Castlerea Golf Course is a parkland 9 hole golf course, in fact one of the best in the West of Ireland. Whites Par 70, Reds Par 71. 0871278066

The newly redesigned tougher course is 6090 yds and is built around a tributary of the splendid River Suck. Green Fees: €20 Monday to Saturday. Societies: Groups and societies are welcome. Castlerea golf club was founded on 9th September 1905. The course was originally located on the Ballymoe road at Harristown. It moved to its present location at Clonalis in 1907. The land was initially leased from the O’Conor Don family. In 1985, the members purchased the freehold interest in the lands. The club house was replaced in 1990/91 when the current building was erected. The club continues to develop the course and grounds and purchased additional lands in 2007. This new development is in close proximity to the famous Clonalis house, the historic seat of the O’Conor Don family. Over the years Castlerea Golf Club has produced many fine and successful golfers. Bertie Briscoe was a member when winning the West of Ireland in 1928 and 1931. Miss Audrey O’Donohoe, whose father was a founder member of the club, represented Ireland from 1948 to 1953 and subsequently became Irish team captain. Rupert de Lacy Staunton was winner of the South of Ireland in 1965 and 1972. He played for Ireland from 1963 to 1973 during which time Ireland won the European Championship for the first time. Rupert also captained the Irish team for a number of years and was a Walker Cup selector. His father Maurice was president of the GUI in 1974. The club currently has a membership of some 700 comprising all categories of members. Full details of membership and subscription rates are to be obtained on our membership page. Our final presentation event of 2026 took place on Friday, 30th October.

Competition prizes presented on the evening included 18 hole men’s and ladies competitions sponsored by:
- Mulvihills
- Hesters Golden Eagle bar & restaurant
- Tully’s Hotel
- Kearney’s Chemist
- Corrib Oil
- The Cosy Bar
- Apache Pizza

Ladies 9-hole competition sponsored by Veterinary Clinic, Main Street and men’s golfer of the month (September & October), sponsored by O’Ceallaigh Bagpiping, and Round Robin prizes were also presented.

One of the highlights of the evening was the announcement of Patrick O’Connor Jnr as the 2026 Men’s Club Golfer of the Year. Congratulations to Patrick and sincere thanks to Colour Communications for annual sponsorship of the Men’s Club Golfer of the Year competition, including trophy and prize.

Sincere thanks go to all competition sponsors throughout the golfing year. All club members continue to be encouraged to shop local where possible and particularly to support our sponsors’ businesses.

The Women’s Club had a wonderful evening of presentations and celebrations at the Clubhouse on Tuesday evening, 27th October.

Lady Captain Pauline Glynn welcomed fellow golfers and extended a special welcome and expressed sincere gratitude to competition sponsors - all of whom attended in person on the evening.

The House Committee catered a wonderful supper, Liam C kept the drinks flowing and the following prize winners were announced and celebrated:

Liam Walsh presented the Breda Walsh Memorial Golfer of the Year perpetual trophy and prize – sponsored by Liam in his mother’s memory – to the Women’s Club 2026 Golfer of the Year - Valerie Callaghan

The winner of the 2026 Silver Medal was presented by Lady Captain Pauline to Mary Colleary
The winner of the 2026 Bronze Medal was presented by Lady Captain Pauline to Valerie Callaghan

Anthony Cahill presented the 2026 Cahill’s SuperValu Foursomes Matchplay Competition prizes to the competition finalists:
o Winning Pair – Mary Gunning & Lady Captain Pauline Glynn
o Runner-Up Pair – Catherine Collins & Marian Keaveney

The McGuire Cup, was presented by John McGuire to the 18-hole stroke competition winner Valerie Callaghan; 2nd prize went to Elizabeth Devine and 3rd Prize to Ruth Sullivan. John travelled from Dublin especially for the presentation - this being the 49th presentation of the McGuire Cup and prizes, sponsored by John in his parents’ memory.

Mary Gunning presented the 2026 Gunning Electrical Birdie Tree Prize to Ruth Sullivan.

The winning and runner-up teams in the Halloween Scramble (which took place earlier in the day) were also announced, as were the best dressed prize winners 🎃👻 🧙‍♀️
