Ilkeston Running Club

Ilkeston Running Club A friendly club with runners of all abilities that meet at the Rutland Sports Park, Tues & Thurs 7pm The benefits of joining our club are many.

Ilkeston Running Club meets twice a week on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, at the reception of Rutland Sports Park, Ilkeston. The Rutland Sports Park has good parking facilities and a purpose built running track. Lockers and showers are free to use (£1 deposit) for club runners. We range in age from 18 to 70+ and have many different standards of runner. We cater for everyone, from the runner who

is looking for some extra motivation to continue training, to the more competitive runner who wants to test themselves at races. We have many women runners, some of who have been with the club for several years. All newcomers to the club are made to feel very welcome and we always make sure no runners are left alone and are grouped with other runners of a similar standard. Running with other people means that you will make many new friends and benefit from the security and wealth of experience that our members can provide. Club membership entitles you to free race entry to approximately 10 races a year, discounts at local running stores and of course the a chance to wear the famous white vest with the red stripe around it. Why not come along and try us out for a few weeks before committing to join? Contact us through Twitter or Facebook and we will ensure you are welcomed into the group on your first visit.

Yesterday evening saw us competing in race 3 of the Derby Runner Summer League at a new venue, Middleton Top excellently organized by Belper RC. These races are the epitome of club running with them being open to all members of the competing clubs and no entry fees. Whatever your ability there is always someone to race against.

Prior to the race our superb sponsors The Derby Runner (based in Spondon) gave out trophies and prizes for the 2025/26 Cross Country League and our Men’s team picked up the league winners trophy.

Sunday's racing this week was split between the Grimsby 10km road race and the (hopefully inaugural) Beauty & the Beast lapped trail event at Bestwood Country Park.

Grimsby saw 9 club members sporting their vests, with both Kev Pounder (new PB) and Sam Waddingham finishing sub 40 mins.

Meanwhile in Notts a much smaller fundraising event hosted by Hucknall Harriers saw 3 runners clocking up 16 x 5km laps between them. The course certainly was not flat, but the weather was kind and marshals very supportive.

Busy week ahead with a league race on Tuesday at Middleton Top, Pub Run near Jacksdale on Thursday, Hairy Helmets Relay on Friday and a "Run in the Peaks" on Sunday.

We start this week with a phenomenal achievement, Craig completed his 400th Parkrun at the relatively local Coronation Park, Swadlincote. That's a lot of miles and a fair amount of running shoes too. Very well done Craig.

Club Chair Paul was at Battlestead Croft Parkrun at Burton and Darren at South Manchester Parkrun.

Also getting their Saturday fixes were, Lewis, Tania, Rob, Kevin and Pete at Shipley and John Mc and Josh at Alvaston.

It was a Parkrun Saturday so Craig must be on the road again, this time he was battling to a great finish at Hastings. Tony was down at Seaton in Devon, Dave F was at Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire, Darren returned to the motherland at Hafan Pwllheli in Wales and Kev B was at Perton Playing Fields at Wolverhampton. Lewis, Julian and Tania made the short trek up to Poolsbrook for 3 laps of fun. Our postie Sue delivered a first in age group at Clumber Park, very well done Sue.

Meanwhile Lee was marshaling at Long Eaton. We encourage our members to help out at Parkruns whenever they can because as we all know our Saturday routine would not be possible without them.

Away from Parkrun Jack managed to squeeze in two successful fell races at the Bluebells Revenge in Derbyshire on Wednesday and at Kelsbrook, Lancashire on Saturday. Now we're approaching the height of Summer you'll find plenty of fell races organised each week in Derbyshire. They're very cheap to enter (for many you can pay on the day), ideal for all standards of runners and most importantly good fun, when you've finished!!

Wednesday evening took a hardy team of runners to a new course in Walesby Forest, for the 2nd race of the Notts AAA Summer League.
It was rather warm and a tad dusty, few of us expected to encounter sand! amongst the many other surfaces underfoot on the lapped course.
Great atmosphere at this well organised event.

We needed Google Maps this week to identify the venues for some of our IRC Parkrun tourists. Craig was at Millom in the Lake District for a novel 5 lap course, whilst Coach Alex was at Fell Foot Parkrun at Newby Bridge (also in the Lake District) and finally Ladies Captain Sonia kept it relatively local at Rother Valley and just missed a PB.

Other achievements included red hot Lewis who missed equalling a PB by 7 seconds at Long Eaton. Julian and Lee managed recent best times at Shipley Park and Victoria Embankment respectively.

And those summer races keep coming.....

Ryan B (after completing a speedy White Peak HM on Saturday 16th!) was running well alongside Kev P at Beeston ACs "Trent 5" on Wednesday, finishing in 33:46 and 31:38 respectively.

Meanwhile in Leicestershire....... Ray R was collecting more cash with his fastest 10km this year, 1st in age group again (Sinfin 5 mile - 35:02, Watermead 10 km - 43:37).

Back to league races next week with the AAA race at Walesby on Wednesday 27th

Lots going on with the Ilkeston Runners over the last week, from club sessions to individuals racing.

On Sunday 17th Natalie (2nd lady) and Josh led the 5 club runners home in the Sinfin 5 mile race, 33:25 and 33:03 respectively.

Tuesday 19th brought our monthly 5km handicap race. Rory was first back setting a new pb, followed swiftly by Richard H and Sam W. Welcome to both Stephanie and Stephen (first time out).

After a quieter bank holiday weekend, Carsington 7+ (part of the Run Derby race series) saw 6 members tackle the undulating and in some parts, windy 7.5 mile course around the reservoir. Congratulations to Lewis our first runner home.

Across the border in Leicestershire, Ray collected 1st in age group for the Bosworth Half Marathon in 01:37

And finally, over in the heart of the Lake District Corinna embraced the Fred Whitton Sportive, considered one of the UKs most revered and gruelling. Cycling 112 miles of punishing terrain in breathtaking scenery!

Only one winner this week in the Parkrun tourism race (it's probably a winner for many weeks to come!) and that's Laura who ran at Moussette in Quebec, Canada. A not nearly close second was Craig in Roundhay Park, Leeds who seemed to have got the worst of the weather.

Some notable achievements were PBs for Bridget and Liz H at Shipley and Black Rocks respectively, 3rd place for Craig at Leeds and winner, winner, chicken dinner for Andy at Leicester Victoria Park. Well done to them and all of Saturday's parkrunners.
