WHAT’S THE FIRST THING I LOOK AT WHEN COACHING A GOLFER?
A new online student recently asked me this brilliant question — and the answer might not be what you expect.
Before I make a single swing change, I start with one thing…
What is the golf ball telling me? 🤔
The ball flight gives us the clues. From there, I look at what I call THE BIG THREE:
✅ Face Strike – Where are you finding the clubface?
✅ Ground Contact – Are you controlling where the club meets the turf?
✅ Clubface Control – Where is the face pointing at impact?
Once we understand these three things, we can start working backwards to find the real cause — whether that’s grip, aim, setup, ball position, posture or the golf swing itself.
Too many golfers immediately start trying to change their swing without first understanding what actually needs fixing.
My coaching philosophy is simple:
DO THE BASICS BRILLIANTLY 👊
Understand impact first. Then build the swing around what the golf ball actually needs.
