Tucked away in the Crystal Basin, Union Valley Reservoir is one of those California fisheries that deserves a lot more attention than it gets.

Rainbows, trophy browns, mackinaw topping 20 pounds, kokanee—and even a sleeper smallmouth fishery—make this one seriously interesting piece of water.

Blue skies, beautiful water and hungry stripers—Tucker got a taste of just how much fun fall on the California Delta can be yesterday!

The stripers were snapping, the weather was gorgeous and it was simply one of those days that reminds you why September is such a great time to be on the California Delta.

TUESDAY TROUT TIP

When surface temperatures are 65 degrees or below, don’t assume you need to go deep to find actively feeding trout.

Under those conditions, I almost always keep at least one lure working in the top 10 feet, particularly early and late in the day. And anytime a breeze puts some chop on the water, that shallow zone becomes even more important. Wind-generated current, broken surface light and increased oxygen can encourage feeding trout to move right up near the surface.

Don’t let your sonar talk you out of fishing shallow, either. Your sonar cone is very narrow near the surface, and active trout may move away from the boat before passing beneath the transducer. You can have excellent fishing in the top few feet while your screen is showing most of the fish considerably deeper.

The deepest trout you see aren't necessarily the most catchable trout. Sometimes the most aggressive fish in the lake are right under the surface.

TROUT TACTICS: DON’T OVERTHINK IT

Trout fishing can get pretty technical, but sometimes one of the oldest tricks in the book is still one of the best:

A blade and a nightcrawler.

I’ve caught trout all over the West trolling worms behind blades. The blade provides flash and vibration to attract fish, while that slowly rolling crawler gives them something natural to finish the deal.

You can also take the same basic idea in different directions. Run a crawler by itself for a subtle presentation, or team a piece of crawler with a trolling fly when you want a little extra scent, taste and movement.

The important part is don't kill the action with too much worm. A little bit can go a long way.

There are days when we need to experiment with speed, depth, colors and sophisticated presentations to unlock the bite.

And then there are days when trout remind us:

Put a worm behind something shiny and go fishing. 😂

Delta Striper Tip: Why Put a Worm Behind a Minnow Plug?

If you've spent much time around serious Delta striper trollers, you've probably noticed something unusual hanging off the back of their Yo-Zuris and other minnow plugs—a full-size 6- to 8-inch plastic Trick Worm.

Why?

That long worm adds a completely different dimension to the plug. The minnow bait provides the wobble, flash and vibration, while the soft plastic trails behind with a seductive swimming action of its own. It makes the overall presentation look bigger, adds movement and gives following stripers another target to attack.
White is the traditional go-to color, but don't be afraid to experiment. Chartreuse, pink and other colors can produce when the fish decide they want something different.

The important thing is to rig the worm so the plug continues to track and work properly. Check it beside the boat before sending it back.
