Hidden beneath the reef, the frogfish reminds us that beauty doesn’t always have to be obvious

surprising frogfish facts

🐸 They’re masters of camouflage — some frogfish can look almost exactly like sponges, corals, or rocks.

🎣 They fish without swimming after their prey — they use a modified fin that works like a fishing rod and lure.

⚡ Their strike is incredibly fast — they can expand their mouth and suck in prey in just milliseconds.

🚶 They can “walk” on the seafloor using their modified pectoral fins instead of swimming normally.

👀 Some can change color to better match their surroundings, although the process can take days or weeks.

😮 They can swallow surprisingly large prey because their mouths can expand dramatically.

🦐 Their lure looks like food and is waved in front of potential prey to attract them.

🫥 They can practically disappear in plain sight — even experienced divers can swim right past one.

🌊 They’re not great swimmers because their bodies are built more for ambush hunting than chasing prey.

🧡 They come in incredibly weird and beautiful shapes and colors, making them one of the coolest animals to spot while diving.

Problems equalizing when diving head first? Let’s identify which issue you might have first.

1. Sinus congestion or blockage?
Ideally, we want to dive with healthy, clear sinus cavities. If you're congested, equalization can become difficult or even impossible. Try to avoid diving when sick or congested, and pay attention to things that personally trigger congestion for you. A congested diver is a troubled diver.

2. Only one ear pops or equalizes?
This can sometimes happen when one side isn’t clearing properly through the Eustachian tube. Some divers find that sleeping with the blocked side facing up, staying hydrated, breathing warm steam, and doing light movement or warm-up exercises before diving may help them feel more open and relaxed.

3. Can’t equalize both ears?
First, make sure you can equalize comfortably out of the water. If dry equalization works but becomes difficult once you go head down, one possible reason is soft palate positioning.

The soft palate controls airflow between your mouth and nasal passages. If air isn’t moving efficiently, equalization becomes harder. The soft palate can also close due to your body reacting to being suberged in water make sure to relax during your dives.

One exercise you can try:
Lay at the edge of your bed up to your hips, then slowly lower your upper body so your head points toward the floor. While changing angles, practice equalizing gently.

Here’s the key:
You should be able to equalize from multiple positions. If you reach an angle where equalization stops, move back slightly and find the position where it works again.
You may repeat this many times during practice.

Another option is using an EQ training balloon/tool to help build awareness and control (EQ Tool tutorial in future videos 👀).

Remember: practice makes perfect. We can’t spend all our time training in the water, so dry equalization practice helps a lot. While scrolling your phone, sitting in the car, or just relaxing , practice gently and consistently.

What is a Freediving Hang?
In Freediving, a hang is a training technique where a diver descends to a specific, comfortable depth and remains completely still for a set amount of time.
This practice helps the body adapt to pressure, calms the mind, and strengthens the mammalian dive reflex.
But a hang is more than just training. It’s about the experience. The silence, the stillness, and the feeling of complete relaxation underwater makes it one of the most incredible experiences a freediver can have.

A pool noodle is not something people usually think about when it comes to freediving,
but it’s actually one of the most useful tools for relaxation.
We don’t need to rely on it, but it can help when relaxing feels difficult.
One great position is placing it under the knees while lying down, giving a floating feeling similar to lying in bed.
Another position is placing it under the crouch area, which gives extra support and stability in rough water.

Here are 5 simple but powerful tips to level up your Dynamic Apnea:

1. Streamline your body
A proper streamline position is one of the most important freediving techniques. Keep your body long, arms extended, and minimize drag in the water. The more streamlined you are, the less energy and oxygen you use during your dynamic apnea.

2. Fix your body posture
Good body position in freediving means staying flat, relaxed, and aligned in the water. Avoid bending at the waist, and gently push your hips forward to keep a clean, streamlined shape. An efficient posture reduces drag, conserves oxygen, and helps improve your dynamic apnea performance.

3. Keep a neutral neck position
Your head position affects your entire body line. Looking forward creates resistance and tension. Keep your neck relaxed and look down to maintain proper freediving alignment and better hydrodynamics.

4. Improve your finning technique
Strong but relaxed finning is key for dynamic apnea training. Kick from your hips, not your knees, and keep your movements smooth and controlled. Efficient finning reduces fatigue and helps you swim longer distances underwater.

5. Master the glide phase
One of the most underrated freediving tips is learning how to glide. After each kick, allow yourself to glide and use momentum instead of constantly kicking. This saves oxygen and increases your distance per breath hold.

Train smarter, move better, and your dynamic apnea will follow.
