Parachute Bags – Louise Bowes

“I’ve been using Parachute Bags on my rigs for a good 10 years now, after a very good friend showed me them.

They’re brilliant for close-range fishing, especially when you’re fishing within catapult range, as they give you a great visual marker. As the bag dissolves, the foam nuggets rise to the surface, making it really easy to bait accurately.

I also find them really useful on w**dy venues or spots that are littered with debris and they work particularly after heavy leaf fall during the autumn months. I know that the little bag is going to hold my hook and hook bait up the length of the hook link, and if I’ve balanced my hook bait correctly, I know the rig is going to settle perfectly. Most importantly, I know the hook point won’t be masked.

I’ve found that one and a half nuggets will comfortably hold up a size 5 Covert Dark Chod hook.

For me, Parachute Bags work incredibly well with Hinge Stiff Rigs and balanced bait presentations. They’re very simple, but something I have an awful lot of confidence in.”

Our PRO-PELA II 18mm LO-LOADA is a lightweight and durable carbon throwing stick, which has a low loading port at the top of the handle for extra fast and convenient loading of bait.

Multiple boilies can be loaded at a time, making the process more efficient and allowing for a steady rhythm to bait application. Being lightweight it means the stick can be used for longer and the bait can be launched further with consistency and without the arm ache!

The stick will take boilies of 18-20mm through the lower loading port and boilies of 18-22mm can be fed into the top hole. Supplied with a durable padded case for protection and longevity.

Dave Lane – My Bottom Bait Rig

“When I’m fishing bottom baits, I like to use a fluorocarbon hook link. I think it lends itself really well to a big, heavy bottom bait, and for me, they just present better.

It’s basically an old-fashioned hair rig with an 18mm bottom bait. I prefer fluorocarbon over monofilament because of the semi-stiffness. I feel it makes it harder for the carp to eject the rig, and I use it straight through to the hair as well, which I think helps with the hooking arrangement.

It’s caught me a lot of fish over the years, and I particularly like using it with bottom baits and in silt. I tend to fish it nice and long, around 10–12 inches.”

Sometimes keeping things simple is all you need.

Dave Lane – Right hook for the right situation.

“For the vast majority of my fishing, I like to use a Mugga, which is a fantastic hook pattern.

However, when I’m fishing a venue like the one I’m on today — shallow, with lots of stone, gravel and flint — and I want to use a bottom bait, I much prefer a hook with an in-turned point.

In my opinion, an in-turned point doesn’t get damaged as easily compared to a straight point like a Mugga. That’s one of the main reasons I’ve swapped over to the Covert Dark Wide Gape Talon Tip hooks.

They’re sharp straight out of the packet and, at the moment, they’re my go-to hook pattern on Welly.”
