Just because I teach Pilates, doesn’t mean I don’t need to strength train! 💪🏼
If anything, as I move through my 40s, I know I need to be incorporating strength training more into my life.
With perimenopause on the doorstep and menopause eventually to come, looking after our bones becomes even more important. As oestrogen levels decline, women can experience a faster loss of bone density, which is why building and maintaining strong bones throughout our 40s and beyond is so important.
I recently listened to a really interesting podcast about osteoporosis, and it mentioned that pilates itself isn't necessarily enough to protect our bones from osteoporosis.
Pilates has so many benefits — improving core strength, posture, balance, mobility and body awareness — but combining Pilates with progressive strength and weight-bearing exercise can provide greater benefits for bone and muscle health.
Our bones actually respond to the loads placed on them. When we challenge our muscles and bones through resistance and weight-bearing exercise, we give our bodies a reason to maintain and strengthen them. 🦴💪🏼
So this is something I'm making a priority for myself now — 2–3 strength sessions each week, alongside my Pilates.
Because teaching Pilates doesn't mean I can skip the strength work! 😜
If anything, it makes me even more aware of how important it is to keep my whole body strong and healthy as I get older.
Pilates + strength training = a pretty great combination. ❤️
