A wee reminder to our members.
At this time of year if you start hitting smolts it’s best to move on leave them in peace.
Wherever possible fish barbless and if you do land one when targeting trout, releasing them with wet hands as quickly as possible.
They tend to hang around in shoals and it’s often obvious when you come across them.
If nymphing you’ll get constant nibbles on every cast and it’s easy to get seduced into thinking it might be something bigger.
These smolts are part of the future broodstock of the river so take care.
Smolts are young salmon that have gone through a physical change, their scales going silver in anticipation of the migration to the ocean.
They can vary in size, depending on how long they have been in the river .
Tight lines and please ensure you have a valid permit when fishing.
No permit means no fishing.
