Our 22 day countdown has reached its end – Happy International Dance Day! 🎉 We want to sincerely thank you for supporting our $22 for Tutus campaign, whether that was through a donation, engaging with our social media content, or sharing Amherst Ballet with your network.

International Dance Day marks the anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre’s birthday, who is often referred to as “the creator of modern ballet.” To align with this sentiment in our own way, we have one final Amherst Ballet image to share as part of our campaign. For over 50 years, Amherst Ballet has led with conviction of the value of dance in our society and commitment to providing quality dance education to our community. That all began with our founder, Therese Brady Donohue, shown in image 1 with her daughter. And, you may recognize image 2 as the kick-off photo from the campaign, featuring one of our advanced dancers with our current director Mikayla Archambeau’s daughter.

The resemblance is no coincidence! While much has changed over the years for Amherst Ballet, our core belief that dance is a gift to be shared, remains true. We thank you – our dancers, our families, our alumni, our supporters – for continuing to help us share this gift. 💝

But wait! It’s not too late to give to $22 for Tutus if you haven’t yet. We are just 7 donors away from reaching 22 unique donors – can you help us make it before the campaign closes at midnight?! Link to donate: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/B7HQVP78R36FL

It is already Day 20 of $22 for Tutus! With our content winding down, we hope that you’ve been enjoying our tutu-themed content and hearing about the impact of all gifts to Amherst Ballet, big or small. We kept it simple for today’s post to show off some tutus that haven’t been featured as much in this series, but are very special to us nonetheless. There’s still 2 days left to give and/or share our campaign with 2 friends!

Two Amherst Ballet company members walk into the nearest cafe - and the barista is in the company, too! One of the fun things about having a semi-professional ballet company in a small town is that we have family everywhere. Members of our company teach and study in local schools and universities and work in local businesses and organizations, including Futura Coffee Roasters in the Mill District. Check out Futura’s delicious arepas and fun seasonal drinks, as well as their cappuccinos and mochas and matcha… (Yes, we spend a lot of time over there!). When you give to Amherst Ballet, it contributes to the vitality of our interconnected local community. Link to donate: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/B7HQVP78R36FL

Day 18🎉 Summer workshops and tutus aren’t just for pre-professional or older dancers! We also have plenty of opportunities for our youngest movers, like our Creative Movement classes. Through imaginative games and improvisation, dancers explore the building blocks of movement and sound—direction, level, tempo, rhythm, texture, melody, and shape—while developing strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. We are also working to bring free Creative Movement opportunities to open venues throughout the Valley as part of our outreach efforts. When you give to Amherst Ballet, you help us introduce young people to dance and lay a strong foundation for a lifelong love of movement and the arts.

It’s Day 17 of $22 for Tutus! Today’s post features three of our dancers performing a variation from Fairy Doll at the end of last year’s “back-to-ballet” week-long summer intensive. The dancer in the center is wearing what’s known as a “practice tutu” which helps dancers acclimate to the feel and experience of wearing a tutu, while preserving the delicate nature of the final costume. All the dancers in this video are now also in our Junior Company! Giving to Amherst Ballet helps us offer more pre-professional experiences to young dancers, along with workshops outside of our typical class schedule. Our summer classes and workshops are open for registration now! More information: https://amherstballet.org/summer-programs/

Wait a minute, that’s not a tutu! Not exactly - today’s $22 for Tutus post shows off our “pre-loved” retail shop for dancers and families to pick up dance attire from Amherst Ballet. Items in our retail shop are currently sold by suggested donation, and all proceeds go back to our costume care and repair efforts. Though not seen in this image, we have had some child-size tutus in the past - stop by and see what you can find!

Day 15! Look closely and you will see the tutu in these videos ☺️
At Amherst Ballet, we believe that musicians are part of the choreographic and dance experience, and we deeply value the collaborative process that comes with this. Our Spring Show this season (June 5-7) will feature a string quartet of local professional musicians, which we hope will allow dancers and audience members to experience music they have likely not heard before in a deep and meaningful way. We are also very grateful to work with Amy Rose, featured in these videos, who accompanies some of our ballet classes in the studio. When you support Amherst Ballet, you support local musicians and the music education of our dancers.

It’s Day 14 of $22 for Tutus and we want you to know that tutus can be worn by anyone! While tutus originally evolved as women’s costumes, this has expanded over the years. At Amherst Ballet, we actively work to question and reimagine ballet norms to teach with an ever-evolving inclusive approach. In addition to our dress code, dancers of any gender are supported in learning the full range of ballet technique; we do not restrict access to pointe training or traditional men’s technique. When you give to Amherst Ballet, you help propel inclusion in dance. Link to donate: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/B7HQVP78R36FL

Today’s post features another very special collection of tutus that have been with Amherst Ballet for quite some time. With support from the Amherst and South Hadley Local Cultural Councils, some of these tutus are on our list to repair and showcase at our End of Year Celebration and Costume Exhibit on June 14th from 2-5pm at the studio. Save the date and see you there! In the blue tutu is Casey, one of our board members who is an alum and now a parent at Amherst Ballet as well. Giving to Amherst Ballet helps foster generations of dancers and dance enthusiasts.

Did you know that in addition to our Winter and Spring shows, Amherst Ballet hosts pop-up performances throughout the community free of charge? It’s true! Today’s $22 for Tutus campaign is from a recent community performance event held at the Hadley Library. This performance told the story of the gifts the fairies give to Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, and ended with inviting audience members to dance with us. Amherst Ballet has steadily been expanding our outreach efforts to bring dance to libraries, parks, and more. When you give to Amherst Ballet, you help us continue to offer free opportunities like this.
