Most athletes are doing cleans when they should be doing high pulls.

The high pull is one of the best exercises for developing explosive power without the technical learning curve of Olympic lifting.

Here's why:

✅ Triple extension of the ankles, knees, and hips
✅ Develops rate of force production
✅ Trains violent hip extension
✅ Builds athletic carryover for sprinting, jumping, tackling, wrestling, and striking
✅ Less wrist, shoulder, and mobility requirements than a clean

The biggest mistake?

Trying to muscle the bar up with the arms.

The arms are just the finish. The power comes from driving through the floor and violently extending the hips.

Think:
"Jump hard, then pull."

For most athletes, 3-5 sets of 3-5 reps works great. Keep the reps explosive and stop before speed drops off.

If you're trying to become faster, more powerful, and more athletic, the high pull deserves a spot in your program.

Darren Coleman's physical transformation has been truly impressive, I had the opportunity to train him for his last two fight camps. The results were crazy, with significant fat loss and muscle gain. The before-and-after comparison is truly remarkable.

Heart rate feels fine.

But your arms won't fire.

Your legs feel like concrete.

And suddenly your body isn't responding the way you want it to.

That's not a cardio problem.

That's a lactic acid resistance problem.

One of my favorite ways to train it:

🔥 8 Hard Sled Rows
🔥 10 Explosive Decline Push-Ups

No rest.

5-8 rounds.

The goal isn't to leave the session out of breath. The goal is to keep producing force when fatigue is flooding the muscles.

This is where athletes break down.

Not because they're tired.

Because they can't maintain power once the burn sets in.

Train your ability to move fast, stay explosive, and keep attacking when your body is begging you to slow down.

That's a different kind of conditioning.
