A SAIL / RUN MINI CRUISE! ⛵️🏃🏻‍♂️

Cpt Cearbhall Daly took some of our members on a mini cruise to Malahide last weekend. It was an overnight berthed at the marina , with food and drinks in the village on Saturday night, and then up early on Sunday morning to join the Malahide 5k Park Run! 🏃🏻‍♀️

Our gang had great fun!

Mini cruises like these are available to all Sailing in Dublin Club members — join us to try it yourself! Link in bio 🔗

SID Captain Niall Milton took some of our members out for some race practice over the weekend! 🏁

Meant as an intro session for beginners or almost beginners, to build confidence and pass on some racing know-how. Niall brought the gang through the basics of racing so they have some good starting knowledge out on the water.

The session was really enjoyed by all! Thanks Niall!

Is summer here? ☀️🤞🏼

Captain Gerry Flaherty took some of our gang out on the water to take advantage of the amazing weather conditions yesterday and top up the vitamin D!

What a day! The spinnaker even got a blow out!

We have lovely high pressure system conditions forecast until the middle of the week, the SID boats will be taking full advantage! 😎

Our next round of SID Vice Captains completed their assessments yesterday evening — well done to all! 👏🏼

All our Captains and Vice Captains are the backbone of Sailing in Dublin Club. They keep our standards high, our boats on the water, and make everything we offer possible. A huge thank you to each of them for the time, skill, and the dedication they give.

They are experienced sailors, many with decades on the water both here and abroad, who generously share their knowledge with fellow members. For many, their journey started right here in SID or in other local clubs — and continues to grow.

Ready to be part of it?

Storm Dave halted any sailing this weekend, so our gang made the most of the shore time and gave the engine on our 31.7 a service and took care of some other maintenance issues on our other SID club keelboats.

Thanks to SID Maintenance Officer, Pierce O’Broin and his team of club assistants — Christi, Niamh & Aidan for undertaking the work! 🛠️

Cup of tea and plenty of biscuits were in order on board after all that! 🫖🍪 Special mention to Christi for painting our SID cups so everyone has their favourite, they look great!

FONDLY REMEMBERING ALEX LAWES 💙
1988-2026

(Pictured, Alex at the helm on a SID cruise last summer)

Sailing in Dublin Club has lost a cherished member, Alex Lawes, who passed away on 22 March 2026. Alex was a current member. I only knew Alex in passing, however he and I had a lot in common. We both had an interest and probably a love of sailing, and more importantly we both shared a passion for brewing our own beers. Alex was the co-founder of the Dublin brewery Whiplash and Dublin bar Fidelity . Needless to say he started his brewing career by experimentation as most brewers generally do. They teach you that brewing is a science, however as every brewer will tell you, very often you practice your craft as an art, as the science bit doesn’t always work out the way you think is should.

I would like to think that Alex is in a better place, where the music is merry, the beer flows freely (probably his own), and he is looking out at a sunset with the soft sound of sails fluttering in the background.

“The Brewer’s Final Shift” — a poem about a life well-poured:

The mash is set, the kettle’s cold,
The final story has been told.
No more to craft the amber grain,
Through summer heat or winter rain.
He knew the magic, hops and yeast,
To make a brew, a humble feast.
He filled our glasses, filled our days,
With honest work and gentle ways.
So raise a pint of best bitter,
And let the silent tears be bitter-sweet.
The keg is tapped, the cellar closed,
The Brewer rests in soft repose.
The brew is done, the master sleeps,
While memory of his craft we keep.

Ar Dheis De go raibh a n-anamacha,

Dermot Avery
SID Commodore / Chairperson
