“I don’t know what’s wrong with my BCD?”

That’s usually the first thought when divers notice their buoyancy control device inflating on its own.A self‑inflating BCD isn’t haunted — it’s physics and mechanics at play:

Auto‑inflation cause: Most often, a sticky inflator button or sand/salt buildup keeps the valve slightly open, allowing air to leak in.Depth pressure effect: As you descend, trapped air expands differently than expected, making it feel like the BCD is “working on its own.”
Maintenance solution: Regular rinsing, servicing, and checking the inflator assembly prevents these surprises.

👉 The takeaway: If your BCD seems to have a mind of its own, don’t panic. It’s a reminder that gear care is as important as dive skills. A quick service or cleaning usually solves the mystery.Dive Smart Tip: Always test your inflator before a dive.
