Thrill Drill Thursday - Activation - Glutes

Your glutes might be working less than you think and sometimes it’s not about doing more.

It’s about learning to switch on the muscles that should already be supporting you.

Try this simple little drill: place a brick between your ankle and inner thigh, bend the knee and gently move the leg forwards and backwards.

Keep the movement slow and controlled.
Notice where you feel it.
Then try the other side.

That’s your glute waking up and learning to work.

These are the small drills that can make a big difference to how you move, balance and feel in your practice.

Save this one and give it a try next time you’re on your mat.

And if you love discovering simple yoga drills that make your body feel stronger, more mobile and more connected… follow along.

Thrill Drill Thursday Dragonfly arm lifts

Do you need superhuman strength to master an arm balance? The answer is no.

The Dragonfly Lift is all about learning to shift your weight, engage your core and engaging your quads — while building serious strength through your arms, shoulders and hips.

Try this drill by starting low and controlled.
Lean the bkdy weight forwards, engage your core.
Lift one foot… then the other. Even if you only hover for a second — that counts.

Don’t chase the perfect pose. Chase the progress.

Save this drill to practise later. Tag someone who loves a challenge. Follow for more yoga drills, strength and mobility exercises and progressions to help you move stronger.

Thrill drill Thursday Archer pushup

Your push up isn't broken. Your shoulder blades just never learned how to move.

Most people grind through push ups thinking it's an arm exercise — chest, triceps, done. But the real strength lives in Archer pushup: the connection between your shoulder blade and your ribcage. Lose that anchor and every push up leaks power before it even reaches your arms.

Archer Push Ups fix this by isolating the one movement most people skip entirely — the protraction and retraction of the shoulder blades, done slow, done controlled, done with total awareness of where your shoulders sit on your ribs.

In a regular push up, both arms share the load and your weaker side can quietly hide behind your stronger one. Archer push ups remove that hiding place — hands wide, weight shifting fully into one arm as the other straightens out to the side, forcing each shoulder, each side of your chest, each side of your core to work independently.

That's exactly why this drill builds real strength and real mobility at the same time. Strength, because each arm has to control your full bodyweight alone. Mobility, because the wide hand position and side-to-side shift ask your shoulders to move through range they rarely see.

Master this and your regular push ups, your chaturangas, your plank holds all get more stable — because you've trained each side to hold its own.

Thrill drill Thursday High lunge Lizard airplane arms

Your hips are asymmetrical by design. One side opens differently to the other, every single day depending on how you slept, sat, or trained.

Lizard with airplane arms isn't just a hip opener — it's a test of how much you can open the hip flexor and rotate through the thoracic spine at the same time, without losing the stability underneath you. That combination is rare in most hip work, which usually asks you to choose between depth and control.

Step your right foot outside your right hand, lower onto the back knee if you need to, and let the front hip sink forward and down. Notice the stretch along the front of the back hip and deep in the right groin. Now reach both arms out wide like wings — airplane arms.

Feel the difference between the stretch in your hip and the stretch through your ribs and shoulder. They're not the same sensation, and learning to tell them apart is half the point of this drill.

From lizard, plant both hands and lift the back knee to rise into high lunge.Keep the front knee tracking over the ankle, not drifting past the toes
Square the hips forward as you rise, letting the rotation you built in airplane arms

Save this one for your next hip-opening flow, and let me know in the comments which side felt tighter today.

Thrill drill Thursday Threading

You crack your hip when you stand up and just call it normal now.

It's not. That's your hip joint telling you it's been stuck in the same narrow range of motion for too long — sitting, walking, sitting again. No real rotation, no real opening, ever.

Thread the Needle is one of the few poses that actually reaches the deep rotators most stretches miss.

Threading the arm and dropping the shoulder targets the muscles between your shoulder blades that carry your desk-day tension

The hip opener stacked on top works your external rotators, the muscles responsible for that stuck, clicky feeling

Do this one slow. Let your hip sink instead of forcing it. Feel for the spot that resists you the most — that's not a wall, that's just tissue that hasn't been asked to move in a while.

Five breaths a side. Notice your hip feels looser the next time you stand up. Notice your shoulders drop half an inch you didn't know they were holding.

That's your body remembering it's allowed to move like this.

Save this one for tomorrow's practice, and drop a comment if your hips have been talking to you lately.

Thrill Drill Thursday shoulder Strengthening

Your shoulders are carrying more than you realise.

When was the last time you stretched your shoulders — not your "I-slept-wrong" stretch, but a real, deep release? If you spend your day at a desk, lifting kids, carrying groceries, or just clenching your jaw through a stressful meeting, your shoulders are quietly storing every bit of that tension. Most of us don't even notice it until it shows up as a headache, a stiff neck, or that nagging ache between your shoulder blades.

Now imagine this: forearms grounded, hips lifting high, your shoulders finally doing the strengthening work instead of just the bracing work

That's Dolphin Pose. It looks humble, but it builds real strength in your shoulders and upper back while gently stretching your hamstrings and calves.

The first time you hold it, you'll feel a shake — that's your body waking muscles up that have been asleep for years. And when you release? That exhale. That's the moment so many of our students say, "Oh — this is why people do yoga."

You don't need to be flexible. You don't need fancy leggings. You don't need to have done yoga before. You just need a mat and 60 seconds to try Dolphin Pose.

Thrill Drill Thursday Table top hip swing allows you to open up the hip and flow

Your hip is a ball-and-socket joint built for movement in every direction — yet most of our days only ask it to move forward and back. Sitting, walking, sitting again. This drill is a reminder that your body knows more directions than that.

Come to all fours. Ground down through both hands, find length through your spine. Lift one knee off the mat and swing. Feel the outer hip and glute wake up.

Then sweep it back behind you, hip height again — feel the stretch travel through the front of the hip and into the core as you stabilise. Notice the moment of control between the two directions. That's where the work is happening.

Tag someone who needs to feel their hips open today.

Thrill drill Thursday Hip, chair, sit, hip stand leg

This flow is one of my favorites for unlocking tight hips — especially if you sit all day or your hips feel locked up in lunges and squats. It also challenges the balance.

Notice what's happened. You moved from fire to flight. From compression to expansion. From gripping to opening. The whole sequence is a conversation between effort and grace — and your body knows exactly how to speak it.

This is what yoga does. It doesn't just stretch your body. It teaches you to stay present when things get hard, then find the beauty on the other side of it.

Try this drill today — one leg chair flowing into standing side leg extension. Go slow. Breathe through the burn. Share your experience in the comments.

Thrill drill Thursday Lunge medley

There's a moment in practice when strength meets surrender — when the grounding power of a lunge dissolves into the openness of a backbend. This drill lives in that moment.

What makes this powerful isn't the shapes themselves — it's the transition. The way you move from stability into vulnerability and back again. The lunge grounds you. The backbend asks you to trust. Together, they teach you something words can't quite capture.

This isn't about perfection. It's about feeling the contrast — the difference between rooting down and rising up, between holding on and letting go.

Try it tomorrow. Five rounds each side. Notice what shifts.

Drop a line in the comments and tell me what came up for you .

Thrill drill Thursday Hippy Dippy...
..that tightness you feel after a long day sitting?

That deep ache in your hips when you go for a run? That's your outer glutes crying out for attention — and they deserve it.

Your gluteus medius and minimus — the muscles wrapping around the sides of your hips — are the unsung heroes of every step you take. But modern life compresses them constantly. Tight hips aren't just uncomfortable; they're a root cause of lower back pain, knee issues, and reduced performance.

This two-part drill works smarter, not harder.

The low lunge warms and mobilises your hip joint dynamically. Then pigeon pose sinks into a deep, therapeutic stretch of the piriformis and the entire outer glute complex.
