A true Speed Derby legend.

Silver Lift, the remarkable partner of Harriet Biddick and the only horse to win the British Speed Derby three times, retires at the age of 21.

Together, Harriet and Silver Lift thrilled Hickstead crowds with their incredible speed, bravery and consistency, writing their names into the history books with victories in 2018, 2021 and 2022... not to mention several runner-up placings.

As Silver Lift enjoys a well-deserved retirement, we're looking back at one of those unforgettable moments; their winning round in the 2022 Speed Derby

Thank you, Silver Lift, for the memories, the excitement, and your outstanding contribution to one of showjumping's most iconic classes.

William Whitaker and Flamboyant III are among the likely favourites for this year’s Al Shira’aa Derby.

The combination has finished runner-up in Hickstead’s showcase for two years running, and now William hopes to go one better in this year’s competition.

Ellen Whitaker and her uncle John Whitaker faced each other in a memorable jump-off at the Hickstead Derby in 2004. Ellen, at 18 years old, was making her debut in the prestigious event, riding her stallion Locarno 62. She delivered a clear round, setting a high standard.

John, competing on Buddy Bunn, a horse he had ridden only once before, also achieved a clear round, forcing a jump-off between the two. Buddy Bunn had originally been entered under William Funnell, but an injury prevented Funnell from competing, prompting John to step in at the last minute.

In the jump-off, Ellen went first and had a rail down at the Derby Rails, finishing with four faults. John followed with a flawless clear round, securing his fourth Derby victory with a horse he didn’t know.

Despite the loss, Ellen expressed pride in her performance and admiration for her uncle, stating, "If I had to get beaten, there's no one I'd rather it be by than Uncle John."

We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Bob Ellis, the renowned course designer and cherished friend of the Bunn family, who has died at the age of 79 following a short illness.
Bob enjoyed a longstanding association with Hickstead. He first came to the showground as a rider in 1969 and was later a member of the winning team at the inaugural Team Chase held here in 1972. One of his proudest moments was watching Joe Turi and Vital win the Hickstead Derby in 1990, as Bob had originally bought, backed and produced the stallion when he was a young horse.
Bob began course building in the outer rings in the 1990s, under the mentorship of Jon Doney, and by 1993 he had stopped riding to concentrate on his course building career. Later he became the Senior International Course Designer in the International Arena, where he worked with Kelvin Bywater for many years. He was one of a select group within the sport to hold the FEI’s O status, enabling him to design courses at some of the world’s major competitions. The crowning achievement of his career came at the London Olympics, where he created a series of iconic courses featuring unforgettable fence designs that showcased the very best of Great Britain to a global audience.
Bob will be remembered not only for his outstanding contribution to the sport, but also for his ready smile, infectious sense of humour, and lifelong passion for Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family and friends.
