Different sports. Different goals. One Academy.

From chemistry and nutrition to battles, jumps, skating classes and learning something completely new, Day 1 gave our athletes their first taste of what life at SISA is going to look like.

And this is only the beginning.

Over the coming weeks and months, we’re going to bring you inside the Academy and let you get to know the student-athletes who are building something brand new with us.

Fall Session 1 of Learn to Skate is coming to Steel Ice Center — and registration is OPEN!

Whether your skater is taking their very first steps on the ice, building toward hockey or figure skating, or simply looking for a fun new activity, there’s a place for them in Learn to Skate.
