We were honoured to welcome Mary and Jim Buckley, the children of the late J.J. Buckley, to Mallow Boxing Club.
J.J. Buckley was my old trainer, a true gentleman, a fantastic coach, and one of the greatest ambassadors for boxing that Mallow, Cork, Munster and Ireland have ever had. His passion for the sport inspired generations of young boxers.
His brothers, Dave and Paddy Buckley, were also outstanding boxers who proudly represented Mallow, Cork, Munster and Ireland. The Buckley name has a rich boxing tradition and has made an enormous contribution to the sport over many decades.
When we started the club, the Buckley family came together to support us. Mary told us there are around 32 first cousins in the family, and they all contributed towards a donation to help get the club up and running.
Mary also shared a lovely story, saying that she thought back to her own grandfather, nearly 100 years ago, when he was starting a boxing club in Mallow and would also have needed financial support. That generosity and community spirit are still alive in the Buckley family today.
On behalf of everyone at Mallow Boxing Club, we would like to sincerely thank the entire Buckley family for their kindness, generosity and encouragement. It means so much to have such a respected boxing family supporting our club.
We would also like to thank the people of Mallow. The support we have received over the past few months has been incredible. Donations, encouragement, kind words and goodwill have helped make this club possible.
Mallow is a wonderful town, but its greatest asset is its people. The community has really got behind us, and for that we are truly grateful.
From all of us at Mallow Boxing Club, thank you to everyone who has supported us. We will do our very best to make you proud and to continue the proud boxing tradition that families like the Buckleys helped to build.
