Want to stand out at a tournament? If you want to play college baseball...Start acting like a college baseball player. The best prospects don't just have talent—they develop the habits college coaches see every day.

Stay engaged. Support your teammates. Compete every pitch. Pay attention to the little things. When your habits already match the next level, coaches don't have to picture you there—they can already see it.

At the 17U WWBA, I'm seeing a big difference between instinctual and robotic base runners.

Robotic runners wait. They wait for the ball to hit the dirt before they break. They wait to see whether the outfielder catches the blooper before making a decision.

By then, it's often too late. Instinctual runners are reading the game. They're watching the trajectory of the pitch, reading the outfielder, making a decision, and committing to it.

That instinct doesn't happen by accident. It comes from practicing how to read the game—not just practicing how to run.

Players, learn to anticipate instead of waiting for the play to tell you what to do. Smart, instinctual base running will stand out.

If we want better baseball, we have to get back to teaching the fundamentals that win games. Travel baseball has a fundamental problem. I'm watching 17U players at one of the biggest tournaments in the country.

I'm seeing too many athletes who still struggle with the basics—tagging up, taking leads, bunting, or executing simple baseball fundamentals.

This isn't about criticizing kids.
It's about asking whether the adults are giving them what they truly need.

Parents invest thousands of dollars. Players spend years on the field. At the end of that journey, they should have a strong foundation in the game.

Showcases and exposure matter—but they can never replace player development.

Baseball isn't just a game—it's a language. Terms like "Texas Leaguer," "Frozen Rope," and "Squibber" have been part of baseball for generations. But when I started asking young players what they meant, most of them had no idea.
That's a piece of the game we can't afford to lose.

Understanding baseball's history and traditions helps you appreciate the game on a whole new level. It's something every player, parent, and grandparent can enjoy together.

I've put together a list of classic baseball terms. Check the links on my YouTube channel to download the PDF and see how many you already know.

Which classic baseball term is your favorite—or one you'd like me to explain next?

College coaches notice the little things. A player struck out, the ball hit the dirt, and instead of sprinting to first... he jogged. The coach beside me immediately lost interest.
Why?

Because hustle isn't something college coaches want to teach. They expect it.
The players who get recruited understand that every play is an opportunity to show who they are.

Talent gets you noticed. Effort keeps you on the recruiting board.
Would your hustle stand out to a college coach?

If you want to play college baseball, your body should reflect your goal. This might be tough to hear, but it's the truth. I see too many 17-year-olds showing up to national tournaments out of shape, slow, and unprepared. If you've had the dream of playing college baseball since you were 12 or 13, how does that happen?
Then your habits need to match your goals.

Showing up out of shape isn't just about fitness—it's a sign that the daily details are being ignored.

The players who stand out don't just practice. They take care of their bodies, fuel themselves well, and prepare as if the opportunity matters.

If you say your dream is to play at the next level, make sure your daily choices reflect that dream.

Are your habits moving you closer to your goals or pulling you away from them?

I’m on day 12 of being on the road, watching three to four games every day in 95-degree heat. I’m supporting clients, connecting with college coaches, and putting in the work. Do I enjoy every minute of it? Not always.

But that’s the point. Champions aren’t made when everything is easy. They’re built in the daily habits, the long days, and the moments when most people would rather quit.

If you want to help your player reach the next level, teach them to embrace the work that no one sees. That mindset will take them farther than talent alone ever will.

Question for you: What’s one part of the grind that has helped you or your player grow the most?🤔

"Where are the college coaches?" 👀⚾
They're at the events where the top players compete.
But getting seen isn't enough...
You have to be prepared when your opportunity comes.
The recruiting journey starts years before coaches are watching.

Do you know the 5 tools every college coach and MLB scout evaluates? âš¾
If you're serious about playing at the next level, you need to know them:

✅ Running Speed
✅ Hitting for Average
✅ Hitting for Power
✅ Defense
✅ Arm Strength

Here's the mistake many young players make...
They think, "I just want to be a good baseball player."
That's not enough.

Elite players stand out because they become exceptional at one or more of these tools—and they never stop improving the ones holding them back.

Coach Mark's own son had to completely transform his foot speed before college coaches believed he could compete at the next level.

The biggest key?
Get honest evaluations.

Don't surround yourself with people who only tell you how great you are. Surround yourself with people who tell you what you need to improve—and then go to work.

Stay hungry.
Stay coachable.
Keep developing.

👇 Which of the 5 tools is YOUR biggest strength? Which one are you working on the most?
