At the weekend myself and a few others travelled to Andover for another training session with Sensei Terry Donoghue. Training was difficult but very much worth my time. Lots to practice as always with these sessions. Thanks go to Terry and to my training partner for the majority of the afternoon Alberto for teaching me and ultimately for their patience in going over old ground. Thanks to Georgina for driving the 10,000 mile journey and thanks to Dave Harris and Lawrence King for giving me some pointers in the right direction. Always great to meet up with Rachel and everyone even if i don't get the chance to train with each other. And finally thanks has to go to Dave Bonthuys who hosted the event in his spectacular Dojo. Very much appreciated.

On Monday we had the pleasure of having Sensei Ron Ship train with us. Uechi Ryu wouldn't not even have made it to the United Kingdom when it did if it wasn't for Ron. I for one would have definitely not be training in uechi as Ron was my instuctors sensei. Some of the higher grades who i still train with still thank Ron for being their sensei too back in the day. Despite having health issues he still managed to teach the class and check our form. Everyone appreciated the effort made and you are more than welcome back to our club anytime you want.

Back in December we held a black belt examination for a couple of my students. I was very happy to say that both of the guys did a great job and passed the grading. Just before Easter the certificates were received from Okinawa and I had the pleasure of awarding Luke his along with my instructor and good friend Paul Natzyl. Luke has been a long time friend of mine training with me when Paul ran the clubs. Exchanging ideas and the occasional bruise but he was always what you wanted in a training partner and friend. The belt and this certificate was a long time coming (like this post 🤣) but well deserved.

I haven't posted in a while as I have been busy on other projects...which is a great way of saying catching up with all the things that I should have done way before Christmas 😂

So here we have Ernest who desperately wanted to be given his blue belt. I said to him that i wouldn't be handing out any belts and that he would have to earn it like everyone else. We discussed what he needed to show and he got to work. Ernest turned up at extra classes and practiced at home between classes. So before Easter he took his grading in front of his class and family and showed that he was a blue belt. When I handed him his belt I reminded Ernest that I wasn't giving him a belt...he had worked hard to achieve it himself and I think he wears it with a bit more pride knowing this.

So here we have Ernest showing off his new belt....before sharing the stage with his friend Arthur and his brother Theo wanting to share in the glory. 🤣🤣

Well done mate. Thats how to get your grades.

We had a fantastic training session yesterday morning. Dexter from our Friday class came and trained with the adults and managed to show why he should be a 9th kyu, and who are we to argue. Great work Dexter. I will get the certificate and belt to you later this week (he's says confidently whilst rummaging through his stock that he "tidied up" before Christmas with a confused look upon his face.)

Well, when most wind down in December we just kept going. On the back of the Black belt grading Neil, Finlay and Amber passed their green belt exams Monday night. Tuesday night saw the same for Amelia and Oliver and on Thursday Jake and Archer also passed. Little power rocket Jessica passed her yellow belt and on Friday Theo and Arthur got their red belt grades. And then... the fun started. Karate in disco lighting, nerf gun firing range and the all important "Karate party" which shouldn't be missed for the world.🤣🤣

Thanks to all the students and parents for supporting the club this year. I couldn't do this without you. Have a merry Christmas and we start again on Sunday the 4th of January 2026...assuming I can still fit into my Karate gi that is. 🤣🤣
