When Laura told me she’d bought her wedding dress and it didn’t zip up, I knew we had work to do.

She’d just got engaged. Two young kids. By every measure she should’ve felt amazing, instead she felt totally sh*t about herself.

Women are not small men.

Your physiology changes throughout the month, and expecting your body to perform exactly the same every single day isn’t realistic.

As oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate across your cycle, you may notice changes in energy, recovery, sleep, cravings, body temperature, and training performance. That’s normal.

The goal isn’t to push harder through every phase. The goal is to understand what’s happening and adapt accordingly.

🔴 Menstrual Phase
Recovery first. Prioritise sleep, hydration, iron-rich foods, and gentle movement if that’s what your body needs.

⚡ Follicular Phase
Oestrogen rises and many women experience improved energy, recovery, and resilience to training stress. This is often a great time to challenge yourself in the gym.

🚀 Ovulation
Many women feel strong, powerful, and confident during this phase. Use that energy to push performance, but remember that more isn’t always better.

🌙 Luteal Phase
As progesterone increases, body temperature rises and recovery demands can be higher. Focus on quality training, adequate protein, smart carbohydrate intake, and prioritising recovery.

Your cycle isn’t something to fight against.

It’s valuable feedback from your body.

Stop judging yourself for not feeling the same every week of the month. Learn to work with your physiology instead of against it.
