One of the greatest gifts we can give young athletes is teaching them that mistakes are not failures.
They’re opportunities.
As coaches, we see it all the time. A player boots a ground ball, makes a bad throw, or has a tough inning in the field. Instead of moving on, they start playing scared. They become hesitant. They stop attacking the baseball. They start worrying more about avoiding mistakes than making plays.
The reality is every great defender makes errors.
The difference is they don’t allow those moments to impact their confidence or change the way they compete.
TRUST your preparation.
A mistake can either become a roadblock or a lesson… the choice is in what you do next.
Mental toughness means showing up for the next pitch with the same confidence you had before the mistake happened. It’s knowing the next ball hit your way belongs to you.
Resilience is having the courage to want the baseball again, even after things didn’t go your way.
Great defenders aren’t defined by the mistakes they make. They’re defined by their ability to learn, reset, and compete at the highest level.
We don’t coach players to be perfect. We coach them to be competitors.
Don’t run from the fear of failure. Embrace the challenge. The greatest growth happens when you have the courage to attack what makes you uncomfortable.
