How to get quick feet — with a drill that looks much easier than it actually is.

This simple footwork drill only requires a line on the ground. Step over with your right foot, then your left, and back again as quickly as possible for 20 seconds. Then switch sides and repeat.

Simple? Yes. Easy? Not quite.

As JayMike from our friends at Unisport found out, those 20 seconds can feel very long when you're going all out.

A great little drill to work on quick feet, coordination and foot speed — and one you can easily add to your football training.

From Norway to Wolfsburg: Following Roseline Bui Andersen’s Journey
Tanner Speed Academy CEO Carsten Effertz recently visited Roseline Bui Andersen in Wolfsburg, where the young Norwegian talent has been playing since moving to Germany last summer.

But for Tanner Speed Academy, Roseline’s story in Wolfsburg is just the latest chapter of a relationship that began several years ago.

Roseline has been training with Tanner Speed for the past four to five years. This has given Carsten the opportunity to follow her development from a young age and support her through important stages of her football journey.

Quick feet are an important part of running faster. The faster you can move your legs, the more steps you can take in a given amount of time — and elite sprinters take this to an incredible level.

Athletes like Oblique Seville can take around 47 steps over 100 metres, meaning their legs are moving at an extremely high frequency. That ability to produce and repeat movement so quickly is a huge part of what makes elite sprinters so fast.

Of course, not everyone is going to have the same natural ability. Some athletes are simply born with better genetics for speed, and not everyone will have the same ceiling.

But that’s not the point.

Training isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about finding your own maximum potential and getting as close to it as possible.

Your nervous system, muscles, and coordination can all be trained to produce faster, more efficient movements — and quick feet are something you can develop through training.

Whether you train at home, with your club, in the gym, or simply add a few speed drills to your routine, consistent training can help you improve.

You might not have the genetics to be the fastest person on the field.

But you can work towards reaching your full potential as an athlete.

Speed in football is more than just running fast.

This agility ladder drill challenges players to combine quick footwork, coordination, rhythm and body control.

Active footwork
Short ground-contact times
Coordination at speed

Fast transitions between movement patterns

Don’t get too obsessed with your top speed. ️

Yes, top speed is a nice number to have. It looks impressive, it’s easy to compare, and everyone gets excited when a player hits 35, 36 or 37 km/h.

But in football, how quickly you can reach your speed is often much more important.

Those first 5–7 metres can be the difference between getting to the ball first, creating separation from your opponent, or getting caught.

That’s why acceleration is such an important part of what we work on at Tanner Speed Academy. We want players to become faster where it actually matters on the pitch — not just improve a number on a GPS report.

So yes, top speed is nice. But being able to accelerate quickly, repeatedly, and use that speed effectively in football is a different story.

Don’t just chase top speed. Learn to use your speed.
