Who would have thought a few weeks back that one of Kerry or Armagh would be an absentee from the 2026 All-Ireland Quarter finals.

Both provincial winners and both fancied as top contenders for major honours. The reality is they are both currently still in the reckoning, but of course only one of them will be progressing into what will be another tough day out against one of the awaiting quarter finals quartet.

Some offence has been taken at how Louth's "lucky" win or "fluke" goal was described, but in reality Louth were right there with Armagh and there was no luck involved in an excellent 70 minute performance that put them in a position to win it in such dramatic fashion.

Just like the neutral pundits commented, Armagh will not be happy with their game management in the dying embers. A trait normally synonymous with the side.

Kerry on the other hand, have so far suffered two heavy defeats against another serious contender in Donegal. Albeit one was the league and the other has the caveat of a 15 v 14 matchup for the entirety of the second half. The Kingdom's injury situation has been a hot topic of discussion for most of the championship campaign but it would appear that they are now finding a little bit more joy in that regard.

It is a mammoth task for Armagh to travel to Killarney after such a bruising defeat and a 6 day turnaround. Bizarrely, it is the Orchard men who will now have to enter into "siege mentality" mode for this one following a spate of games where that was exactly the M.O of the opposition teams.

The neutrals are licking their lips, one of the top contenders are packing up early for the summer.

Armagh's reward for a string of mishaps in the closing minutes against Louth is a long journey away to the Kingdom this weekend.

There was an air of inevitability to the draw producing this outcome... Armagh fans everywhere after the Louth defeat "we're getting drawn away to Kerry aren't we?"

One of the top three rated teams in the country will now not make it as far as the 2026 All-Ireland Quarter finals such is the nature of the new format.

The draw in full:
Dublin v Donegal
Monaghan v Westmeath
Kerry v Armagh
Mayo v Meath

With Armagh and Westmeath both losing, every team in Ireland has now lost at least once in championship football in 2026 in what seems to be a wide open race for Sam Maguire.

Here are the 3 talking points

No credit taken away from Louth's own exploits during the 70 minutes. They were excellent and caused problems for the Orchard men throughout.
But Armagh looked off the usual high standards at times. That said, the job appeared to be done but a game management malfunction on more than one occasion in the final two minutes was uncharacteristic of a side who are usually very astute in that department.

It seems somewhat bizarre that a timekeeping rule relating to the ho**er is not applied consistently across the entire competition. In a high stakes Round 2A championship match, the ball is in flight towards the goal AFTER the clock (both in the ground and on TV) turned 70:00.
Had a ho**er been in place, like every other game, the goal would not have stood.

It was mere seconds and inches away from a very simple continuation of the season for Armagh - A two week break and an All-Ireland quarter final in Croke Park. But such is sport and the new format, an away trip to Kerry, Dublin or Meath is now possible, also possible of course is a home game in the Athletic Grounds to any of these sides. All eyes will now turn to the Round 3 draw

The venue may be small but the atmosphere will not take a hit. Armagh fans queuing from 10am to get into the 1500 capacity seated stand... It was already half full by the time the turnstiles opened ๐Ÿ˜‚

Massive credit to Inniskeen, it's some facility for a club to have developed over the years.

A lucky, 6000 or so, ticketed patrons will make their way to Inniskeen today as Louth will look to add another upset to the weekend's results.
Connacht champions Roscommon have made an early exit to this year's All-Ireland series, as have Derry with Donegal surprisingly having to go again in Round 3 after an unexpected defeat in Ballybofey.

In the past 3 seasons of the group stage, Armagh have successfully navigated their way directly to the All-Ireland Quarter final without the need for an extra game; and in the new 2026 format will try to do exactly that with a win over Louth.

So far, Armagh have held firm, whilst others have wobbled. Donegal's superb league form has since been up-ended twice at the hands of Down and Cork. And Kerry have been well beaten on two occasions against Donegal in recent months. Another challenger Galway came up short in the Connacht final against a Roscommon outfit who will not feature again this summer.

So far Louth have had "Jekyll and Hyde" like performances against Dublin; very flat the first day out and considerably better on day two. With a siege mentality expected, the latter version of Louth is the more likely.
But if Armagh can continue to hold firm in Inniskeen, which is no mean feat, they will be mere onlookers of Monday's Round 3 draw.

Kieran McGeeney has named the same 15 players to take to the, perhaps resized, Inniskeen field on Sunday against the neighbouring "Wee County".

The odd positional re-jig will barely be noticeable in a versatile and fluid style of play.

Whispers that Andrew Murnin will not be risked after being cautiously withdrawn last day out, so far at least, appear not to be correct.. but these things can always change on the day.

The reality is, no-one on the starting 15 has dropped their levels recently, which is why the talent stacking the bench can't get starts.. that and impact.. which is extremely important in the modern game.

A quarter final place and a valuable week away from action is the prize for winning this Round 2A encounter.

Check out the Inside Game Podcast with Louth GAA guest Darren Clarke for a preview of the game.

2B or not 2B? Not 2B? 2A then.

Four matches on Saturday and four matches on Sunday in another bumper weekend of football action.

Round 2B is straight-up knockout football and some big hitters are packing up early for the summer.

Round 2A is a direct route to the quarter finals but if not it also offers a second bite at the cherry.

Five televised games across the two days. No doubt RTE viewing figures will be high on Sunday at 1pm with so few Louth and Armagh supporters in attendance in Inniskeen.

Great catching up with former Louth footballer Darren Clarke as we looked ahead to the Louth GAA v Armagh GAA Round 2A match. A top man.

A nice chat about his playing days with Louth, Ardee and Leinster as well as playing club football in Dublin and good build-up to the game in Inniskeen.
