⛰️ Greek mountains hold secrets and magical worlds waiting to be explored... 🏔️✨
🦕 Sixty million years ago, where the steep cliffs of Meteora now stand, prehistoric creatures used to swim. A vast seabed once covered all of Thessaly, leaving behind the unique conglomerate rock we touch today
The history of movement:
• 🧗‍♀️ Via Ferrata (The Iron Path): Born in the Dolomites during WWI, when the need to move troops and heavy gear to isolated peaks made the impassable... accessible
• 🧗🏾‍♀️ Via Cordata (The Rope Path): The ultimate movement technique for exposed terrain, where safety and trust in the rope are everything.
🏃Freedom in the mountains is earned through training. 🏃‍♂️💨
💪When physical fitness meets technical skill, the mountain stops being an obstacle and becomes the ultimate field of action!

⚡️ 104 kilometers and 5,600 meters of positive elevation gain.
🗻 Three days of running through dense Fir forests, technical trails, and exposed ridgelines.
⛪️ We traversed breathtaking paths and sites of deep heritage, such as the historic Varnakova Monastery (founded in 1077), Krokyleio the birthplace of General Makriyannis and the legendary village of Pentagioi. The forests of Cephalonian Fir, ancient planes, and oaks were just a few of the natural wonders we were fortunate enough to witness.
🌲 In the forests of Dorida, where the fir trees block out the sun and nature commands respect through its silence, the trails tested our limits. But when you have someone by your side, you can find joy in even the most grueling ascent.
⏳ We battled against time, pain, the cold, and our own inner shadows.
🌁 We were moved, gaining experiences and imagery that will stay with us for a lifetime.
👉 When exhaustion sets in, mountain expertise is the key that transforms doubt into a triumphant finish.

😂 «So what if he broke the world marathon record? Why should I care? I’m not a runner.»
📚 For the record, for those who don’t know,
Kenyan marathoner Sabastian Sawe set a new world record on April 26, 2026, with a time of 1:59:30 at the London Marathon

👉 It is clear, then, that we aren’t just talking about another athletic performance, but a human achievement of historic proportions

😢 I feel for those who fall into the classic and easy trap of mediocrity and cynicism, because a feat like this doesn’t just concern the running community it concerns the whole world

👉 When one person pushes the limits of our physiology, they redefine what is possible for the entire human race. You don’t need to be an astronaut to feel proud that man stepped on the moon, nor a painter to be moved by a Da Vinci masterpiece

⚡️ 1:59:30 is a biological work of art

👉 If a human being can run at 21 km/h for 42 kilometers, then you can certainly go out for a walk, you can definitely start the exercise your body so desperately needs, and you can surely tackle a difficult day at work

💪 Human beings weren’t made just to sit, eat, and be comfortable, but for much greater things than we can imagine

⛰️ We have the power to conquer our own personal summits where the air is thin, but the view is clear.

👉 I think it’s time we clarified some fundamental things about mountain running and ultra trail
👉When we say “mountain running,” we mean exactly that: running in a mountain environment. Mountains have always been, are, and always will be unpredictable no matter how advanced our weather forecasting models become
🏔️ An ultra trail runner is not simply a long-distance runner. He or she is more of a mountaineer than a runner. Beyond physical fitness, one must possess knowledge of gear, navigation skills, crisis management, and above all humility in front of the mountain
❄️You must be prepared to face anything: heat, dehydration, heatstroke, cold, heavy rain, snow, and hypothermia
❌We don’t bring the ultra trail down to our own level. We must rise to meet its standards
😔 At this year’s Evia Ultra Trail, unfortunately, I saw things that genuinely saddened me:
• Athletes who, after passing the mandatory gear check, left pieces of equipment behind to save weight.
• Ultra runners who didn’t know how to read the GPX file on their watch — or didn’t even have one.
• Drop bags without a change of warm clothes and other basic essentials
💪 The mindset of a true ultra trail runner is to always choose the hard path, not the easy one.
Blaming the organization is the easy way out. Mistakes were certainly made (perhaps one of them was setting relatively lenient entry criteria). However, I must say that the organizers made a serious effort to reach European standards. They showed vision, responsibility, and
most importantly the courage to stop the races when needed in order to protect the athletes
⛰️ Personally, I was always against interrupting mountain races. After what I witnessed this yearI changed my mind
🙏Let’s show respect for the mountain and for the sport. Let’s learn from our mistakes and leave our egos aside

🗻🗻🗻Οι τρεις κορυφές της Αττικής
🏛️Στην αρχαιότητα οι τρεις κορυφές Υμηττός-Πεντέλη-Πάρνηθα δεν ήταν απλά βουνά αλλά ιερά σημεία επικοινωνίας
🗻Ο Υμηττός είχε το Ναό του Όμβριου Διός (αυτού που φέρνει την βροχή)
🗻 Η Πεντέλη ήταν το ιερό της Αθηνάς Παιονίας και πηγή μαρμάρου του Παρθενώνα
🗻 Η Πάρνηθα είχε το ιερό του Παρνηθίου Διός και το στρατηγικό πέρασμα της Φυλής
🏃Οι αρχαίοι ημεροδρόμοι επίλεκτο σώμα του αθηναϊκού στρατού και δρομείς υπεραποστάσεων έπρεπε να διανύσουν τα ορεινά περάσματα για να μεταφέρουν ειδήσεις που οι φωτιές από τις φρυκτωρίες δεν έφταναν
⛰️Ειδικότερα στον Πελλοπονησιακό πόλεμο τα τρία αυτά βουνά αποτελούσαν φυσικό τείχος της πόλης όπου οι ημεροδρόμοι έπρεπε να κινούνται αστραπιαία ανάμεσα στα παρατηρητήρια των κορυφών
💡Εμπνευσμένος από ιστορίες του Ηροδότου, Πλούταρχου και Παυσανία αναρωτήθηκα μέσα μου αν θα μπορούσε να σχεδιαστεί μια διαδρομή που να ξεκινάει από το μέρος που μεγάλωσα στην Ηλιούπολη και να περιλαμβάνει και τρία αυτά ιερά βουνά με τις κορυφές τους
💪Τίποτα δεν συμβαίνει λένε αν πρώτα δεν είναι όνειρο ! Βέβαια από το όνειρο ως την πραγματικότητα υπάρχει πολύ μεγάλη απόσταση
🙈Τα προβλήματα πολλά μιας και μιλάμε για μια απόσταση από 70-90 χιλιόμετρα με το λιγότερο 3000 θετικής υψομετρικής διαφοράς χωρίς καμία εξωτερική υποστήριξη μήνα Μάρτιο κουβαλώντας όλο το νερό το φαγητό αλλά και τον εξοπλισμό ασφαλείας που πρέπει να έχουμε. Πολύ διαφορετικό στήσιμο και φιλοσοφία από τις διοργανώσεις ultra που τρέχουμε που υπάρχει σταθμός ανά 10-20 χιλιόμετρα ιατρική κάλυψη και ότι άλλο χρειάζεται
🎉26 Φεβρουαρίου είχα τα γενέθλια μου, έτσι αποφάσισα να κάνω ένα δώρο στα δύο μου επαγγελματικά δημιουργήματα το Athens endurance academy και το Athens running tours έτσι ώστε αφού ζήσω ο ίδιος την εμπειρία και αντιμετωπίσω και τα όποια προβλήματα παρουσιαστούν να καταφέρω μια μέρα να προσφέρω αυτή την διαδρομή με ασφάλεια σε άλλους αθλητές που θα τολμήσουν να ζήσουν κάτι μοναδικό!
🤞Φυσικά κάτι τέτοιο δεν θα μπορούσε να γίνει χωρίς ένα καλό φίλο. Έχω την τύχη να έχω φίλο τον Νίκο τον Κοντογιάννη ο οποίος εκτός από το σπάνιο ήθος που τον χαρακτηρίζει έχει την δεξιότητα και την ικανότητα να ακολουθήσει σε ένα τέτοιο εγχείρημα. Ο Νίκος με το που άκουσε την ιδέα ενθουσιάστηκε!
🥷Την Παρασκευή λοιπόν στις 6 Μαρτίου γύρω στις 11 την νύχτα ξεκινήσαμε την περιπέτεια μας
👉Η διαδρομή ήταν σχεδιασμένη να διαρκέσει περίπου 13 ώρες με ανεφοδιασμό τα ξημερώματα στους πρόποδες της Πάρνηθας και εορταστικό γεύμα σε ένα από τα δυο ορειβατικά καταφύγια της Πάρνηθας
🌚Η μαγεία της νύχτας και των μονοπατιών της Αττικής μας συνεπήρε αμέσως αντιμετωπίζοντας μηδενικά προβλήματα ως και την Πεντέλη
🚀Η ταχύτητα μας ήταν μεγαλύτερη των προσδοκιών μας έως που φτάσαμε στην Πάρνηθα όπου εκεί αντιμετωπίσαμε κάποια προβλήματα
❌Στην Πάρνηθα κάποια μονοπάτια τα βρήκαμε εντελώς κλειστά εξ αιτίας των τελευταίων πυρκαγιών κάτι που είχε ως αποτέλεσμα να είναι αδύνατο να τα περάσει κάποιος. Αυτό μας ανάγκασε να ψάχνουμε συνέχεια εναλλακτικές διαδρομές χάνοντας τουλάχιστον 3 ώρες και οι προμήθειες να έχουν σχεδόν τελειώσει
💪Ευτυχώς δουλέψαμε στρατηγικά και καταφέραμε να ολοκληρώσουμε την αποστολή μας με επιτυχία
🏛️ Σίγουρα δεν είμαστε ημεροδρόμοι της αρχαίας Αθήνας του 431 π.Χ αλλά για μια νύχτα στα βουνά της Αττικής νιώσαμε λίγο σαν αυτούς…

🗻 The Three Peaks of Attica

In ancient times, the mountains of Attica — Hymettus, Penteli and Parnitha — were not just mountains.
They were sacred communication points for the ancient Athenians.

🏛️ Hymettus hosted the temple of Ombrios Zeus — the god who brings rain.
🏛️ Penteli was the sanctuary of Athena Paionia and the source of the marble used for the Parthenon.
🏛️ Parnitha held the sanctuary of Parnithian Zeus and the strategic pass of Phyle.

🏃 The ancient hemerodromoi, elite messengers of the Athenian army and legendary long-distance runners, crossed these mountains to deliver messages when signal fires could not reach their destination.

💡 Inspired by the writings of Herodotus, Plutarch and Pausanias, I wondered:

Could a route connect all three sacred mountains starting from the neighborhood where I grew up in Ilioupoli?

💪 A dream… that quickly turned into a serious challenge.

All food, water and safety gear carried with us.

🎉 After my birthday on February 26th, I decided to give a gift to my two professional projects:

Athens Endurance Academy
&
Athens Running Tours

First I had to experience the challenge myself.

🤝 Luckily, a good friend was ready for the adventure.
Nikos Kontogiannis immediately said yes.

🌙 On March 6th at 23:00 our journey began.

The magic of the Attica trails at night carried us forward. Everything went smoothly until Penteli.

🚀 Our pace was faster than expected…

…until we reached Parnitha.

🔥 Several trails were completely blocked due to the recent wildfires. We had to constantly search for alternative routes, losing almost 3 hours while our supplies were running low.

💪 But strategy, patience and teamwork won.

Mission accomplished.

🏛️ We may not live in the Athens of 431 BC, and we may not be ancient hemerodromoi…

…but for one night in the mountains of Attica, we felt a little closer to them.

🌲 This was only a test run.

Soon this route will be available as a guided endurance experience, including an overnight stay at a mountain refuge, for athletes from Greece and abroad with true endurance spirit and love for adventure.
