Technical diving doesn’t have to start with a twinset on your back and a plan to disappear into the deep end.

For many divers, the smarter first step is learning better control, better planning, better equipment awareness, and how to build redundancy into the way you dive.

That’s where sidemount becomes a really interesting entry point.

Especially here in Malta.

A lot of our diving involves shore entries, steps, rocks, kit movement, and sometimes a bit of a walk before you even get to the water. Carrying heavy back-mounted doubles is not always the most enjoyable part of the day.

With sidemount, you can carry cylinders separately, kit up closer to the entry point, and build a configuration that feels balanced, streamlined, and highly adaptable underwater.

But sidemount is not just about comfort.

It also teaches you to think differently.

Gas access.
Cylinder management.
Trim.
Awareness.
Redundancy.
Problem solving.
Team procedures.

All the little details that matter more and more as your diving becomes more serious.

From there, courses like Advanced Nitrox and Helitrox start building the next layer: gas planning, staged decompression, deeper dive procedures, and a more structured approach to technical diving.

At Dive Systems Malta, we offer open-circuit technical training through both TDI and SSI XR, which means we can help divers choose the pathway that actually makes sense for their goals.

Whether you’re curious about sidemount, thinking about your first technical course, or looking at Malta’s deeper wrecks as the next step, the best place to start is with a proper conversation.

Not every diver needs the same route.

But every good route starts with the same things:

Control.
Planning.
Awareness.
And training that builds progressively.

Massive thanks to Sam Joshua Norton for the images, featuring Jack during his TDI sidemount, Advanced Nitrox and Helitrox training. And Nadine Bauer for the stunning images of the divers on DPV at the double and triple arch.

The next generation of divers getting ready to jump in 🤿🌊

Nina is already certified, and this time she had a few friends joining the adventure - Jenny, Marcus and Matti getting ready for their try dive.

There’s something really special about seeing young people excited around the water.

The questions.
The nerves.
The laughs while getting kitted up.
The first time breathing through a regulator.
The moment they realise this whole underwater world is actually open to them.

For some, a try dive is just a fun summer experience.

For others, it’s the start of something much bigger.

A new hobby.
A new confidence.
A new way to explore the sea.

And honestly, watching that little spark appear is one of the best parts of diving.

Big smiles, good energy, and hopefully the first of many underwater adventures.

Well done Jenny, Marcus and Matti - and great to see Nina already part of the dive family 💙

Dive boat luxury: the lift 😎

Boat diving is one of the best ways to experience Malta’s dive sites, you get access to beautiful locations, more space, less shore logistics, and that proper day-out-on-the-water feeling.

But let’s be honest…

Coming back onto the boat after a dive is not always the most elegant part of diving.

You’re wet.
You’re carrying gear.
The boat is moving.
Your fins suddenly feel massive.
And the ladder can become a tiny personal obstacle course.

That’s why the dive lift on SIMO is such a brilliant feature.

No awkward ladder shuffle.
No trying to climb out like a fully-kitted-up sea creature.
No need to take all your gear off in the water before getting back on board.

You simply move onto the lift, relax for a moment, and up you come, slowly, smoothly, and usually with a massive smile on your face.

It makes the whole boat diving experience feel easier, safer, and just a little bit more luxurious.

And yes… when someone slowly emerges from the water like this, a dramatic soundtrack is absolutely required.

Boat diving with Dive Systems Malta: good dives, good vibes, and occasionally, a very cinematic return to deck.

Summer days, Dive Systems style ☀️🌊

Boat diving around Comino, clear blue water, happy divers, and exactly the kind of surface interval that makes you forget what day it is.

This is what we love about diving in Malta — the whole day becomes part of the experience.

The boat ride.
The sunshine.
The laughs between dives.
The first look below the surface.
And that post-dive smile that says everything.

Big thanks for capturing the vibe so perfectly 🤿

Your first dive is hard to explain until you’ve done it.

One minute you’re standing there wondering how this is all going to feel…

The gear.
The breathing.
The water.
The nerves.
The excitement.

And then suddenly, you’re underwater.

Breathing calmly.
Floating.
Looking around at a world you’ve only ever seen from the surface.

That first try dive is not just about “trying scuba.” It’s that little moment where your brain goes:

“Oh wow… this is actually possible.”

A new world opens up, and for a few minutes, everything gets quieter.

No phone.
No noise.
No rush.

Just bubbles, blue water, and the very strange feeling that you might have just discovered something you’ll want to do again.

This is what we love about introducing people to diving.

The smile after the dive says it all 🤿

Thank you, - for sharing your first underwater experience with us!

Smashing it at Exiles 💪🌊

Big well done to Valentina and Anna, who were out with Nadine (Nadine Bauer )for their SSI Junior Open Water Dive 3, and absolutely nailed it.

Calm, focused, smiling, and clearly loving every minute of it.

There’s something very special about watching young divers build confidence underwater. One dive at a time, the skills start clicking, the nerves settle, and suddenly they’re not just “trying scuba” anymore…

They’re becoming divers.

Great work girls, one step closer to becoming certified Junior Open Water Divers 🤿

Most divers come to Malta because they want great dives.

Fair.

The wrecks are world-class, the visibility can be ridiculous, and if you’re already planning several days underwater, Malta is one of the best places in Europe to do it.

But this combo is for the diver who wants those dives to build towards something.

The Advanced Wreck Adventurer Combo at Dive Systems Malta takes 8 dives and turns them into a proper progression pathway:

Deep Diver
For better planning, control and awareness when diving deeper.

Advanced Wreck Diver
For divers who want to explore wrecks with more skill, discipline and respect for the environment.

DPV Diver
Because scooters are ridiculously fun, but they also require proper control, awareness and team procedures.

Nitrox Diver
One of the most useful certifications for repetitive dive trips, especially when you’re making the most of a few days underwater.

So yes, you still get the dives.

You still get Malta’s wrecks.
You still get the blue water.
You still get the adventure.

But you also leave with more confidence, better habits, and four SSI certifications that actually make sense together.

This is not about collecting plastic cards.

It’s about becoming a more capable diver in the kind of environment that rewards good skills: depth, wrecks, scooters, gas planning, awareness, and proper control.

8 dives.
4 certifications.
One serious upgrade.

Comment “DEEP” and we’ll send you the course details.

Spotted by - a broadnose pipefish hiding in plain sight 🌿

At first glance, it looks just like another strand of Posidonia… and that’s exactly the point. These tiny relatives of seahorses are masters of camouflage, blending perfectly into the seagrass so most divers would swim straight past without ever noticing them.

A little reminder that some of the best sightings underwater aren’t always the biggest - sometimes they’re the ones that make you stop, slow down, and really look.

Can you spot it before the reveal? 👀
