NSVets14th Grade Gore Wanderers AFC Team 2026 season wrap up
At the start of the season, this team was a bit like a football version of a blind date.
We brought together players from three different teams, many of whom had never played together before, and honestly, nobody really knew what to expect.
From day one, our focus wasn't on trophies or results. The goal was simple: get a little bit better every game.
The season started with a couple of tough lessons disguised as heavy losses. There were moments when the scoreboard wasn't exactly our friend, but what stood out was how the players responded. They kept turning up to training, worked hard, listened, learned, and never stopped believing in themselves or each other.
Slowly but surely, things started to click. Passes connected. Players found their positions. Confidence grew. Most importantly, the team started playing the way they trained.
Then came the first win.
What happened after that was something pretty special.
The team grew stronger every week and went on an unbeaten run for the remainder of the season. Before we knew it, the same group that had taken a few early-season knocks had secured the competition trophy with a game still to play.
While winning the trophy was a fantastic achievement, it wasn't the best part of the season. The best part was watching a group of kids from different teams become genuine teammates and friends.
The improvement, commitment, resilience, and enjoyment they showed week after week is what made this season memorable.
A huge thank you must go to all the parents and whΔnau. Football doesn't happen without you.
Thank you for the countless trips to training, early mornings, cold sideline support, washing muddy uniforms, and providing encouragement every week.
Whether you were cheering every touch, offering tactical advice that nobody asked for, or just keeping the half time lollies flowing, your support made a huge difference.
To the players, you should be incredibly proud of what you achieved. You proved that hard work, a positive attitude, and sticking together can take a team a long way.
From a group of strangers at that first training to champions by the end of the season.
Not a bad effort at all.
