“If it wasn’t for strength training, I wouldn’t be able to take on challenges like this.” 💪🏼
Micheala Noonan

2 weeks ago today, GOTS team members Micheala Noonan & Kim Noonan joined long-term GOTS Member Becky Murray and Team SWURF | Work from better places for the Business Beats Cancer Edinburgh BBCE 💙🩷🩵 7 Hills Challenge, carrying an additional 10kg in military body armour along the way. ⛰️

For Micheala, physical challenge is a big part of life.

She joined the Army at 16, is a Combat Medic, a qualified British Triathlon Coach, holds a black belt in Karate( representing England Junior Squad) and has competed in endurance events from 5Ks right through to her most recent challenge - Ironman in Jacksonville, Florida.

Now, most of us everyday folks probably aren’t training for Ironman or walking Edinburgh’s 7 Hills wearing 10kg of body armour.. 😅

But we ALL have things we want our bodies to keep allowing us to do.

Our members and team have all sorts of hobbies and adventures outside the gym, including running, tennis, padel, netball, hiking, travelling and plenty more.

Their commitment to strength training with us 1 to 3 times per week in Small Group PT sessions helps support them in doing those things.

Strength training isn’t just about what you can lift in the gym.

It’s about building a body and mind strong enough to keep doing the things you love for years to come. 💪🏼

MEMBER OF THE MONTH 🏅 Gary Salmond-Wallace
(Or Member of the last 2 months, more like! 🤴😂)

Gary may be sick of seeing his photo on the gym TV screen, but we all still love it! It’s a very well-deserved extended celebration of his commitment to his health and strength. 💪🏼🏋️

Gary has been a valued member of the GOTS community for over 2 years now and by continuing to show up consistently each week to Small Group PT sessions he has built some impressive strength across his big lifts -

💪🏼 90kg deadlift
💪🏼 80kg squat
💪🏼 70kg bench press

But it’s not all about the numbers.

Gary enjoys a full life outside the gym while consistently making his health a priority.

He is a brilliant example of how you don’t have to choose between looking after yourself and enjoying dinners out, holidays and time with the people you love.

Training shouldn’t take over your life. It should help you live more of it. That’s what integrating fitness into your lifestyle is all about!

Well done, Gary! Keep up the brilliant work. Here’s to many more years of feeling strong, fit and healthy to enjoy everything life has to offer! ❤️💪🏼🏋️

If running is your thing, strength training deserves a place in your week too! 🏋️‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Not because we want you to swap your runs for lifting weights but Strength training can help you build a stronger, more resilient body to support the thing you already love doing.

Think stronger legs for the hills (plenty of those in Edinburgh) ⛰️

More strength and stability around hips, knees and ankles. 🦿

A body better prepared to tolerate the repetitive demands of running. 💪🏼

And strength that boosts your performance and supports you beyond your next PB too ( can tell you all about this!)

At Gym on the Square, our Small Group PT sessions have just 2–4 people per Coach, so we can show you what to do, how to do it properly, and adapt your training around your running, experience and any niggles you might have.

If you are based in - Book your trial PT session via website and let us help you build a body that can keep moving, running and hitting PBs for years to come!

“How can Personal Training work in a small group when everyone is different?”

Max 4 people to 1 Coach - Different ages. Different experience levels. Different abilities. Different goals.

But plenty in common too - most live in and have a a shared desire to get stronger, feel fitter, move better and make training an enjoyable, consistent part of life.

That’s where the Coaching comes in.

Before our Small Group PT sessions even begin, our Coaches look ahead at exactly who is booked in.

They’ll consider

- experience and strength levels

- which members may work well together around similar weight ranges

- whether someone is catching up on a previous session,

- how the session can be organised so everyone gets the Coaching and attention they need.

- Which members have things in common and would gel well together (all have a love for travel, business and quality experiences so there’s always great chat and stories in the gym!)

We also deliberately make sure members experience different Coaches across the team, rather than becoming reliant on just one person.

So while 2–4 members may be training alongside each other, they’re not necessarily doing exactly the same thing, at the same weight, in exactly the same way.

That’s the difference between a group exercise class and Small Group Personal Training.

And it’s also part of the difference between simply having a PT in the room and having a Gym on the Square Coach.

They don’t just rock up and see who’s there.

A lot of thought, care and planning happens before you ever walk through the door.

We are very proud of the team behind it all and our members who show up for themselves 1-3 times every week! 🏋️‍♂️🏋🏻‍♂️🏋️‍♀️🏋🏽‍♀️

We don’t run classes at Gym on the Square.

We offer Small Group Personal Training in our private strength studio in Edinburgh City Centre , with a maximum of 4 members to 1 Coach.

Different ages. Different experience levels. Different abilities. Different goals.

But with plenty in common too - a shared desire to build strength and fitness in a space that feels welcoming, inclusive and supportive.

It’s our Coaching Team’s job to make sure every member gets what they need from their session, while still benefiting from the buzz, energy and atmosphere that comes from training alongside a small group of like-minded people.

If you live or work in or nearby like most of our members - we’d love to invite you in to try a session! Book a trial via our website!

“I’m quite happy to go to the gym a couple of times per week and that’s a big win for me!” ❤️

Moving from France 🇫🇷 to Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 , Anais joined GOTS in May 2024 looking to get stronger, feel more confident around weights and meet new people along the way.

She achieved all of the above AND more than two years later, she STILL consistently shows up for herself twice per week in Small Group PT sessions and enjoys our regular community events and socials!

That’s the difference between exercise feeling like a tedious chore and becoming an enjoyable, integrated part of your life.

Anais is stronger, more confident, no longer intimidated by the gym and a much-loved part of our community.

We’re so glad Gym on the Square has become such a big part of Anais’ life in Edinburgh, and we’re looking forward to many more years of strength, fitness, friendships and socials together! ❤️

Sometimes the gym IS for you - you just haven’t found one you click with yet.

On t’aime, Anais! 🇫🇷🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💪🏼

Who’s in our Small Group PT gym community? 👋🏼

One of the things we love most about Gym on the Square is the great mix of members who train here in Edinburgh's West End

Different ages. Different experience levels. Different abilities. Different goals. Different backgrounds - some have lived in Edinburgh their whole lives, others have made the city home after moving here from different parts of the world.

But there’s plenty in common.

A shared desire to get stronger, feel fitter, move better and make strength training an enjoyable, consistent part of life - something many had struggled to do before finding us.

And there’s plenty to talk about beyond training too. Travel, food, Edinburgh life, work, family and everything in between.

Lots of stories shared between sets, conversations turn into friendships, and over time people who once walked through the door not knowing anyone become a real part of the community.

That’s one of the benefits of Small Group PT.

You still get the individual Coaching, adaptations and support you need, but you also get the buzz, conversation and connection that comes from training alongside other people in a small group.

Different people, plenty in common.🩷

Before most of Edinburgh is awake.. our Coaches are already at Gym on the Square. 🌅

A few weeks ago, valued member captured a little behind the scenes look at what members don’t usually get to see.

From 6am in , we’re welcoming members into Small Group Personal Training sessions, with just 2–4 people per Coach.

But long before that first session begins, there’s lots happening behind the scenes in preparation-

Opening up, cleaning the gym, setting up equipment, stocking our complimentary fresh fruit trolley and toiletry baskets, reading over any relevant member notes in advance and making sure everything is ready for members walking through the doors.

Our team put a huge amount of time and care into the little details before, during and after every session with the aim of making sure every single member leaves feeling 10x better than when they arrived. ❤️

Very grateful to have such an amazing team who go above and beyond to create a fitness experience like no other in Edinburgh City Centre.

When it rains, it pours.. ☔️ A dreich day in Edinburgh's West End

But come rain or shine, our members keep showing up to Small Group PT 1–3 times a week. 🏋🏻‍♂️🏋🏻‍♂️

Most of our members classed themselves as “not a gym person” before finding us.

Now, thanks to Coaching + Community in Edinburgh City Centre, they’ve learned how to make fitness (in particular strength training ) an integrated and enjoyable part of their week, and something they stick to long term.

If you don’t know what to do or how to do it, we’ve got a gym full of people who can relate to how that feels.

And a team of Coaches who would be delighted to take away any gymxiety by showing you what to do and how to do it! 🏋🏻‍♂️💪🏼

A special thanks from team member .foster_ 💪🏼⛰️ who completed Edinburgh 7 Hills Challenge on Friday for with , member .murrayy and Team .free - Collectively this challenge has raised 77K AND COUNTING for Cancer Research

We have gifted all participants a Small Group PT session as a well done for an amazing achievement.

As Micheala tell us - “strength training allows me to keep taking part in challenges like this”

7 Hills,
1 dreich day
AND an additional 10kg for our Micheala and Kim in military body armour - which, as Micheala put it,

“that’s nothing compared to the weight people battling cancer and their families endure.”

Despite the weather, the team soldiered on 🫡

1. Calton Hill
2. Castle Rock / Edinburgh Castle
3. Corstorphine Hill
4. Easter Craiglockhart Hill
5. Braid Hill
6. Blackford Hill
7. Arthur’s Seat

Starting and finishing at Calton Hill, with the other 6 acting as checkpoints. This was roughly 2,200 ft / 670 m of ascent and descent (all with the bonnie scottish weather to contend with ☔️⛰️)

A huge well done to every single participant who took part and helped raise such an incredible amount for an amazing cause.

Go team Swurf 💪🏼🩷
