THE COST OF DOING IT TWICE.

We keep asking for more money for trail maintenance. But are we making the best use of what we already have?

Good trail building requires more than dirt and tools. It takes knowledge, proper methods and time.

World-class trails deserve world-class maintenance standards.

Maybe it’s time to focus less on how much we spend and more on how long the results last.

What if Les Gets doesn’t have a crowd-size problem?

What if the real story is how a celebration became a ritual?

In 2004, around 45,000 spectators attended the DH/4X Saturday at the World Championships.

Les Gets was already HUGE.

But the modern finish rush appears later:

2021 → running onto the finish
2022 → mass invasion
2023 → EXPECTED
2024 → CUSTOMARY
2025 → TYPICAL
2026 → ANTICIPATED

CELEBRATION → REPETITION → EXPECTATION → CUSTOM → TRADITION → ANTICIPATION

That last step matters.

Because once thousands of people arrive expecting to participate, the behaviour is no longer entirely spontaneous.

So maybe the answer isn’t more fences.

Maybe it’s better design.

LIVE COURSE → CONTROLLED RELEASE → CELEBRATION

Protect the riders.
Protect the spectators.
Protect the culture.

The question for MTB:

If we know the crowd is coming onto the track, why aren’t we designing the moment when they do?

Look at this photograph for a moment.

Not as a mountain-bike fan.
Not as someone caught up in the atmosphere of Les Gets.

Look at it as a crowd-safety problem.

Thousands of people. Alcohol. Noise. Emotion. Athletes moving through extremely dense crowds. Barriers under pressure. Officials, photographers, media and spectators occupying the same compressed space.

And then ask a simple question:

At what point does “passion” become a foreseeable risk?

Because once behaviour becomes predictable, responsibility changes.

This isn’t about sanitising downhill. Quite the opposite. The wildness, noise and proximity are part of what makes our sport extraordinary.

But preserving that culture cannot mean refusing to question it.

What happens if next time somebody falls?
What happens if a barrier fails?
What happens if an athlete, marshal or spectator is seriously injured?

And perhaps the most uncomfortable question:

If we can already see the risk, why would we wait for an accident before changing anything?

Les Gets should start a conversation — not about whether mountain-bike fans are passionate enough, but about how the UCI, organisers, venues and the sport itself manage increasingly large and intense crowds.

Keep the wildness.

Manage the risk.

Because “this is mountain biking” is not a crowd-safety strategy.

Le parole costruiscono cultura.

E la cultura, prima o poi, diventa comportamento.

Sono ciclista da praticamente tutta la vita e conosco bene entrambe le parti della storia: sì, anche noi ciclisti possiamo sbagliare. Possiamo occupare troppo la carreggiata, ignorare le regole, essere poco rispettosi degli altri utenti della strada.

Ma nessun comportamento sbagliato giustifica l’odio verso un’intera categoria di persone.

“Ciclisti di merda.”
“Maledetti ciclisti.”
“Statevene a casa.”

Sembrano battute. Poi diventano clacson, insulti, sorpassi a pochi centimetri, intimidazioni.

E quando sei su una bicicletta, la differenza tra una battuta e le sue conseguenze può essere enorme.

La strada non appartiene agli automobilisti.
Non appartiene ai ciclisti.

È uno spazio condiviso.

Possiamo discutere di regole, comportamenti e responsabilità — anzi, dobbiamo farlo.

Ma partendo da una cosa molto semplice:

sopra quella bicicletta non c’è “un ciclista”.
C’è una persona che vuole tornare a casa.

25 anni di sconfitte contro l’Inghilterra.

E poi arriva una sera così.

Nel Six Nations Championship.

Non è solo una vittoria.
È una barriera che cade.
È una generazione che smette di sentirsi “l’ultima della classe”.

Cuore.
Coraggio.
Orgoglio.

Quelle partite che tra dieci anni ricorderemo ancora.

Giornata Internazionale della Montagna – versione MTB / EMTB

Oggi celebriamo le montagne che rendono unico il nostro riding.
Nel Finalese, dalle creste a 1000 metri fino ai singletrack vista mare, la montagna è casa: terreno tecnico, roccia, boschi, flow, fatica e libertà.

Qui lo spirito della montagna vive ogni giorno grazie a guide, rider, trail builder e a tutte le realtà che lavorano per mantenere viva la cultura dell’outdoor e dei sentieri.

Che sia MTB o EMTB, la montagna ci insegna rispetto, curiosità e voglia di andare più lontano.
Ed è proprio qui, tra panorami che tolgono il fiato e discese che fanno ba***re il cuore, che questo spirito trova la sua forma più pura.
