Did you know.....The Tongue πŸ‘… is the most sensitive part of your horse's mouth and the most prone to injury.

This very large muscle extends from its tip, which you can see, to the hyoid apparatus and its attachment to the ramus of the mandible at the back.

The tongue is vital for swallowing and influencing the hyoid apparatus

Like any other muscle, restriction or tension within it can induce a muscular chain reaction.

The sensitivity of the tongue is a crucial consideration when fitting a bit. An ill-fitting or harsh bit or excessive pressure on the bit from your hands can cause pain and discomfort. In some cases it can result in tension throughout the body and poor performance.

🐎 Sometimes it’s easy to forget how far you’ve come 🐎

Today has been a good day πŸ₯°

Today I have been able to help:

πŸ‡ A horse rider who had chronic lower back pain, which prevented her from standing for more than one hour without it being a problem.

We’ve spent the last few weeks helping her with foot balance (no foot no horse, well the same goes for people), releasing muscle and joint tension by addressing the biomechanical movement chains that can cause lower back pain. We’ve also devised a small, manageable balance and core exercise programme which is massively helping all those important injury prevention reflexes in her body fire up.

The result:

βœ… Better movement
βœ… Better posture
βœ… And a hugely happier lower back, especially in the saddle πŸŽ‰

πŸ‘‘ We also saw our treadmill Queen, who has been using the treadmill for several years. She has a bucket list of old injures and arthritic joints, but thanks to a team effort, she’s out there, still smiling and her hugely dedicated owner is living her best pony life πŸ’ͺ🏻πŸ₯°

πŸ’¦ We’ve had several regular treadmill clients, whose horses are looking very pleased with themselves, and said hello to some lovely old clients who have returned for more water treadmill help πŸ’¦πŸ™πŸ»

πŸ€• A chiropractic session on a mare that’s feeling a bit ouchy, so a chat with the vet to make sure she’s getting all the care and attention she needs. There’s that team thing againπŸ™πŸ»

πŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸ»πŸŽ‰ And finally the beyond amazing Jo and Bonnie who are back in keeping up the fitness and core strength hot off their inspirational journey from John O’Groates to Landsend πŸ‡πŸ€©πŸ₯³

I’m living the dream I mapped out 25 years ago when I first went to university to train in human chiropractic. Lucky me πŸ’«

Thank you to all of my clients for being a part of the bigger equine health and performance picture and to Auntie Ella for being a fabulous treadmill wingwoman 🀩

Please have a look at your bridle headpieces.

Pressure points (think a tight hat or sunglasses, after 2 minutes you want them off) can be the cause of:

🀯 Evasion
🀯 High Head carriage
🀯 Going behind the vertical
🀯 Reluctance to engage the core
🀯 Headshaking

The list of performance issues goes on.

And it might just be that your brow band is too tight and is pulling the headpiece forward.

Please get your bridle checked πŸ™πŸ»

It doesn’t always mean you need a new bridle. It might however mean you get a horse that is comfortable and you can chuck the martingale away? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

If you would like any help with with, please do message me, I’m here to help πŸ™πŸ»

🐴 your horses dirt can tell you a massive story!

Have a look at this horse's headpiece.

You can see that the left side of the headpiece has considerably more grease on than the right. The right virtually has non.

What does that mean?
In this case the
- pressure is being focused onto this one side in on a very small surface area
- its on the back of the headpiece, showing that the headpiece is being tilted backwards
- the headpiece doesn't touch evenly over the whole surface area therefore doesn't suit anatomically to this horse. As pressure should be evenly spread for optimum comfort.

This horse's body worker had picked up on a tightness at the base of the ear to poll region. Its likely that this style of split headpiece was focusing the pressure there and causing discomfort and tightness.

What does your dirt say about your bridle (and saddle) fit? You can do the same with a saddle. Take the saddle cloth away and just ride with the saddle against the back. See the pressure distribution of grease on the underside. It will say a lot about how you ride and how the horse responds.
