The Skywalk. Par 3, 198 yards.

The tee is a horseshoe of laminated glass bolted out from the canyon rim on steel ribs, hanging over nothing. There is a strip of mown turf down the middle to hit from, and on both sides of your stance the canyon floor is twelve hundred feet straight down, visible through the floor, with the river a thin green thread at the bottom of it. The green is on top of a butte out in the middle of the canyon, one bunker short left, sheer rock on every side, so there is no front edge to run one up and nowhere to bail out. What makes it hard has almost nothing to do with 198 yards. Your balance takes its cues from what is underneath you, and when it reports a void your body shortens the swing and speeds it up without asking. That is why people come up short on holes like this far more often than they go long. Take the club the number calls for, put your eyes on the flag instead of the floor, and make the same swing you would make off a mat at the range. The glass is rated for it. You are the only variable.

192 yards along the top of a cliff, and nobody who stands on this tee is thinking about the shot.

The hole is straightforward. A long iron along the headland to a green on a grassy promontory, one bunker, mown grass running out to where the ground stops. What makes it absurd is happening underneath you. When the swell arrives, a single wall of dark green water rears up out of the bay and stands two thirds of the way up a cliff that is already high enough to make you careful near the edge.

There is a stone fort with a lighthouse out on the point. The wave behind it makes it look like something off a model railway. That is how you know what you are looking at.

The wind here is offshore and it holds the wave up, tearing long white plumes backwards off the crest before it breaks, and the water in front is already white from the one before.

Take one more club than the number, because the wind holding those waves up is in your face, and aim at the middle. Nothing about this hole rewards ambition.

Nazare, hole 16. Par 3, 192 yards.

The Elfego Baca Shootout, Socorro Peak, New Mexico. One hole, 5,280 yards, 2,550 feet down.

This one is real, and you can go and look it up. The tee is a wooden crate bolted to the summit of Socorro Peak, 7,243 feet up, and the hole is three miles away and 2,550 feet below you on the desert floor. There is no fairway. There is no green. The target is a circle of yellow chalk about fifty feet across scuffed into the dirt beside a car park, with a flag stuck in the middle of it, and everything between you and it is cactus, scree, rattlesnakes, dry watercourses and old mine shafts. They have played it every year since 1960 and it is named after Elfego Baca, a nineteen year old who held off an armed mob for thirty three hours in 1884 and walked out without a scratch, which tells you the sort of stubbornness the thing was designed to reward. You get ten balls and three spotters, and you have to finish with at least one ball still alive. After the tee shot there is no tee, so you carry a square of carpet and play every shot off it. At that altitude a driver carries over 600 yards, which sounds like a gift until you watch one disappear into a thorn bush you will never find. Most people take between 18 and 21. The record is 9.

110 yards, and there is a hole in the ground between you and the green that fires seawater a hundred feet into the air.

The shot is nothing. A smooth wedge to a green on a raised platform of dark rock. What makes it is the blowhole punched clean through the shelf directly on your line, breathing every time a swell drives into the rock underneath it. Time it wrong and you are hitting through a wall of spray with no idea where the ball went. Time it right and it is the easiest shot on the card.

Nothing else here is subtle either. The whole shelf is wet scoured rock, the sea breaks white against its outer edge and washes across it in sheets, and the green sits above all of it with one bunker and grass to the lip. There is no bail out, because everything that is not green is either bare rock or the Atlantic.

Wait for the blowhole to breathe, hit it while the spray is falling, and take enough club that a bit of wet air does not cost you the green.

The Blowhole, hole 5. Par 3, 110 yards.

141 yards, and the hole underneath the green is the one everybody looks at.

You’re playing across open water to the flat top of a sea arch, and you can see straight through the opening beneath it to the horizon on the other side. That gap is why the hole works. It tells you exactly how far down the sea is without anybody having to say it, and it turns a comfortable short iron into a shot most golfers would rather not have.

The green is up there on its own. One bunker, mown grass to the lip, and nothing else. Every side is a drop, so there’s no apron, no bank, no bail out and nothing to catch a poor strike. The causeway from the near cliff is the only way on and off, so the walk after a bad one is long and public.

Take the club that gets you comfortably past the front edge, not the one that just about reaches on your best strike. Aim at the middle and forget the flag. The wind off the sea decides this hole, and it’s rarely helping.

The Keyhole, hole 11. Par 3, 141 yards.

02/09/2026

199 yards, and the canyon has done everything it possibly can to help you.

Look at where you’re standing. Sheer rock on both sides, close enough that anything into it kicks back down onto the grass. You cannot lose this tee shot left and you cannot lose it right. The walls take the wind out of it as well, so there is nothing pushing the ball anywhere it doesn’t want to go. Bowling with the guide rails up.

Then the rails run out, and the pins are on an island.

Every excuse has been taken off you before you swing, and what is left is 199 yards of pure carry to a green with water on every side of it and a footbridge as the only way on. There is no front edge to run one up, no bail-out short, nothing to aim away at. You carry it or you reload.

So take enough club. The commonest way to make six here is taking the number that needs your best strike and then trying to help the ball into the air. Take one more than you think, make an ordinary swing, and aim at the middle of the green rather than the flag.

The Ribbon, hole 13. Par 3, 199 yards.

01/09/2026

215 yards, and the shot everyone plays is the one that kills them.

It’s steeply downhill, so it plays more like 190. Hit the club for 190. The problem is that standing on that tee looking into the gorge, 190 feels like far too much, and you reach for something shorter. That is exactly how you come up short, and short is the one place on this hole you cannot be.

The apron in front of the green is a strip of mown grass about fifteen paces wide, and past it the ground goes over the lip and drops a few hundred feet to the river. Short doesn’t leave you a chip. Short leaves you nothing.

Long is the safe miss, and almost nobody takes it. There’s a mown bank rising behind the green into the jungle, and a ball into that bank stops and sits up. From there you are chipping back downhill to a flag you can see, which is an ordinary golf shot on a hole that doesn’t look like it has one.

Two bunkers, short left and front right, and both are better than what lies underneath them. Take the sand. Take the bank. Take anything except the front edge.

Play the 190, aim at the middle, and let it finish long.

The Lost Serpent, hole 4. Par 3, 215 yards.

31/08/2026

127 yards, and nowhere to miss it.

Deep bunkers are cut into the mounding on both sides, with lips steep enough that you will be coming out sideways rather than at the flag. Behind the green a dark hollow runs the full width of it, at the foot of a huge bank of rough, shaggy grass.

That bank is not a backstop. Nothing pitching into it comes back to you. It hangs up in the rough or trickles down into the hollow, and from there you are playing back up to a green running away from you that you cannot stop.

Which leaves short, and short is the answer. Trouble long, trouble both sides, so the front of the green is the only place a mediocre shot survives. Play the yardage to the front half and let it release.

The mistake is looking at a wedge in your hand and deciding to attack a flag with sand either side and a hollow behind.

The Anvil, hole 15. Par 3, 127 yards.

29/08/2026

178 yards, and nowhere to miss it.

A green like this makes you steer. You grip tighter, you ease off through impact, and a steered iron leaks right almost every time.

The fix is a smaller target, not a bigger one. Pick a specific point on the green rather than aiming at “the green”, and make a normal committed swing at it. A committed shot at the middle finishes closer than a careful one at the flag.

Then take one more club than the number says. It is into the breeze off the sea, and short is wet.

The Stack, hole 17. Par 3, 178 yards.

28/08/2026

240 yards of open water, and that only gets you to the fairway.

There is no club decision on this tee. It is driver, and it has to be a good one. So the only thing left to work with is launch.

Tee it higher than you normally would, put the ball forward off your left heel, and let your upper body lean away from the target so your trailing shoulder sits lower. That sets you up to catch it on the way up, and hitting up on a driver buys you carry that swinging harder never will. Same speed, higher launch, less spin, more yards in the air.

Swinging harder does the opposite. You steepen, you catch it coming down, the spin climbs and the ball balloons and drops. Into a breeze off the sea that is exactly how you finish ten yards short of dry land.

The Bight, hole 13. Par 4, 452 yards, 240 to carry.
