真(shin) 善 (zen) 美 (bi) can be translated as sincerity, a calm heart and beauty in action. These are essential goals in Japanese archery (kyudo).
With Japanese arts the goal is not just to win or to score points. Rooted in Zen Buddhism, traditional sports and arts are methods of spiritual and psychological training.
A form of education for the spirit, mastering an art in this way helps us to grow as human beings. We develop wisdom, patience, sincerity, calmness and concentration as we practice an art form mindfully.
