🎣 REBEL COUNTY SAC – JUNE SPECIES HUNT REPORT 🎣

Well lads, June certainly wasn’t short of a bit of action!

11 members got involved this month and managed to produce 36 fish across 20 different species.

And while May was all about the Shad madness, June had a bit of everything — club records, a few proper lumps, some unusual little fellas and one or two things that needed a bit of explaining afterwards! 😂

🐟 JUNE TOP SPECIES HUNTERS!

It was Vlad Nosov who came out on top for June with a serious month's species hunting.

🥇 Vlad Nosov – 8 species, 17.6 points

🥈 Noel Lane – 6 species, 12.7 points

🥈 Luca Frazer – 6 species, 12.7 points

Vlad had a daycent month altogether, finding 8 different species and putting 17.6 points on the board.

Noel and Luca couldn't be separated, both finishing on 6 species and 12.7 points.

🏆 ANGLER OF THE MONTH – NOEL LANE

A big congratulations to Noel Lane, our June Angler of the Month.

Noel was after the small stuff this month and managed to put TWO new club records on the books:

🟢 3-Spined Stickleback – 5cm

🟢 Common Blenny – 15cm

Now, they might not exactly be the biggest fish in the sea, but that's the beauty of the Species Hunt.

One minute you're looking for a baiter of a fish and the next you're squinting at something that's barely big enough to get onto the measure! 😂

Fair play Noel — two more records added to the collection. 🎣👏

🏆 OVERALL LEADERBOARD

The overall leaderboard is starting to get very interesting now, with some serious competition developing at the top.

1st.
George O’Hara – 23 species, 42.1 points

2nd.
Noel Lane – 22 species, 40.5 points

3rd.
Vlad Nosov – 18 species, 40.3 points

4th.
Shane Olden – 19 species, 39.6 points

5th.
Gab Matejko – 20 species, 34.5 points

George is still sitting on top with 42.1 points, but Noel has closed the gap and is now only 1.6 points behind.

And it's getting very tight behind them, with Vlad only 0.2 points behind Noel and Shane a further 0.7 points back.

With 20 species between them, Gab is also well in the mix.

There’s very little between the lads now, so another good month from any of them could see the whole thing turned on its head. 🎣

🐟 MORE CLUB RECORDS ON THE BOARD

June was another busy month for the club record list.

Shane Olden managed to get himself a new record with a:

🎣 LUCA FRAZER – SERIOUS BUSINESS

Young Luca Frazer had some month altogether.

First up was a proper lump of a Smoothhound, measuring:

🎣 115cm

That's some fish altogether, especially from our juvenile angler.

In fact, the Smoothound was 115cm on the measure matt becomes even more impressive when you find out that Luca is only 98cm on the matt😂

But Luca wasn't finished there.

He also produced a:

🟢 Scorpion Fish – 16cm

🏆 CLUB RECORD

And the young fella is still sitting proudly on top of the Thornback Ray Challenge with his daycent:

🚨 BENJI'S MAY CORRECTION CORNER

Now...

Before we finish up, there are a couple of little issues from the May report that need sorting out,

And by “little issues”, we mean Benji fu**ed up. 😂

First of all, apologies to Vlad Nosov.

In the May report we said his Tope had never been measured.

Turns out...

IT FU***NG HAD. 🤦‍♂️😂

Vlad's Tope measured a massive:

So Vlad not only caught a serious Tope, he actually broke the club record...

And then Benji went and told everyone he hadn't measured it. 🤣

Noel Lane's 140cm Conger was also left off the May report.

Well lads, May certainly wasn’t short on a bit of drama! 12 anglers put their heads down and managed to produce 53 fish across a daycent 27 different species.

And if April had a few surprises, May decided to go completely off the rails... 😂

🐟 THE BATTLE OF THE SHADS!

There was one fish that absolutely stole the show during May — the mighty Twaite Shad.

The club record didn’t just get broken once...

IT GOT BROKEN FOUR TIMES! 😂

At this stage the poor old club record is black and blue and probably needs a bit of councilling. Every time someone caught a Shad, the measure was coming out and another record was getting wiped off the board! 😂

Fair play to Shane Olden, who eventually put the brakes on the madness with a cracking 48cm fish to take the record.

And fair play to Pat Maher for breaking it twice himself! He obviously wasn’t happy with 44cm and went back for another go. 😂

Noel had some serious form throughout the month and managed to put THREE new club records on the books:

🟢 Golden Sinny Wrasse – 12cm
🟢 Corkwing Wrasse – 16cm

Some lovely species hunting there from Noel, proving once again that you don’t need to be hauling monsters onto the beach to rack up the points.

Sometimes it’s the tiny little fellas that cause the biggest amount of grief! 😂

Gab and Callum are almost impossible to split, with both on 19 species and just 0.1 points between them. Shane and Noel are also well in the mix, making for a daycent leaderboard heading into the next month. 🎣

🏆 THORNBACK RAY CHALLENGE

The Thornback Ray Challenge also had a serious shake-up in May.

And it’s young Luca Hurley who’s now sitting proudly on top of the pile after producing a fantastic:

There were plenty of other quality fish amongst the May returns.

Kieran Ryan produced a cracking 15cm Sand Smelt, taking another club record in the process.

Ben Hammill had a 47cm Gilthead Bream, a daycent fish and one that would put a smile on anyone’s face, no doubt he'll be reminding us for the next 12months🤣

And then there was Vlad and his Tope...

🎣 Rebel County SAC Species Hunt — April Report

Well lads and lady's April is in the bag and the Rebel County Species Hunt is officially running full steam.

We had 27 fish submitted by 12 anglers, with a decent spread of species on the board already. Not a bad start at all — although there’s always a few lads who seem to think the Species Hunt finishes in April are going hell for leather.💪

🏆 Angler of the Month — April

Vlad Nosov

Vlad takes the first Angler of the Month award with a cracking 13cm Rock Goby, which also happens to be a new club record.

Fair play to him. It mightn't be the biggest fish we've ever seen on a Rebel County report, but a club record is a club record and like my misses always tells me, size doesn't matter😀👍

🎯 Top 3 Point Scorers for April

🥇 Vlad Nosov — 7.6 points — 4 fish

A strong opening month from Vlad, getting himself straight into the mix and taking the Angler of the Month award.

Well done to our Beast from the East💪

🥈 George O Hara — 7.6 points — 5 fish

George matches Vlad's points total with an extra fish for good measure. And he also managed to produce the fish of the month...

🥉 Luca Frazer — 6.5 points — 4 fish

A brilliant start from juvenile angler Luca, finishing third in the monthly points despite going up against the big lads.

Fair play Luca — there's a few seasoned heads that'll want to keep an eye on this young fella. He could be some bit of trouble later in the year. 👀

🐟 Notable Fish

George O Hara — 109cm Smoothound

The standout fish of the month goes to George with a 109cm Smoothound — specimen size.

A proper lump of a fish altogether.

While some were scratching around like Langers for anything with fins, George rocks up with a 109cm Smoothound. Jaysus, leave a few for the rest of us will ya? That's daycent altogether, but no need to be making the rest of us look bad. 😂

A nice spread to get us going, with plenty of room for the more awkward species to start showing up as the year progresses.

And that's where the Species Hunt gets interesting — the lads who normally couldn't care less about a 2 inch fish suddenly become absolute detectives when there's points involved.

"Is that a blenny?"

"Could be a rockling."

"Hold on, don't touch it, I'll ask chat GPT" 😂

🏆 Top 5 Leaderboard

🥇 George O Hara — 19 species — 32 points

George has absolutely motored into the lead, with 19 species already on the board and 32 points. The Smoothound certainly hasn't hurt the cause either.

🥈 Gab Matejko — 15 species — 24.1 points

Gab sits nicely in second, only four species behind George. Plenty of time yet to reel him back in.

🥉 Noel Lane — 14 species — 23 points

Noel is just a point behind Gab, so there's already a nice little scrap developing for second place.

4️⃣ Shane Olden — 11 species — 20.2 points

Shane is sitting just over the 20-point mark and only three species off Noel. A few decent sessions and he'll be right up there.

5️⃣ Callum Looney — 11 species — 18 points

Same number of species as Shane, with just 2.2 points between them. No pressure, Callum. 😂

👀 The Hunt Is On

It's only April, so there's absolutely no point in anyone getting notions about winning this thing yet.

George has made the early running, Gab and Noel are breathing down his neck, Shane and Callum aren't far away, and young Luca has already shown that the juveniles are here to make their mark aswell💪

There's a long year ahead and plenty of strange-looking creatures waiting to ruin perfectly good sessions.

So get out there, lads.

Fish hard, find something different, take a decent photo and get it submitted.

Yesterday was a sad day for the rebels as we said a final farewell to club member and good friend JOHN MCSWEENY ( JOHNNY BASS ) . John made great friends and even better memories with his very much loved club the rebel county sea anglers and some of us knew John a lifetime especially myself as I fished with John for salmon on the river lee since I was a young lad just starting out and learned a lot from him . A character with a big heart is the only way to describe John in short and he will be dearly missed . I'd like to thank his fellow club members for the whip around for a wreath and a donation the club made to pieta house in his honour . Id also like to thank the MCSWEENY family for giving us the honour of shouldering our friend John to his final place of rest . We put together a little something in memory of John which I think he would of loved , hope those that knew John will enjoy it . 🎣 Rebel County SAC – March Species Hunt

March actually decided to behave itself for once — well… slightly.
Still a few savage gusts, the odd soaking, and more than one fella wondering why he didn’t just stay home on the couch watching Britains got Talent.😩

But overall, conditions lifted enough to let the fish and the anglers show a bit more activity this month.

Noel Lane absolutely langered the lot of us this month — didn’t even leave the crumbs. The rest of us were left scrapping for scraps like a load of bai's outside hillbillys on a Saturday night.

March goes to Noel Lane (Junior Member) — and fair play, the young fella he's grafting around the clock so its well deserved.

🐟 Other notable Fish of the Month

Shane Olden also dropped a proper headline fish:

• Club Record Spur
• 125cm / 22.46lb

That’s not a fish you casually land — that’s a fish that lands you if you’re not paying attention. A right baiter of a specimen altogether. Daycent fish. Beating his old club record of 18.33lb and also just 2lb short of beating the current Irish boat record , biggest recorded spurdogs from the shore are just 19lb and just over , but controversialy we are the only country that class shore and boat records as one , but going by records from shore catches it certainly is a record breaking fish .

All in all, March was the first proper taste of things kicking off — more fish, better variety, and a leaderboard starting to look like a scrap rather than a procession.

If this keeps going, we’re in for a daycent year.

Saturday April 4th
Slob bank youghal 💨

A change of venue from the scheduled clonea strand
Because of a yellow warning for wind and rain , undeterred saw the rebels answer back with their own red warning signalling we are on the way . The back up venue for the day was the slob bank youghal which varied the wind to our backs and some times from our right hand side which was a lot better than a head on wind of that strength on any beach . As bad as it was some rebels still managed to keep their shelters fixed to the ground for much welcomed shelter from the rain . The wind was so bad that poor benji HAMMILL lost fishing gear every time he opened his seat box consisting of 2 pkts of sakuma hooks , a pkt of pop ups and a packet of swivels , and if that wasn't bad enough he went to take his phone from his pocket to take a pic of Noah's 40cm flounder and a ten euro note went flying down the bank and into the water , at one stage I see 2 guys trying to retrieve it from the water trying all sorts as if it was a 500 euro note 😂 we won't name and shame them but we'll blame the price of diesel as an excuse this time 🙈😂. Back to the fishing and not having high expectations for the time of year, a long time had passed before the first fish was brought to the measure , that was for our very own minny SOD AKA Stephen watkins with a 37cm flounder . Next up but some time later was John o MAHONY with a double shot of a flounder and a schoolie bass . Hunkered down and tipping away as true rebels do next up was Callum looney with a dog fish to get the junior side of things on the move and close behind him was Luca Hurley with a 36cm bass and a contender for the biggest round fish pool so far . Surely but very slowly the odd fish was turning up while all tactics and distances were exhausted . Next was the flat fish pool contender and probably sealing it off was Noah tahran with a fine conditioned 40cm flounder and it was a turning point driving most lads to target dogfish to try make up some ground but again not many to be had . In the last hour or so the baker boy himself gabriel matejeko managed to find a few fish at distance once the w**d cleared and slowly but surely advanced on those that were lucky enough to find fish in day light hours . 10pm and it was time for lines in and back to the comfort of our cars to tally the scores for our last comp before we take a well earned break until September opening up time for lads to focus on our club species hunt .

As always the rebels persued and produced fish on a very tough day weather wise , and though the tic-tacs got shook up more than ever with that wind, it was what it was on the day . I'd like to thank everyone that turned out on the day with a good turn out of 23 anglers as deterring as it was , also our followers and sponsors who are also part of the team . Our next comp will be mid break in June for our annual smoothound comp sponsored by the tackle shop cork, but we should have plenty of content through out the summer months as rebels scatter all over the country species hunting and hopefully setting a few new club records . FUNDRAISING RAFFLE FOR THE
U16 IRISH YOUTHS TEAM 2026🇮🇪🏆👏🎣

A small raffle to show our support to these talented young men representing club and country and to help out with costs as the team is self funded . 6 of Irelands top youth anglers 2026 will represent ireland traveling to Dover England this July to do us all proud . Rebel county sea anglers are asking all to make an effort not just family and friends to help get these young anglers to the UK and to relieve some of the financial burden on the family's . At the moment we have 5 prizes that will be in the pictures below including a Shakespeare seat box kindly donated by our sponsor .W.MURRAYS CORK . there are some more prizes to be added over the next week which we will keep you all posted in advance . It will be 5euro per entry and entrants can enter as many times as they like, all prizes will be part of the same draw as separate individual prizes allocated to the number of names drawn to the number of prizes .
