Against All Odds: The Inspiring Journey of Young Para Athlete Francis Ramos
At only 13 years old, Franciss Tiburcio Ramos of Llanera, Nueva Ecija has already faced challenges that many people could never imagine enduring in a lifetime. Yet despite the pain, loss, and struggles he experienced at a young age, Francis chose not to surrender to despair. Instead, he transformed his hardships into motivation, becoming an inspiration to many through sports and perseverance.
Francis is a visually impaired athlete who also lost his right hand due to a tragic accident when he was only eight years old. An unexploded device suddenly changed his life forever, leaving him physically wounded and forcing him to adapt to a new reality. For most children, such an experience could have ended dreams and confidence. But for Francis, it became the beginning of a remarkable story of courage and determination.
Today, Francis proudly stands as one of the most promising young para athletes in Central Luzon. During the CLRAA 2026 ParaGames, he brought honor to his hometown after winning two gold medals in the long jump and 100-meter dash, along with a silver medal in shot put. His outstanding performance earned him a spot in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa this May.
Behind every medal is a story of sacrifice, discipline, and resilience. According to his mother, Venus Ramos, Francis became the source of strength for their family after the accident. Despite his condition, he remained cheerful and optimistic, helping his parents slowly accept what had happened.
โHe taught us how to move forward,โ his mother shared. โInstead of losing hope, he continued to smile and dream.โ
Aside from sports, Francis also excelled academically. Before and even after the accident, he consistently performed well in school, proving that his determination extended far beyond the athletic field. His teachers and coaches recognized not only his talent but also his positive attitude and unwavering dedication.
Francis discovered his passion for athletics while studying at Talavera Central School. With the guidance of his coach, he first trained in running before eventually trying long jump and shot put. As time passed, his skills continued to improve, leading him to victory after victory.
Now part of the Special Program for Sports, Francis trains daily to further develop his abilities and prepare for bigger competitions ahead. Despite the physical limitations he faces, he continues to prove that disability is never a barrier to success when paired with courage, hard work, and faith.
For the Ramos family, Francis is more than a champion athlete. He is a living reminder that strength is not measured by physical perfection, but by the ability to rise after every fall.
His story serves as an inspiration not only to persons with disabilities but also to anyone facing struggles in life. Through determination, family support, and self-belief, Franciss Ramos continues to show the world that no obstacle is too great for someone who refuses to give up.
