The Saxons are back in the league.

This is a massive step forward for the club and for our 2XV.

After a few difficult years rebuilding after Covid, getting a regular second team out has not always been easy. Last season showed what can be done though — with a monumental effort from three lads in particular, you know who you are, and a proper club-wide push, the Saxons managed to get 6/7 games played and started building some real momentum again.

At this year’s AGM, the club agreed it was time to chuck our hat back in the ring and enter the social league for the coming season.

The aim is simple: get lads playing rugby, be competitive in the right spirit, enjoy our Saturdays, and keep building the club from top to bottom.

A big moment for the Saxons. A big moment for Sedgy.

On Saturday, our Scrum Half Freddie McCormack represented the Durham County Select side in their fixture against a Hartlepool Select team at Hartlepool Rovers.

Freddie played two 20-minute periods and put in a strong performance throughout, showing great determination and skill. Competing alongside and against players from a higher level, he more than held his own and demonstrated the quality and commitment that we see every week.

A fantastic experience for Freddie and a well-deserved opportunity to showcase his talent. Everyone at the club is proud of his achievement and looks forward to seeing his continued development.

New league. Less miles. More local battles.

After a bit of reshuffling from Durham RFU, the league structure has taken on a new look for the coming season, with a few bigger clubs’ 2nd and 3rd teams now joining the mix.

For Sedgy, it means a fresh challenge for the 1XV, some cracking local fixtures, and — thankfully — a lot less time spent travelling.

Plenty of familiar names, a few new tests, and proper Saturday rugby for the lads and the club to get behind.

Same Sedgy. New challenge.

Saturday night was a fantastic way to round off the season at our End of Season Awards 🎉

Here are your 2025/26 award winners:

Young Player of the Season – Freddie McCormack
Freddie has really made the scrum-half position his own this year, growing in confidence and developing his game knowledge throughout the season.

Most Improved Player – Ciaran Lines
Ciaran has shown great versatility, learning the game across multiple positions and demonstrating impressive pace out on the wing.

Coaches’ Player of the Season – Massimo Impagliazzo
A huge presence on the pitch, Massimo has been a valuable asset with big tackles in defence and strong attacking runs.

Players’ Player & Committee Player of the Season – Mitch Corney
Our skipper has led from the front, finishing the season with 29 tries. On his day, he’s simply unstoppable in attack.

Ted Wood Award (Commitment to the Club) – Steve Nuttall (awarded posthumously)
We remain incredibly grateful for everything Steve did for the club, from managing finances to securing sponsorship and so much more. It meant a great deal to have his family join us, with Julie, Steph and Neve accepting the award on his behalf.

Saxons Player of the Season – James Walker
Since joining through touch rugby, James has improved massively and played a key role in organising the Saxons, helping keep the team running week in, week out. Thanks also to Jack Anderson and Ian Storey for their support throughout the season.

The Nutts Award (new for this season, in memory of Steve Nutall) – James Watson
Awarded for commitment beyond the game, James has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help keep the club running this season.

Today we came together at the Wok to remember club members who are sadly no longer with us, but will always be part of Sedgefield Rugby Club.

A commemorative tree and plaque now stand as a lasting tribute to their contribution, friendship and memories.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make it such a fitting moment.
