Leadership comes in all shapes and sizes, and 9-year-old Rocco is a prime example of this. Rocco pushed himself far beyond what could be considered comfortable to both set and achieve a HUGE goal of conquering 5000 stair steps around Aotearoa. With altruism beyond his years, Rocco wanted to be able to help the Hawke's Bay team get to the 2027 Halberg Games in Auckland by raising money through this massive feat.

Rocco completed his 5000 stair step challenge with the BIGGEST grin on his face on Saturday 12 September 2026. He was surrounded by his supporters, including his family and his dedicated physio, Karen.

If you too would like to help the team make their way to Tāmaki Makaurau so our athletes can shine, please donate at the link below or continue to share the link. Donations will be gratefully received until the page closes this Friday, 18 September.

What a fun-filled day yesterday was! Our athletes had a great time working on their skills with our friends at Sense Rugby NZ and then, to top it all off, they met a whole lot of their heroes at the Hawkes Bay Magpies Captain's Run.

Rocco's Journey: A Wish to Walk also reached the conclusion of this chapter: watch this space for photos and videos!

Not only was the sun beaming down yesterday, but so too were the smiles, and we're sure those will just become even wider as today's game continues.

Week after week, these legendary athletes continue to grow and impress!

Coach Nick added in the bench press and kettlebell deadlifts for a new challenge, which these guys tackled with vigour.

We are so proud of the gains they are making and the confidence we see increasing with every session!

Rocco, we are so, so, SO proud of you and cannot wait to celebrate with you tomorrow!

After such a great day out in the sunshine this past Saturday, let's keep this Vitamin D fest going with one more big adventure out in the beautiful fresh air!

Come along to an energising and exhilarating Sense Rugby session followed by an inspiring and exciting experience at the Magpies Captain's Run. Rocco will also be completing his final push on his staircase challenge, and he would love to have you there to support him.

Sense Rugby will finish at 10:15am, giving us plenty of time to get to the Captain's Run.

Please wear your DSRHB t-shirt.

Are you keen to try a new sport or get stuck into one you already love?

If that sounds like you, head on down to the Mitre 10 Sports Park on Wednesday 23 September for this fantastic opportunity.

Along with these excellent sporting activities, there will also be a sausage sizzle, music, and a performance by a local group. If that wasn't enough, there will also be vouchers for anyone interested in swimming to come down to a club training and jump in the pool (free of charge!).

There will be plenty of coaches and volunteers from the Special Olympics organisation there to answer all your questions.

So, head on over to Mitre 10 Sports Park, have a go and learn more about what Special Olympics sports are all about!
