HOLE 6 — River’s Edge Roulette 🌿🌊

Things get slightly easier here…

Well, at least finding the tee pad does.

After the scavenger hunt of the previous holes, Kelvin & Maree are relieved to find Hole 6 sitting beside one of Hamilton Park’s popular walking paths. The challenge from there, however, is far from over.

🌿 Long grass waiting to swallow discs
🌳 Trees and branches guarding every route
🚶 Shared area with park users
🚫 Path and beyond left = OB
🌊 Don’t let your disc drift toward the river

The mission is simple:

Find a clean line through the obstacles, push deep into the fairway, and set up a birdie opportunity.

The reality?

Every branch seems determined to knock your disc off course.

Hit the gap perfectly and you might be rewarded with one of the more satisfying birdies on the course.

Catch a tree kick and you’re suddenly searching through long grass wondering where things went wrong.

Honestly, on this hole…

🥏 Birdie feels lucky.
✅ Par feels good.
😅 Finding your disc feels even better.

The biggest mistake here is leaking left. The walking path and everything beyond it is out of bounds, helping keep players safely away from the river’s edge.

This is another hole where patience and smart golf often beat aggressive hero shots.

🧠 Stay in the fairway.
🌿 Stay out of the rough.
🥏 Keep your favourite disc in the bag.

HOLE 5 — Lost & Found 🌿🥏

By now, Kelvin & Maree have realised that finding the basket isn’t always the hardest part…

Sometimes, it’s finding the tee pad.

For Hole 5, we’re again using the layout established for Disc Golf South’s “Out At The Trout” tournament, as this section of Hamilton Park is still awaiting a more permanent course setup.

🌿 Overgrown fairway
📍 Hard-to-find tee location
🌳 Trees and rough waiting everywhere
🎯 Placement beats power

The challenge starts before the first throw.

Once you’ve located the tee area, it’s time to navigate another fairway packed with long grass, awkward lines, and enough obstacles to make every shot feel earned.

Throw it clean and you’ll have a genuine chance to attack the basket.

Catch a branch?
Welcome to the rough.

Push too aggressively?
You might be adding “disc search party” to your scorecard.

The distance isn’t huge, but this hole proves yet again that Hamilton Park’s overgrown section is all about smart decision-making and controlled ex*****on.

🧠 Find the gap.
🥏 Advance the disc.
🌿 Hopefully find it again.

This stretch of holes has a completely different personality from the open fairways at the start of the round, turning every birdie into a small victory.

🌎🥏 CHASING DISC GOLF DREAMS! 🥏🌎

A few days ago, WFC Disc Golf’s own Kelvin Cummings was lucky enough to join a Disc Golf South social round at Elizabeth Park in Invercargill. Even better, he managed to land on a card with the entire Rance family! ❤️

It was fantastic to catch up with Connor, Hayley, and their family before they embark on an incredible journey to the USA to represent New Zealand at the prestigious PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championships. Opportunities like this don’t come around every day, and it’s inspiring to see the hard work, dedication, and family support that has helped make this dream a reality.

As a community, one of the things we love most about disc golf is getting behind our players and helping them achieve goals that once seemed impossible. 🇳🇿🥏

Kelvin has already signed up for their upcoming fundraiser event and encourages anyone who can to get involved, whether that’s by playing, donating, sharing the event, or simply wishing the Rance family all the best for their adventure.

📅 DGS + DGTA Winter 1+1 Dayer

✔️ C-Tier sanctioned singles on Saturday
✔️ Saturday proceeds going directly to support the Rance family’s Junior Worlds campaign

HOLE 4 — Hope, Hyzers & Haystacks 🌿🌳

If Hole 3 introduced the rough stuff… Hole 4 doubles down.

Using the layout created for Disc Golf South’s “Out At The Trout” tournament, Kelvin & Maree step onto a barely noticeable tee area and prepare for one of the more unpredictable holes on the course.

🌿 Long grass everywhere
🌳 Branches reaching into every flight path
🎯 Placement is more important than power
🤞 A little luck doesn’t hurt either

The mission sounds simple:

Throw from the tee.
Miss the trees.
Find your disc.

Easy, right? 😅

In reality, every metre of fairway feels contested.

Clip an early branch and you’re dropping straight into the rough.
Push too wide and you’re searching through knee-high grass.
Thread the gap cleanly and suddenly you’re rewarded with either a straightforward approach or even a chance to run the basket.

This is one of those holes where the scorecard rarely tells the full story.

Sometimes the best shot is simply the one you can find afterwards.

🧠 Smart golf wins here.
🌳 Greedy golf usually doesn’t.

The overgrown nature of these holes creates a very different challenge from the open fairways earlier in the round, demanding patience, accuracy, and a willingness to embrace a little chaos.

HOLE 3 — Out In The Wild 🌿🥏

The open fairways are behind us.

Welcome to the first of Hamilton Park’s rougher, more adventurous holes — where finding the basket is only half the battle.

🌿 Overgrown fairway
🌳 Trees with grabby branches everywhere
🥏 Long grass ready to swallow discs
🚶 Shared space with walkers and cyclists

This hole currently doesn’t have a permanent tee pad, so Kelvin & Maree opted to play the layout established by Disc Golf South for their Out At The Trout event in late 2025.

And what a challenge it is.

The basket isn’t far away, but the fairway feels much tighter than the distance suggests.

Push too aggressively and you’re clipping branches.
Come up short and you’re hunting through the rough.
Miss your landing zone and your disc might disappear into the long grass altogether.

This is one of those holes where smart golf beats big golf.

🎯 Placement over power.
🌳 Gap hitting over distance.
🧠 Patience over hero shots.

And as always, remember that Hamilton Park is a shared public space.

🚴 Watch for cyclists.
🚶 Give way to walkers.
🥏 Throw only when the fairway is clear.

Birdies are available here… if you can keep your disc out of the jungle.

HOLE 2 — Pick Your Poison 🌳🥏

Welcome to one of the toughest fairway holes at Hamilton Park.

At first glance, the basket doesn’t seem too far away… until the trees remind you who’s really in charge.

🌳 Multiple guardian trees blocking the direct route
🥏 Sidearm line required for Kelvin
🚫 Path and beyond left = OB
🎯 Long approach and accurate putting essential

Kelvin’s play was clear from the tee — launch a controlled sidearm around the left side of the tree cluster, gain maximum distance, and set up a long approach into the green.

Simple in theory.

The reality?

One small mistake and the trees are more than happy to swat your disc out of the sky.

Meanwhile, Maree discovered an alternative tee pad and decided to test a slightly shorter, less obstructed route.

Did it make things easier?

Not really 😅

Even with the cleaner initial gap, she still faced a lengthy approach and needed quality putting to walk away with the score she wanted.

This hole doesn’t reward half-committed shots.

Clip a branch and you’re scrambling.
Leak left and OB comes into play.
Execute two quality throws and suddenly birdie is on the table.

Distance helps. Accuracy matters. Tree kicks decide everything.

Arguably the most demanding of Hamilton Park’s open fairway holes, Hole 2 asks players to balance aggression with patience from start to finish.

🥏 Travelling through Southland? Hamilton Park is packed with fun shot shapes, strategic fairways, and enough variety to keep every round interesting.

🌾 WFC Disc Golf 🇳🇿 Hamilton Hazard Hunt

HOLE 1 — Open Fairway, Tight Margins 🎯🌳

Welcome to Gore’s Hamilton Park Disc Golf Course — where the fairways may look open, but the hazards are ready and waiting.

Kelvin & Maree kick off their latest WFC Disc Golf adventure with a moderately long Par 3 that demands both distance and accuracy from the very first throw.

🚀 Full commitment off the tee
🌳 Early trees shaping the fairway
🛣️ Path left = OB danger
🚫 Long and left = trouble
🎯 Long-range approach precision required

The challenge starts immediately.

Clip an early tree and you’re giving away distance.
Drift too far left and the out-of-bounds path comes into play.
Push too long and you’re bringing even more danger into the equation.

The reward?

Pure the line and you’ll have a genuine birdie opportunity on one of the longer opening holes you’ll find on a South Island course.

This is a hole that asks a simple question:

Can you combine power and placement from the very first throw?

Kelvin & Maree are hoping for a strong start to the round… but Hamilton Park isn’t known for giving away easy scores.

🥏 If you’re travelling through Southland, make sure Hamilton Park is on your must-play list. With 18 holes, a great variety of shot shapes, and plenty of scoring opportunities, it’s a fantastic destination course. Take care however, as there are missing elements (teepads and clear fairways) to this course.
