Did you know Alaska has shipwrecks with Civil War-era cannons?
The ๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต was a 3-masted wooden ship sent with a compliment of artillery pieces in 1868, after the purchase of Alaska from Russia.
After leaving Kodiak and spotting what is now the Homer Spit, it grounded on a washboard reef and was completely pulverized by the tide and currents, which ripped the vessel apart.
The crew was unable to save the cargo and battery equipment, and was lucky to escape in lifeboats before the ship tore apart completely.
Today, you can still see a cannon from the wreck at the site of the sinking.
Alaska has a lot of WW2 era wreckage, including Japanese submarines of war, war planes, and moe, but you don't often think of the even older, and equally fascinating, maritime history of the water here.
It's always related to militaries and guns, with these wrecks, ain't it?
