Highlights of the latest crowded week of running events included one of the all time classic mountain races, this is the formidable and long established Welsh 1000 metres race which takes in, as you might guess, some of the highest peaks in Eryri. Three Prestatyn Running Club runners took part in the short course event which still climbed some of the highest peaks including Yr Wyddfa and a double traverse of Crib Goch. With a heroic effort over the very challenging short course race, Nicki Triggs and Ben Thomas sticking closely together throughout, came second in the pairs category in 3:35. Gareth Jones with a time of 2:32:59 completed the male solo male division with another immense display of long distance mountain running.

Earlier in the week eight Prestatyn mountain runners continued their assault on the Eryri Tuesday night race series, this time they were tackling Mynydd Mawr at Fron near Caernarfon on a steamy night. Representing PRC were Ben Thomas 45:11, Gareth Jones 46:14, Adam Jeffers 53:46, Andy Thomas 55.05, Liz Martin 63.19, Nem James 69:06, Nicki Triggs 72:03, Carly Wong 78:39.

An enthusiastic group of members competed in an annual evening event which has been very popular with club members for a number of years; this is the 5 mile Deganwy Dash, which takes in some of the coastal path over the bay from Conwy. Weather forecasts had indicated that temperatures would be starting to drop by Friday. This just didn’t happen and, for the unfortunate 28 club members who took part, the evening temperature was still in the mid 20’s and furthermore there wasn’t a breath of wind to cool runners down.

First senior male and second overall was Jonah Armstrong in 28:39. Second female and first under 20 was Erin Thomas with a very impressive 33.58 and Ollie Birch Jones won the under 20 male class in 29.31 in sixth overall. Other Prestatyn timings included new member Ryan Bateman in 30:25, Dan Williams 32:23, Dafydd Montgomery 32:37, Marc Jones 33:50 (1st V60), Stephen Stocker 34:13, Dan Liddle 35:04, Darrell Jones 35:18, Paul Sanders 35:49, Jack Hughes 36:11, Judah Eastwell 36:45, Beth English 38:21, Andy Thomas 39:28, Nem James 39:59, Chris Bennett 40:36, Martin Cortvriend 41:14 (2nd V70), Olivia Trimm 41:48, Megan Lewis 42:51, Tilly Jones 43:05, Philip Rawson Howarth 43:34, Susan Hughes (1st FV65) 44:32, Andy Scott 48:41, Kieran Williams 51:17, Clare Manifold 51:17, Michael Davis 57:14, Clare Manley 58:43.

Three intrepid Prestatyn runners took a pleasant trip to New Brighton for the Wirral Running Festival, Chris Snow finished the 10K in 59:29 and, completing the half marathon were Kelly Lewis 2:10:07 and Debbie Jones 2:13:55 (3rd FV55). Slightly further afield the improving Alex Ryder achieved his aim of a sub 37 minutes time by some margin in the Greater Manchester 10K he came 186th out of around 30,000 runners in a superb 35:55. Finally heading across North Wales in the other direction Nick Chadwick took on the scenic Abersoch 10K and did well with a time of 49:12.

A number of the Friday night Deganwy competitors doubled up (at a steadier pace understandably) at Saturday morning parkruns. Full club parkrun results are as follows:

Nova Prestatyn parkrun 14th Jonathan Puleston Jones 20:14, 21st Lisa Lines 21:43 (3rd lady), 23rd Jonah Armstrong 21:50, 32nd Tim Cahill 23:05, 35th Alex Ryder 23:14, 38th Oliver Birch Jones 23:40, 42nd Neil Davidson 23:58, 52nd Gareth Bailey 25:03 (pb), 61st Andy Thomas 25:34, 63rd David Tudor 25:42, 73rd Olivia Trimm 26:17, 111th Cathy Wood 28:45, 163 David Roberts 32:13, 191st Emma Birchall 33:47, 232nd Judah Eastwell 37:01, 318 Martin Cortvriend (parkwalker) 59:00.

The prospect of competing in one of the country’s fastest races may be off-putting for some, but eight members of Prestatyn Running Club were pleased they made the trip to last week’s Mid-Cheshire 5k.

With 300 runners finishing inside 17 minutes the quality is obvious and it rubbed off on the Prestatyn contingent, all of whom had good reason to be delighted with their performances.

They included Ryan Bateman, who was making his competitive debut for the club.

The placings were: 148 Tom Carter 15.47, 384 Alex Ryder 17.11, 418 Oliver Birch-Jones 17.20, 592 Ben Lewis 18.28, 740 Marc Jones 19.53, 750 Ryan Bateman 20.50, 792 Paul Sanders 20.33, 820 Zack Webster 21.13.

Supervet Martin Cortvriend doubled up at the weekend, following up an outing in the Nova Parkrun on Saturday by winning the M70 class in Sunday’s Mynydd Myfyr fell-race at Trefonen, near Oswestry. The 4-mile race involves 150 metres of climbing, and Martin clocked 36.34.

Missing from last week’s results from the Chester Half-Marathon was the name of recent recruit Nick Chadwick, who finished in 1-39.41.

Northern Ireland, Northumberland, Nottingham and the Lake District were among the Parkrun venues visited by members on Saturday, when conditions were conducive for fast times.

In the Nova run Evan Lewis recorded his second top-3 placing, setting a new pb of 18.55.

Two members of Prestatyn Running Club have received a unique honour by being named as the North Wales Cross-Country Association’s first Life Members.

The announcement was made at the Association’s AGM in Gwersyllt where both Roger Harrison-Jones and Gareth Hughes had turned up to represent the club.

Roger, still competing at the age of 89, is a legend in the sport, having won the very first North Wales League fixture in 1958.

He has gained numerous honours including being reserve for the Welsh team for the Empire (now Commonwealth) Games in 1958, captaining the Welsh cross-country team five times and picking up awards at international level.

Gareth, 80, who founded Prestatyn Running Club in 1982 and is currently club president, was recognised for his work in organising local, regional, national and international competitions, and finding challenging courses at different venues. He also still competes in road and cross-country events.

Both have previously received Meritorious Awards from Welsh Athletics.

Twenty club members were among the large field in Sunday’s Chester half-marathon, some of them having taken things easy in the previous day’s Parkruns.

The finishing times were (chip times): 102 Dafydd Montgomery 83.22, 121 Oliver Birch-Jones 83.58, 300 Lewis Pierce 89.05, 317 Ben Lewis 89.46, 344 Kieran Williams 89.44, 423 Adam Jeffers 91.57, 444 Luke Bodman 92.20, 520 Marc Jones 93.32, 1166 Zack Webster 1-41.31, 1337 Judah Eastwell 1-43.28, 1496 Jonah Armstrong 1-44.59, 1591 Jack Hughes 1-42.48, 2218 Tilly Jones 1-50.07, 2027 Andy Thomas 1-50.46, 2658 Olivia Timms 1-54.19, 3220 Owen Gibson 1-56.50, 3410 Alice Archer 1-56.29, 4270 Laura Rich 2-06.27, 5556 Casey Blake 2-19.04, 5627 Claire Manifold 2-20.05.

Karl Martin had his best run in a long time in the latest event in the Tuesday Evening Fellracing Series, a severe up-and-down race on Y Garn. He was the first of five members in the line-up, coming 94th overall in 52.48.

Other placings were: 98 Neil Davidson 54.05, 101 Mark Dakeyne 56.23, 102 Phil Howarth 56.37, 106 Liz Martin 63.01.

Twenty members turned out for a “naked” 5k on the Dyserth walkway in which they had to guess their finishing time and leave their watches behind.

The most accurate estimate came from the club’s most improved women, Tilly Jones, who was just six seconds out.
