πŸ† Member of the Month πŸ†
πŸ… Sue Currie πŸ… (swipe to see the moment we surprised her with this well deserved award!)

Sue is a rowing Queen turned Weight Lifting Machine who has won the Member of the Month title πŸ‘‘ and a delicious prize - One of the famous Family Pie’s from Fox & Co. Caterers Edinburgh's West End πŸ₯§ πŸ’ͺ🏼

Sue joined Gym on the Square in February 2025 with the goal of improving her bone health following an osteoporosis diagnosis.

Research confirms that weight-bearing exercise and strength training helps stimulate bone growth, maintain bone density and build the muscle strength needed to support and protect our bones as we age. 🦴πŸ’ͺ🏼

With a background in rowing, Sue was no stranger to physical activity, but strength training in a gym environment was completely new to her.

Since joining, she has embraced the challenge, learning new movements, building confidence and developing excellent technique along the way. πŸ‹πŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ”₯

Sue attends

- Small Group PT sessions 2x per week
- Our weekly Stretch for Success session
- Our monthly community event / social

She is a brilliant example of what we’re building here at Gym on the Square.

A community of supportive, like-minded people who want to get stronger, move better and enjoy the process together. πŸ™ŒπŸΌ

Sue’s consistency, positive attitude and willingness to step outside her comfort zone have been fantastic to see.

Well done, Sue. This recognition is thoroughly deserved. Keep being amazing! πŸ’ͺ🏼πŸ”₯πŸ‹πŸ½β€β™€οΈ

Barbell Back Squat - What? Why? How? πŸ‹πŸΏπŸ‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

Most people who join Gym on the Square have never done exercises like this before. Gyms can be off putting and intimidating to many people.

But we know from research that weight-bearing exercise is important for all of us to maintain muscle, build strength and support bone health - particularly important as we age.

This type of exercise might look intimidating at first, but it’s a movement pattern we use every day.

Sitting down, standing up, getting up from the floor and lifting things from low down.

The barbell back squat strengthens your legs, glutes and core, while also improving balance, coordination and mobility. It’s one of the reasons strength training can have such a positive impact on how we move and feel, both now and in the years ahead.

What helps take away the anxiety around these lifts is having someone there to guide you through it.

Our Coaches break these movements down step by step, check your setup, help you build confidence and progress at a pace that feels right for you.

We’re here to help you gradually build strength that carries over into everyday life. πŸ’ͺ🏻

If you live or work in Edinburgh city centre and would like support getting started with strength training, we’d love to help.

Small Group Personal Training at Gym on the Square combines expert coaching, accountability and a community of like-minded people, all working towards becoming stronger, healthier versions of themselves and making exercise an enjoyable and integrated part of life. ❀️

So many amazing causes benefit from events like this, including our two charity partners, and πŸ’œπŸ§‘

Both charities mean a lot to us and our members who have directly or indirectly benefited from the support they provide.

Over the last few years we’ve been proud to support fundraising and awareness efforts in different ways.

For Maggies , we love our ongoing collaborations with with community running events throughout the year.

And we also help lots of Maggies runners integrate strength training into their routine with Small Group PT sessions aimed at improving running performance and reducing injury risk ahead of challenges like EMF.

And Alzheimer Scotland πŸ’œ -

We as a team remain committed to shining a light on the importance of movement and connection for brain health, dementia prevention and to help people live well post diagnosis πŸ’œ

Most people in Edinburgh pay for gyms they don’t use.

And even those who do go often struggle to stick to a consistent routine or get the most out of it.

Why?

Because most people don’t know what to do, or how to do it properly.

You walk in, see rows of big equipment, feel a bit intimidated, stick to the same safe machines, then eventually tell yourself:

β€œGyms are not for me.”

We’ve changed that for everyday people in Edinburgh City Centre.

At Gym on the Square, our Small Group Personal Training sessions take place in a private, boutique strength training studio in , with expert coaching and a welcoming community.

We’re proud to welcome a wide mix of ages, abilities and experience levels.

Helping people learn how to strength train, build confidence, stay consistent and actually enjoy the process.
