Ames Minor Hockey Association - AMHA Organized hockey for Central Iowa players ranging from ages 6-18. Focused on building fundamentals a Ames Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) was founded in 1973.

Skaters range from three years to 18 years old. AMHA currently has skaters from Story, Boone, Hamilton, Jasper, Marshall, and Polk counties. League divisions include: Mite, Sq**rt, P*e Wee, Bantam and High School. Teams practice up to three times a week and games/tournaments are on weekends. AMHA’s mission is to positively engage local youth in the fundamentals of hockey through sportsmanship, teamwork and character development.

Calling all Youth-High School Goalies!

Drew Perhson and Ryan Hooks are organizing a weekly summer goalie clinic at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena for goalies in central Iowa. Both are former Iowa State University Hockey Team goalies and current Ames Hockey coaches with junior hockey experience.

The clinic would include weekly 1-hour on-ice training sessions during June and July, pending enough interest to reserve ice time.

This year marks the 10th consecutive year of Behind the Mask training at AMHA. This year, our Goalies and Coaches worked every Thursday night since October 2nd on our skills. Our mission is to give athletes an opportunity to learn the skills they need to become the best goalies they can be. By having all ages from our High School athletes down to our 8U beginners working on their craft each week, they get to know each other and root each other on. Each week, there is a plan to work on a specific element of Goaltending in drills, foster a little competitive spirit, and then skating (because we could all be better at that)

Thank you to our goalie parents for supporting their athletes by bringing them to practice. Thank you to the shooters who provided good competition in our drills. Thank you to AMHA for your continued support of goalie development by providing us this time each week. We ended our year by hosting Goalie Games 2026 - the coaches even got suited up and played this year :)
