My wife Mandy and I recently paid a trip to Oregon and snuck up to Timberline Lodge for some hiking and big mountain views. I was not prepared for the incredible art, craftsmanship, and ski history found in this special place!

I am forever blown away by the craftsmanship that resulted from the Works Progress Administration. What a dynamic time for artists, engineers and craftspeople to execute their vision for the benefit of the public. I’m grateful to the USFS for maintaining and preserving this one-of-a-kind historic structure.

Now I just need to get up there to ski and climb!

Here’s the journey from conception to reality. This Big Sky Mountain Village map was quite an undertaking! I’ve yet to paint a more in-depth base village that helps skiers, snowboarders and summer visitors navigate around the base area. It was an honor (and a challenge) to capture this for Big Sky.

As always, it’s really wild to see my maps in use, printed large within the landscape they illustrate. It’s a weird disconnect for me - such a leap from the hours and hours in my studio to a large, printed map. It’s a great feeling knowing that people use them to navigate such a beautiful landscape. Can’t wait to work on the next project with Big Sky Resort—stay tuned!

I finally got the chance to ride Big Sky’s new Lone Peak Tram—it’s an engineering and architectural wonder! The Kircliff glass observatory perched on the peak is unreal. Walking out on the thick glass floor—thousands of feet up—is a unique experience that feels like defying gravity.

It was a riot speaking to Katie Bamber with Lannoo Publishers last year for her new Ski & Art book. It’s wild to see the finished book in person and admire all the other artists included in this awesome collection of inspiring winter lovers.

Visiting Big Sky Resort was so wonderful this weekend! My wife Mandy joined me and we made a day of riding the new Explorer gondola, the Lone Peak Tram and then hiking around and down. Now I’m not sure which season I prefer on Lone Peak, winter or summer! The place is spectacular any season of the year, with so much to do for anyone that wants to enjoy and explore the area. We’ll be taking our mountain bikes next time…

Happy little trees. I’m perfecting my process for creating deep shadows and gradations of shadow on the snowy boughs. These trees are a little bigger than what I typically work with for a terrain map and this has been an interesting piece of this particular map puzzle.
