“Pasuwa Retains Full 23-Man Squad for Ethiopia Friendlies”___ Yalero Newspaper!
Malawi National Football Team head coach Kalisto Pasuwa has opted to keep all 23 players he initially called into camp for the upcoming international friendly matches against Ethiopia.
The Flames departed for Addis Ababa on Thursday through Chileka International Airport in Blantyre ahead of the two matches scheduled for Friday and Tuesday, which form part of the team’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Operations Director Gomezgani Zakazaka confirmed that no player was dropped from the squad before departure.
“It is the coach’s responsibility to decide which players he wants for any assignment. In this case, he has chosen to travel with all the players he summoned for the two matches,” said Zakazaka.
He explained that squad sizes are often determined by the regulations governing a particular competition or agreements between participating associations.
“For tournaments, there are usually limits on the number of players. For example, during the Four Nations Tournament in Botswana, the maximum was 25 players. In friendly matches, the number normally ranges between 21 and 23 players depending on the arrangements between the teams involved,” he said.
The squad includes several returning faces, among them Francisco Madinga, Christopher Kumwembe, Chifundo Mphasi, Dennis Chembezi, Blessings Singini and Washali Jaziya, who have all been handed another opportunity to impress at international level.
Also in the travelling party is United States-based forward Luciano Rundles, who could earn his first senior cap for Malawi.
The Flames will, however, be without several foreign-based players, including Patrick Mwaungulu, Chikumbutso Salima, Chawanangwa Kaonga, Mayele Malango and Richard Mbulu.
The two encounters against Ethiopia are expected to provide valuable preparation for Malawi as they continue building towards the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
