☀️ KEEPING YOUR DOGS SAFE AND COOL IN THE HEAT ☀️
Hi everyone,
With the summer temperatures climbing, it's incredibly important to remember how quickly our four-legged companions can overheat. Because dogs primarily cool down by panting rather than sweating, high heat risks rapid dehydration and life-threatening heatstroke.
Please take extra precautions with your dogs at home this week. Here are a few essential tips to keep them comfortable:
* Skip the Midday Walks: Limit exercise to the very early morning or late evening when temperatures drop. If it's still humid at night, a mental enrichment puzzle indoors is a much safer alternative to a walk.
* The 5-Second Tarmac Test: Asphalt and pavements absorb massive amounts of heat. Place the back of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paw pads! Stick to shaded grass.
* Hydration Stations: Provide multiple water bowls around the house and garden in case one gets knocked over. Tossing a few ice cubes into their bowl is a great way to keep it chilled.
* Cooling Mats & Damp Towels: Offer a cooling mat or a damp towel for them to lie on. Crucial Tip: Never drape a wet towel over a hot dog, as this can trap the heat against their body like a greenhouse. Let them lie on top of it instead.
* Ditch the Car: Even on a seemingly mild day, interior car temperatures can double in minutes. Leave your dogs at home in a well-ventilated room.

🚨 Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Early detection saves lives. Keep a close eye out for:
* Continuous, heavy panting or noisy breathing
* Excessive drooling or thick, sticky saliva
* Lethargy, drowsiness, or an unwillingness to move
* Uncoordinated movement or staggering
Emergency Action: If you suspect heatstroke, cool first, transport second. Immediately move your dog into the shade, pour cool (not freezing) water over their body—focusing on their neck, tummy, and inner thighs—and call your vet straight away.
