* Awapuni Speedway Ministock 1200cc *

Aprox. 80 Ministocks, first out of town meeting, two nights of racing, banked track meant one very nervous Sophie.

With lots of well meaning advice coming Soph's way - be careful of the pole line, its slippery; don't go too high, you'll hit the wall; don't go too low as you'll get stuck on the pole line it all contributed to the nerves. However she shook them off (mostly) and got stuck in.

Her first two races on Friday night weren't her best but certainly not her worst. By the third race she had the hang of the track, had settled into herself and she was away. She had a great last race of the night and we could all see her confidence had grown and she was ready for night two.

Saturday started off with a cooked breakfast at the track and a clean up of the car. We had camped in the car park so was just a quick stroll between "home" and the pits.

Saturday nights racing went really well. We missed the set up slightly for the first race which gave Sophie a car that was a bit tricky for her, but we could already tell tonight was going to be a better night. Race two and three Soph drove really well. Making a few passes, trying different lines and just driving nice and smooth in general.

We think Sophie finished about 5th or 6th overall in the consolation group (third tier).

We were so proud of her this weekend. This was a big meeting for Sophie, as her first out of town meeting & the biggest meeting she has raced at.

I was also really proud of how Georgia & Izzy managed the weekend. As much as they enjoy speedway too, its not always easy spending hours just waiting around for something to happen. Luckily there were mud puddles and even a frog to pass the time time.

A big thank you to Mum & Dad (Granny & Grandad). Granny makes sure we have plenty to eat and drink and helps to calm the frayed nerves and tempers. Meanwhile Grandad keeps the car going and gives plenty of advice.

It was awesome to have Mahanga from Air Ruatoria along on Friday where we even taught him a thing or two about speedway and he jumped in to help change a wheel.

Thanks to Awapuni Speedway for an awesome meeting.

Last but certainly not least a HUGE thank you to all of our sponsors who make this all possible.

So Saturday night.... Meeanee Speedway final meeting.

Sophie and I both had ok nights.
My first race I had an initial awesome start but after a first lap incident we went back to a full restart and I missed the start, then had to move slightly wide to avoid a near accident and so lost lots of places and ground. I drove well though but just couldn't catch anyone.

Second and third race we missed the set up slightly and the car was a bit of a handful. Not really the way I wanted to end the season, but in saying that I've had a great season with so many improvements so can't really complain.

Sophie also didn't get the best start in her first race and got caught in a bit of a first corner muddle. She drove well afterwards and caught up and made a couple of passes.

Second race her start was better but still not as good as previous meetings and she did what I did in the first race and lost some ground. She drove nice and steady. The track was getting a bit rough and she bounced out of a rut and a driver behind her had lost his breaks as he tried to avoid her, he hit Sophie (not at all his fault - just one of those racing incidents) and Soph ended up in the wall, bending her front bumper. The driver did come over to find Soph and apologize. I really do love the awesome sportsmanship you see amongst these kids.

While Sophie was sitting up against the wall was when the real excitement happened. Sophie extremely luckily saw a clump of clay (possibly a rock) coming into her roll cage. Thankfully she moved her hands just before it hit her steering wheel and buckled her steering wheel. Watch the video clip closely and you see it! That unfortunately was the end of her night.

We will do a special shout out to our sponsors in a week or two but in the meantime here is a list of our amazing sponsors

Last night was dedicated to Dad/Grandad.

It was his birthday and with it being the last meeting of the season it seemed fitting we did it for the old boy!

Dad is the one who keeps us both on the track. The majority of the maintenance and repairs are done by him or organized by him. He is one of our biggest and most dedicated supporters.

Without Dad/Grandad we really would struggle to be out there racing. He teaches both Sophie and I alot about our cars and is always encouraging and supporting us to learn more and to be able to work on our cars as independently as possible.

Its even the little things like teaching me how to back a trailer and holding the expectation that I can do hard things - mine and Sophie's gender does not define what we can and can't do, and this has come from Dad/Grandad.

I didn't make this post last night as Dad hates being the centre of attention but we really wanted to take his birthday as our opportunity to thank and honour him for all he does for us.....even if he is a grumpy old bu**er sometimes.

Happy birthday Dad/Grandad. We hope the heating camp chair and Ryobi radio keep you warm and informed for future meetings.

We love you.

Tomorrow we head out to Meeanee Speedway for the last one of the season for me & Sophie's second to last meeting. This is Meeanee's last meeting for this season, but Sophie is entered in Awapuni Speedway's Ministock 1200cc meeting in May.

Its been an awesome season and we've already got eyes ahead for the next one.

Lets make tomorrow a goodie!

Sadly Awapuni Speedway have made the hard call to postpone this weekends meeting.
Its never an easy call to make, but I must say, good on them for making the call early, especially for those traveling.

We will be there for this meeting on the 8th & 9th May.

Next meeting for both Sophie and I will be at Meeanee Speedway on the 18th April (Happy Birthday Dad/Grandad). This will be my last meeting of the season & now Sophie's second to last meeting.

Saturday's meeting was another great meeting for me.

We tried a couple of different things to try and get some more drive coming out the corners, which I definitely think helped.
We seem to have the gearing pretty much bang on now we think, although on Saturday I did hit the rev limiter earlier down the straights then previously, so tossing up what to do.

Corner exit and straight speed is pretty much full capacity now. Corner entry - still need to work on this (get braver 🤦🏼‍♀️).

The feature was 25 laps which felt like forever but I was actually really pleased with how I did considering a few factors.

With one more meeting to go I feel like I can say that this season has held some really big improvements for me and lots of learning.

This weekend we are hopeful off to Awapuni Speedway for the Minsistock 1200cc Champs which is a two day meeting and Sophie's first out of town meeting.

Thanks to my incredible sponsors

And as always to my Mum and Dad. I truly would be racing without them

Thanks also to my 3 daughters who inspire me to keep trying and pushing and showing up every week for them. They remind me constantly that trying my best is good enough.
