A quick update for our home ed families 🌲

When I first started pulling together plans for our home education sessions, I spoke with a few local parents about what would actually make life easier for you. The main takeaway was really clear: you want a proper, progressive wilderness curriculum for the kids, but being forced into rigid, full-term bookings just doesn’t suit how home ed life works.

So, I’ve reworked how the Home Ed Woodland Academy runs to make it as flexible as possible.

Instead of locking you into a full term, you can now:
* Use a Flexi-Pass (3, 6, or 12 sessions): Gets you the best rate and lets you pick and choose only the specific dates that work around your family’s schedule.
* Book single sessions (£17): Perfect if you just want to take it week by week or try a session out first.

We’re following the accredited WILD Passport curriculum, which means the kids build real skills over time across five core areas—fire craft, tools, shelter, ropework, and nature. If you grab a 6 or 12-session pass, they also get their own physical tracking booklet to log their achievements.

To keep things safe and properly mentored, groups are kept small at just 6 places per session:
* Wednesdays (9:30am – 12:00pm): Adventurers (Ages 8–12)
* Fridays (9:30am – 12:00pm): Pathfinders (Ages 12–16)

Our first sessions start next week. If you'd like to read more or book a few dates, everything is up on the website:

And just like that, Day 5 (and another summer club!) is complete!

We finished the week on a high today, diving into some proper natural woodland crafts using what the forest gives us.

The kids spent the morning processing fresh nettle stems—peeling away the outer skin and clearing out the inner woody pith. We laid the fibres out to dry over lunch, and by the afternoon everyone was busy twisting their dried strands into fantastic natural cordage bracelets.

To round off the day, we got stuck into a bit of Hapa Zome (leaf bashing). Armed with wooden mallets, the group hammered leaves, berries, and foliage onto fabric, transferring all those brilliant natural dyes to make some awesome prints to take home.

Huge praise to all our young adventurers this week—they’ve worked hard, looked after each other, and made it such a fun week in the woods.

Time to rest up after a brilliant week! A massive thank you to everyone who joined us—we can’t wait to welcome you back to the woods next time!

Day 4 complete at the Bushcraft holiday club!

Today was all about tool skills, teamwork, and creative woodland builds. To manage the heat and keep everyone shaded, the kids split into three groups and rotated through three hands-on stations across the day.

At the whittling station, they got to work crafting their own wooden tent pegs, focusing on notch-cutting technique and safe tool handling. Over at the cordage station, they tackled paracord weaving to make custom bracelets and miniature paracord people—with some of the kids stepping up brilliantly to teach the others.

Station three was all about the miniature village build, and the creativity was fantastic. The groups constructed intricate moss shelters, a working mini bungee jump, and even a woodland swimming pool for their paracord people!

We refuelled with campfire hot dogs for lunch, and enjoyed a slice of birthday cake to celebrate one of the group before heading home.

Another packed, brilliant day in the woods. Rest up tonight, and we’ll see you tomorrow for our final day focused on woodland arts and crafts!

Day 3 complete at the Bushcraft holiday club!

Today was all about Navigation & Survival. On our walk up to basecamp, we kicked off with natural navigation—learning how to read the woods to find North using branch growth, moss patterns, and the sun.

Back at camp, the group got to grips with compasses and OS maps, locating where we were on the estate and finding the areas where everyone lives. Then it was time to put those skills to the test with an orienteering challenge, hunting down hidden markers in the woods and surrounding fields and stamping their sheets.

We took a moment to slow down with a sensory 'sit spot' exercise (tuning into 5 things we could see, 4 things we could feel, 3 we could hear...), before diving into survival scenarios. The group learned the wilderness 'Rule of 3s', essential emergency signalling, and even how to safely create smoke signals over the fire pit.

We also chatted about the partial solar eclipse—and I was lucky enough to catch a great view of it popping through the clouds after camp finished this evening!

A packed, brilliant day. Rest up tonight, and we’ll see you tomorrow for campfire tools and cooking!

Day 2 complete at the Bushcraft holiday club!

Today was all about fire—and given the recent dry weather, it was the perfect opportunity to dive deep into real fire safety and respect.

We discussed the wider context of wildfires across the UK and Europe, why we must keep fires proportionate to our needs, and how to safely manage and extinguish them until the ash is completely cold. We also looked at the roles of different parts of a fire—using bright flames for light, and hot, steady embers for cooking our lunchtime campfire BBQ meatball pittas!

In between fire practice, a few of the group learned knife safety and the "blood bubble" rule before starting their whittling projects (including one very creative child attempting a lorry and trailer on his wood blank!).

Two of the group stepped up to lead a paracord workshop for the others, and we topped off the day with more den building, woodland games, and of course, campfire s'mores.

Another fantastic day in the woods. See you all tomorrow for navigation and rescue!

Day 1 complete at our Bushcraft holiday club.

Despite a chilly start to the morning, everyone warmed up quickly once we got moving into the woods.

The team started out learning some essential hitches—a timber hitch and a round turn with two half hitches—to pitch their tarps. From there, they took their shelters a step further by stacking fallen deadwood and branches around the base to build up some brilliant, cozy dens.

Of course, we had to test how waterproof they were with a "freak rainstorm" (me walking around with a watering can). The shelters held up really well—a few drops got through, but the kids were pleased with what they'd built.

Some of the group also had a go on the slackline, a few got stuck into weaving paracord bracelets to take home, and everyone fuelled up on campfire pizza pockets for lunch.

A brilliant start to the week. See you all tomorrow for campfires and fire-lighting!

What a day at Oswestry Show yesterday! A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by the stand for a chat, had a go with the firesteels, made a paracord bracelet, or toasted a s’more. As our very first show, we couldn't have asked for a better welcome. It was great to meet you all!

Something new is landing at Woodland Roots...

We’ve been working behind the scenes to add a brand-new activity to our lineup.

We’re keeping the exact details under wraps for just a moment while we get the site sorted, but we’re looking forward to sharing more soon.
