Four years ago, after having my first child, I was diagnosed with two herniated discs.
I went to see a sports doctor to find out how to fix it and how I could safely get back to training.
Her answer was pretty definitive:
“You’ll never lift again. You could try swimming and yoga.”
I cried. I got angry. And I got so frustrated. Then cried some more for two weeks.
Then, at some point, I thought:
WTF. That cannot be it.
CrossFit is infinitely adaptable. There had to be a way back somehow.
So I started again.
For about a year, my training was 80% rehab and 20% bodyweight work. I didn’t touch a barbell or weights. There were no impressive workouts. Just rehab, boring bloody rehab, patience, and slowly learning to trust my body again.
Then I had my second child… pushing everything back even further. Starting over a second time.
There were plenty of reasons to believe it just wasn’t going to happen.
But I didn’t give up on what I had set out to do.
And four years after being told I would never lift weights again, I front squatted 78kg.
Maybe that number doesn’t look like much to some people.
To me, it’s huge.
Because I’m not celebrating 78kg. I’m celebrating everything it represents: the rehab, the setbacks, two pregnancies, the time away, the fear, the patience… and refusing to accept that “never” was the end of my story.
I’m not saying to ignore medical advice. Everyone’s journey is different.
But sometimes today’s limitation isn’t tomorrow’s reality.
You might have to start with rehab. You might have to go back to basics. You might have to take years.
But keep going.
Don’t let someone else’s “never” become your limit. 🤫
