Ilkeston Running Club

A friendly club with runners of all abilities that meet at the Rutland Sports Park, Tues & Thurs 7pm The benefits of joining our club are many.

Ilkeston Running Club meets twice a week on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, at the reception of Rutland Sports Park, Ilkeston. The Rutland Sports Park has good parking facilities and a purpose built running track. Lockers and showers are free to use (£1 deposit) for club runners. We range in age from 18 to 70+ and have many different standards of runner. We cater for everyone, from the runner who

is looking for some extra motivation to continue training, to the more competitive runner who wants to test themselves at races. We have many women runners, some of who have been with the club for several years. All newcomers to the club are made to feel very welcome and we always make sure no runners are left alone and are grouped with other runners of a similar standard. Running with other people means that you will make many new friends and benefit from the security and wealth of experience that our members can provide. Club membership entitles you to free race entry to approximately 10 races a year, discounts at local running stores and of course the a chance to wear the famous white vest with the red stripe around it. The weekend Parkrun action saw Gregory, Barnaby and dad James battling for family rivalry in Preston. Darran, who is becoming a regular tourist, was at Cannock Chase. Andy, who presumably couldn't get a ticket to watch Forest at Liverpool, went to Millhouses in Sheffield and finally, Simon was down at Henley on Thames 'oar' was he!

Last Tuesday we had a track session under the expert eye of Coach Ian with all abilities represented. As we move into Autumn and the racing schedule becomes less onerous we'll move to two track sessions a month until next March. Why not come along and try us out.

Saturday's parkrun action saw Kev at Waverley Lakes in Rotherham with Darran just up the road at Hillsborough in Sheffield, the Read clan were down in Guilford, Dave M at Exmouth and, of course, Craig on his travels again this time bagging his Parkrun Z at Zuiderpark in Holland. Locally, there were plenty of IRC supporting our local event at Shipley Park and Lee was enjoying the big ups and downs of Bestwood Park.

Last Tuesday saw the final Derby Runner Summer League race of the season at Cromford excellently organised by our good friends at Matlock AC. League races throw up some quirky courses and this one is right up there. A mile and half run a long the canal before a long busting mile climb to Black Rocks before turning round and coming back. For many running downhill is just as demanding as going up and then a finish where you see those ahead of you completing whilst you still have half a mile to go! Can't wait to do it again next year!!

On Thursday Richard led a group out to the Hemlockstone (hill not pub!) for a social run. It's great to make the most of the summer evenings to venture further afield.

The Saturday Parkrun quest took us to nearly all 4 corners of Europe. Tania was in Salento (southern Italy is the most precise we can be), Craig dragged the kids off on another jaunt this time to Georgengarten in Hannover, Germany. At the other end of the continent Dave F was up at Holyrood, Edinburgh and Chairman Paul went west to Haverfordwest in Wales. Also on her travels was Nat B at Penrose in Cornwall. More local it's great to see Sam O strutting his stuff again at Ashbourne.

Last Thursday saw some interval training down on the canal with length of reps and paces being adjusted to abilities.

Tonight sees the final Derby Runner Summer League race of the season (say it can't be so!) at Cromford. Report to follow.

Most of the IRC Parkrun activity on Saturday was kept local with runners at Victoria Embankment, Alvaston, Shipley Park, Markeaton Park and Long Eaton. Those being more adventurous were Ian and Sarah at Queenswood Country Park, Leominster, Josh at Melksham in the West Country and Andy at Rugby.

On Tuesday it was training on the track at the Rutland Rec. A healthy turnout were put through their paces by Andy with 400m reps of increasing intensity.

Remember in this warm weather all of your runs will feel much harder so just dial the effort back a notch, you'll still get the same workout without ruining your other training.

Friday was our annual Awards Evening which this year took the form of a BBQ. Plenty of awards were presented, a lot of burgers and sausages consumed and maybe a few beers quaffed too. Despite this there were notable efforts by Andy, John Mc, and Lewis at Chasewater (West Midlands), Beacon Hill Country Park and Markeaton Parkruns respectively. Maybe this running diet lark is overthought!

Craig was close to home this week, this time at Brackenhurst Campus inaugural Parkrun at Southwell. Sue was at Blickling in Norfolk and Tony at York Community Woodland.

Ilkeston runners were out in force on Sunday 28th June, for the popular "Ramathon" Half Marathon in Derby, part of the "Run Derby Race Series" hosted by "Run For All".

It's fair to say they endured a wide range of weather, from brilliant sunshine, to complete downpour and wind, which undoubtedly made it even tougher.
However, 6 runners finished sub 90mins, with Jack and Lewis in the top 10 - Well done Lads.

Special mention to Nicola who paused her run to seek first aid for another runner.

The heat relented a little on Saturday just in time for one of the Club's Parkrun awaydays. On this occasion it was a trip to Market Bosworth in Leicestershire for the Parkrun followed by a runners favourite breakfast namely a fry up: though remember folks, everything in moderation.

On Tuesday it was our June 5k Handicap and after no rain for a quite a while it duly started at the 7pm off time, however with the still elevated temperatures it was most welcome.

Do you want to improve your running or just make it more enjoyable and meet new people? Then come and join Ilkeston Running Club. You don’t have to be a budding Josh Kerr or Keely Hodgkinson (Steve Ovett or Paula Radcliffe in old money), if you can run a 5k in at least 30 minutes then you’ll be right at home.

For a Type A member the annual cost is £43, for which you get:
• A weekly social run on a Tuesday with 3 different paced groups
• 18 track sessions a year at the Rutland
• A monthly 5k handicap race
• Faster workouts on Thursday open to all
• Free entry to the 10 Summer League races and 5 Winter Cross Country races that we enter as a club
• 4 x club trips a year to Parkruns a little further a field where we’ll have breakfast after running
• A trip to a European half-marathon.

With Summer now firmly here, IRC members are making sure they keep their Parkrun routine going even on their hols. Heather was at Heartlands in Redruth and Mark was also in Cornwall at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Meanwhile Sue was at the very picturesque looking Delamere Forest in Cheshire.

Closer to home we had a gang burning up the tarmac at Nottingham's Embankment Parkrun, where Tania got a PB and Julian continues to rediscover his form with his best time for many a year. Team competitiveness is always a driving factor and Andy and John Mc had a right battle at Alvaston with Ryan not too far behind.

This Saturday we will be having one of our away day Parkruns with the venue being Market Bosworth Country Park, news and pics next week.

So whilst a lot of the country were geared up to watch England in their World C.up match a good number of Ilkeston Runners were running in the 3rd league race of the Notts AAA Summer League.
Wollaton Park, what a beautiful setting! 5 miles over mixed terrain after the mass start, which always takes a few by surprise. Great to see a few more faces, including those supporting round the course.

Our next league races will be on Tuesday 7th July at Carsington and
Wednesday 15th July at Worksop, but before then we have a coach-led track session this Tuesday (23rd) at 7pm and a Summer 5km Handicap on Tuesday 30th
