🎥 In-Shed Training for Pre-Lamb Season

Although this video clip is a couple of years old, the message is just as relevant today.

In this clip, Peter Lyon (P Lyon Shearing, Alexandra,) shares some valuable insights gained from years of experience in the industry.
As the shearing and wool handling industries continue to evolve, the demand for quality, efficiency, and professionalism has never been greater.
For shearers, mastering the right techniques can eliminate many of the frustrations that come with shearing day after day, while improving both productivity and job satisfaction.

For wool handlers, understanding wool, wool contracts, timing, and shed efficiency is essential when meeting the specifications required by farmers and wool buyers.
Peter knows what it takes to build a successful team and a productive shed environment.
With pre-lamb preparations underway, now is the perfect time to invest in your staff and sharpen their skills.
Elite NZ can help get your team up to speed with practical, industry-focused training.

We talk a lot about technique, training and competition. But there’s one thing that doesn’t get nearly enough airtime. Looking after your body.

Pre-lamb season is physically demanding in a way most people outside the industry simply don’t understand. And the people who last the distance aren’t always the most talented — they’re the ones who take care of themselves.

Elite trainer Dion shares exactly what that looks like heading into the season. Worth a watch before you start.

The woolhandler is one of the most underestimated people in the shed.

We asked Elite trainer Dion to break down exactly why skilled woolhandling matters and what it actually costs when it’s done poorly.

The short answer? Good woolhandling can increase the total value of a clip by thousands of dollars.

If you’re keen to upskill or get your team trained up before the season, get in touch. We’d love to help.

Noel recently travelled down to Fairlie to deliver another Animal Welfare & Calm Sheep Handling Course for the team at Mackenzie Shearing, led by Johnny Guthrie.

It’s great to see businesses within the industry continuing to prioritise learning and development. Investing time into education like this not only lifts standards on-farm but also supports a more professional, sustainable future for the wider industry.

Employers enrolling their staff in these courses can ensure everyone understands their responsibilities under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

A huge thank you to the organisations who made this possible through their funding support — the Ministry for Primary Industries, Zentera Wool Company, PGG Wrightson Wool, the NZ Shearing Contractors Association, and Wool Impact.

Another Animal Welfare & Calm Sheep Handling course successfully completed for the team at Moore Sheep Shearing LTD Ltd in Seddon, Marlborough.

Elite Operations Manager Noel Handley and Jo Brooker (who also somehow keeps our administration running smoothly!) delivered the course to a highly engaged group, generating plenty of questions and discussion around the requirements and practical application of the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

It's encouraging to see industry professionals investing their time in learning and staying up to date with best practice. Courses like these help ensure our industry remains professional, sustainable, and well-positioned for the future.
This could not have been done without the funding support from Ministry for Primary Industries, Zentera Wool Company, PGG Wrightson Wool, NZ Shearing Contractors Association and Wool Impact.

Last week, Tom and Gavin headed to Mt Linton Station near Ohai to deliver our Animal Welfare & Calm Sheep Handling course as part of the Zentera Wool Company, Wool Education Workshop.

The energy in the room was something else. A genuinely engaged audience who clearly care about the future of this industry and want to get it right, from animal welfare through to wool quality and everything in between.

A huge thanks to the Zentera team for organising another brilliant Wool Education Workshop, and to everyone at Mt Linton Station for hosting such a large group in those conditions.
This could not have been done without funding support from MPI, Zentera, PGGW, NZSCA and Wool Impact.

45 people. Three shearing contractors. One woolshed. One very important conversation. 🐑

Last week, our team delivered our Animal Welfare & Calm Sheep Handling course at Ben Dhu Station, and the response was everything we could have hoped for.

It was brilliant to see such strong support from Waimate Shearing, Phil Cleland Shearing and McSkimming Shearing, having three contractor teams in the same room, learning together and having real conversations about welfare standards and calm handling practices, that’s exactly what this course is designed to do.

Everyone walked away with a better understanding of the Animal Welfare Act and the role they each play in making sure every animal is handled with care.

A huge thank you to farmer Hamish Smith for providing the venue at Ben Dhu Station, and to every single person who showed up, engaged, and contributed to such a great day of learning.

And remember, this training is fully funded with support from MPI, Zentera, PGGW, NZSCA and Wool Impact . If you’d like to bring it to your team or region, get in touch.
