REMEMBERING A SRI LANKAN HOCKEY LEGEND — JUNAID JHAN

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Junaid Jhan, former Captain of the Sri Lankan National Hockey Team, who passed away today.

Born in Kandy, Madawala, and later residing in Colombo, Junaid Jhan dedicated a remarkable part of his life to Sri Lankan hockey, representing his country with distinction and leading with pride.

A CAREER OF DISTINCTION

In 1978, Junaid Jhan captained Sri Lanka on the national tour to India and Bangladesh, where Sri Lanka secured a historic Test series victory against Bangladesh.

He represented Sri Lanka at the 8th Asian Games in Bangkok, where he famously scored Sri Lanka’s opening goal against India, finding the net against Indian defender Surjit Singh, regarded among the finest full-backs of his era.

He captained the CHA XI in 1975, 1977 and 1979, and led the side to victory at the Under-23 Junior Nationals in Kalutara in 1975.

In 1975, he captained BRC to victory in the Andriez Shield, Pioneer Shield and Pettah Pharmacy 7-a-side Tournament. His contribution to the club was later honoured with his election as a Life Member in 1985.

Junaid Jhan was part of a remarkable sporting family. His brothers, Col. Abdul Zahir and J.M. Ayub, also represented Sri Lanka in hockey, creating a proud family chapter in the nation’s sporting history.

From Kandy, Madawala to the national hockey arena, his journey reflected dedication, leadership and an enduring love for the game.

Today, Sri Lankan hockey has lost one of its distinguished servants. But the goals he scored, the teams he led, and the legacy he helped build will remain part of the history of Sri Lankan sport.

Your captaincy may have ended, but your legacy will continue to inspire generations.

Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates and the entire Sri Lankan hockey fraternity.
