(318)

Located only 13 miles from the centre of London The Addington Golf Club is a world class golf course just waiting to be discovered. Designed in 1912 by John Frederick Abercromby (Aber) who was accredited as being 'one of the finest architects in all of golf', The Addington is a masterpiece of inland golf.

Just like The Odyssey, some courses are much better viewed on IMAX than the regular screen.

The restored 7th green isn't just a talking point, it's a target that demands genuine thought and strategy when the pin sits in the back half, as Frank Pont explains.

The cascading 16th is an impressive tee shot overlooking London, but the fun of the approach can often be overlooked.

The semi-blind nature of the shot makes golfers uncomfortable and draws the eye to the huge hollow on the right. A great example of the danger being visible and the ideal line being obscured.

Sunrises here have never been better.

Tree removal ensures light fills the course from dawn to dusk, benefiting not just the aesthetics, but agronomy and playability as well.

Sometimes less is more. JF Abercromby was known for his sparing use of bunkers, and added them over several years having watched people play the course over and over.

We only have 37 of them. Enough to invoke strategy into approach shots, but few enough to ensure the golfer faces a multitude of options across interesting ground when missing a green.

The scale of the restored 7th green has to be seen to be believed. But one thing's for sure: it's so much fun to play.

Width off the tee makes the course more enjoyable for the high handicap while forcing the scratch player to think about strategy and the angle they want to attack the pin from.

The fifth is a great example of that. We don't want players spending their round looking for balls. That time is better spent thinking about the strategy in front of them.
