Cranleigh RFC is a family-friendly, community-based club, ready to welcome new players & supporters

NEW PLAYERS of all ages & abilities are welcome at Cranleigh Rugby Club, so please feel free to come down & join us for a free introduction to the Club &/or the game. Senior training is on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 7pm at the Club with fully floodlit facilities. Come down to keep fit & have fun with no immediate pressure to play. Overseas players visiting the area are also always welcome for a run out for the Club. Cranleigh also run an extremely successful Mini & Junior section who train on a Sunday morning. Wild Cranes Soar to a Winning Start Against Littlehampton!

The Wild Cranes travelled down to the coast to kick off their season against Littlehampton Lionesses. It was a very windy day, but the stunning views across Arundel made up for it!
Seven months on from their last league meeting, both sides had changed considerably, setting the scene for an exciting first game of the season.

The match started cautiously, with both teams getting used to the strong winds, which played havoc with passing and led to a few handling errors. Play remained largely in the middle of the pitch until Hannah spotted a gap and darted through, taking the Cranes to within five metres of the line. Unfortunately, Littlehampton managed to turn the ball over.

The Lionesses were quick and well-drilled over the ball, so the Cranes knew they needed to respond. Bex galloped up the field and popped the ball to Evie, who looked destined to score the opening try, only for the referee to bring play back for offside.

Eloísa made sure Littlehampton didn't enjoy possession for long, winning the ball back and getting it out to the backs. Following a scrum, Evie linked up with Hannah, who broke through from 20 metres out to score the opening try!
0–5.

The second quarter started strongly, with Dempsey crashing the ball up the field to set Hannah up for her second try of the game.
0–10.

Littlehampton responded with a slick series of passes to the blindside, making good ground with some powerful carries. However, another turnover gave the Cranes their opportunity. Joss powered through the defence before popping the ball out to the backs, with Evie crashing over in the right-hand corner. Mel, battling the mega winds, added the conversion to make it 0–17.

Straight from the kick-off, a penalty gave Littlehampton the chance to put the Cranes' defence under pressure. They took it quickly, and another penalty marched the Cranes further back. Evie won the ball at the breakdown and offloaded to Mel, who broke away and raced halfway down the pitch. Beautiful hands from Rachel and Esther then set up Joss to stretch over the line. Mel once again nailed the conversion, taking the score to 0–24.

The Cranes weren't finished there! Following the next kick-off, Tabitha picked up from the scrum and went on the attack, setting the platform for Joss to cross the line for her second try. Mel added the extras to round off a fantastic spell of scoring. 0–31.

The second half began with Littlehampton showing they meant business. The Cranes were caught napping after the break, and when the Lionesses were awarded a penalty, they took it quickly. With the Cranes caught standing still, Littlehampton slipped through to score and convert. 7–31.

The response was immediate. From the kick-off, Eloísa stormed up the pitch before being brought down by a perfectly timed tap tackle. Bex secured the ball and powered through to score, with Mel now seemingly in tune with the wind as she added another conversion. 7–38.

Another penalty gave Littlehampton the opportunity to strike back, and once again the Cranes were caught a step behind. The Lionesses broke through and raced three-quarters of the pitch to score and convert.
14–38.

Dempsey made sure the Cranes weren't going down without a fight, dragging three players along with her as she powered up the field from the kick-off. However, discipline began to slip, and four consecutive penalties saw the Cranes marched backwards, undoing much of the ground they had just gained. Bex was lucky to escape with just a few firm words from the referee!

With the ball back in hand, the Cranes moved it out to the backs, only for Littlehampton to intercept. A perfectly timed offload helped the Lionesses cross the line again, narrowing the score to 19–38.

Straight from the kick-off, Littlehampton turned the ball over and once again looked dangerous as they surged up the pitch. Rachel, however, had other ideas, producing a try-saving tackle to bring their attack to a halt.

The game restarted with a line-out, where Phoebe set Esther up for a lovely run up the pitch. Bex was caught short of the line, but a penalty gave the Cranes another opportunity. Tabitha picked and went, powering over the whitewash, with Mel adding yet another conversion. 19–45.

There was still time for one more! From the kick-off, Lou stormed up the pitch, and after another penalty, Hannah broke through to score the Cranes' final try of the game. 19–50.
A fantastic performance from the Wild Cranes to start the season, with plenty of tries, some brilliant individual efforts and a strong team effort to secure the win!

A massive well done to Esther, Eve, Lou and Phoebe, who all made their official Wild Cranes debuts. An extra special mention to Phoebe, who made her first senior appearance and ensured we had two Barrauds on the pitch at the same time… now we just need one more!

Match Report

The match, played at Battersea Park in torrential rain on a substandard pitch, was one for the hardy Cranleigh spectators, who witnessed a game that looked lost until the final 12 minutes.

London Media started the match exactly like Cranleigh's previous three opponents: with a strong pack and two centres acting like battering rams. They took the game to Cranleigh, putting them under intense pressure right from the kick-off. It took only 12 minutes for Media to exploit gaps in the Cranleigh midfield and score under the posts. Media added a second try with the same efficiency within another eight minutes, leaving Cranleigh starved of possession at 14-0.

Gradually, the Cranleigh pack began to take control in the tight exchanges. However, with Joe Taylor receiving a yellow card, they struggled to make a significant impression. Even when they did gain territory, poor ex*****on at their own lineout halted their momentum. Max Chruisciel was introduced at scrum-half, and in the 35th minute, he outpaced the Media defence with an amazing run to score out wide. Half-time: 14 – 5.

The second half started much like the first, with Media on the front foot and battering Cranleigh. Although the Cranleigh pack remained dominant in the tight, Media moved the ball away quickly and looked dangerous at every opportunity. The Cranleigh defence worked tirelessly, but it was not enough to prevent Media's number 12 from adding to their score.

At this stage, all looked lost for Cranleigh. For 20 minutes, they could not clear their own half. Eventually, Media began to tire and conceded a series of penalties. Having lost patience, the referee issued quick-fire yellow cards to three Media players. Cranleigh did not escape discipline either, with Jamie White leaving the field for a swinging arm.

Despite the disruptions, the Cranleigh forwards surged up the pitch, giving Media a taste of their own medicine. Charlie Pankhurst finished off a well-executed maul to score. Soon after, Max Chruisciel scored another brilliant individual try, once again outpacing the Media defence.

The Cranleigh pack then camped on the Media 22-metre line and drove the ball toward the try line. When Media collapsed the maul, the referee awarded a penalty try, leveling the score at 24-24 with just two minutes remaining.

Immediately from the restart, a fired-up Cranleigh side mauled and splintered the Media pack, allowing Luke Fielden to secure the final try and a crucial bonus point. Final score: 24-29.

The squad was overjoyed, and rightly so, having fought back for most of the match to secure the win. Great credit goes to the pack, who eventually got the better of the Media forwards, and to Luke Bargman, whose positional kicking put Cranleigh back on the attack late in the game. Considering another round of injuries and selection unavailabilities from the previous week, this was a magnificent team effort where nobody ever gave up.

Cranes go Wet and Wild in London.

Old rivals London Media host Cranleigh in what looks to be a game for the purists. With very little between the sides in the last 5 meetings, yet Media coming up top 4 times. With a few enforced changes due to injury, the depth of the cranes shines through. Bring on the rain!

Cranleigh Colts 64–0 Guildfordians

A return to Fortress Wildwood saw the home side collect the spoils against old foes Guildfordians in emphatic fashion. Even with a couple of last-minute changes and no subs available, the Surrey Hills rugby outlaws made light work of the opposition in Round 3 of the Surrey League.

Guildfordians grew ever more tired of seeing the marauding Cranleigh battering rams of Carlo “The Goose”, Dom P, George W and Big Joe G heading in their direction, with Joe capping a fine performance with a muscular try after being denied a few minutes earlier.

Rory S decided not to let the half-backs have all the kicking duties, adding a couple of expert touch-finders to his rampaging open-field play.

And oh boy, did the back row mean business on Sunday. Dylan “Vorhees” S, try-scorer Matt Matt (so good they named him twice) and the barnstorming, earth-quaking, bone-breaking Hugo M — doing his finest Courtney Lawes impression — savaged the opposition at the breakdown and in the loose until the white flags were too numerous to count.

The backs enjoyed an autumnal romp with ball in hand. The half-backs, Dante and Rowan, kept the ball alive wherever possible, allowing “Calamari” Will to batter his way over for his regulation brace of tries and the much-missed Oscar H to scream over for a hat-trick as if he’d never been away — although he did get a shiner for his efforts.

The ever-improving and increasingly physical Loken E crashed over for the first of two maiden tries after slick hands through the backs. His second came from a cross-field kick by Will S. Whether intentional or not, the young Bokke made mincemeat of several attempted tackles to touch down in the corner.

Syd S signed off his birthday appearance with an excellent performance at full-back (the jury is still out on whether he enjoyed his cake and sing-song afterwards), while Rory W battered his way — and himself — down the opposition flanks all afternoon.

Cranleigh Harriers edge past St Francis in Season Opener.

Cranleigh Harriers kicked off their Counties 4 Sussex West campaign with a home fixture against St Francis, knowing they would need to be on their game after narrowly beating them in a recent friendly.

The opening 20 minutes were largely played between the 22s, with the majority of the action taking place in St Francis territory. The Harriers’ pack quickly established dominance in the scrum, although the line out was a little hit and miss, regularly finding the opposition’s towering number five in the middle. Despite the perfect conditions, the early exchanges were frantic, with both sides guilty of unforced errors.

Eventually, Cranleigh made their way to within 10 metres of the St Francis line. The scrum went to work, driving aggressively and causing absolute mayhem over the line. The referee had little hesitation in awarding a penalty try, giving the Harriers a deserved 7–0 lead.

Later in the first half, Cranleigh’s forwards thought they had added to their tally as they picked and drove their way towards the line, only to be held up under the posts. Following the resulting goal line drop out, the Harriers regathered possession and produced perfect ball for their backs to exploit. Archie cut a beautiful line and carved through the defence, only to be denied by some desperate last-ditch defending just short of the line.

A couple of changes at the break saw Big Pete B add some extra weight and stature to the pack, which continued to dominate the set piece. However, a succession of high tackles began to cost the Harriers dearly, allowing St Francis to march from their own five metre line all the way back to the Cranleigh 22. Ill discipline was proving an expensive habit, handing the visitors valuable territory and opportunities.

To their credit, the Harriers defended magnificently, holding out against wave after wave of St Francis attacks before finally managing to clear their lines.

With 10 minutes remaining, Cranleigh looked to have sealed the deal when captain Sam intercepted on the St Francis 10 metre line. With the try line beckoning and a seemingly certain score under the posts on the cards, Sam was cruelly thwarted by what appeared to be a sudden patch of quicksand. His legs began to give way, and he was hauled down agonisingly short.

Jamie White was following up in support and looked to have been illegally tackled as he played the ball from the back of the ruck, seemingly leaving Toby with a simple finish. Unfortunately, the resulting scramble ended with a knock on, and the chance was gone.

St Francis refused to give up and, with the Harriers down to 14 men, continued to press. Their persistence finally paid off in the 79th minute when they crossed in the far corner. The conversion was missed, and the final whistle sounded shortly afterwards.

It was a hard fought victory for the Harriers, built on a dominant forward performance and some resolute defence when it mattered most.

There were plenty of positives across the park. Toby Ford enjoyed an excellent maiden outing, doing himself proud, while Archie showed real pace and talent whenever he found space. Dan McCreath was solid at full back, putting in a dependable defensive performance.

The forwards were the standout unit, however, destroying the St Francis scrum and consistently disrupting their line out ball. Jake Shayler was deservedly awarded Man of the Match, with notable performances also coming from Ben Terson, Finn and Flynn.

It was also Flynn’s final match for the time being as he heads off to serve King and country. Everyone at the Harriers wishes him well and looks forward to welcoming him back when he returns.

The campaign is up and running with a hard-earned win. Next up, the Harriers head away to Shoreham, where they’ll be looking to build on this promising start.

Cranleigh faced a Kingston side full of strong runners in the forwards and backs for nearly the whole game. Only three minutes in, they blasted upfield and, from a drive, scored centrally and converted.

They kept up the pressure on Cranleigh and, for the first time this season, put the pack under pressure in the tight scrums. On 15 minutes, the Kingston scrum half broke away from a maul to score -again converted. 0-14.

The task for Cranleigh was set, and they started to gain some decent possession but couldn't put any real threat to Kingston's excellent defense, only to concede another try when their center 12 found a big hole in the middle of the field and scored under the posts. 0-21.

Cranleigh, however, got back to the Kingston line with only three minutes to go in the half and scored from a maul converted by Rhys Thomas. Half-time 7-21.

Cranleigh started the second half with a big hill to climb, but with great energy, they pushed Kingston to defend. From a great maul from a lineout, Luke Fielden scored, and everyone accepted it. However, the Referee was in such a bad position that he disallowed the try. Not surprisingly, this deflated Cranleigh, and Kingston took advantage, moving the ball quickly out wide to score 7-28.

Cranleigh faced more trouble when they received two yellow cards within 15 minutes in the half for Liam Kennedy and Alex Basson. But from broken play, Geoff Noonan scored, only for Kingston No. 12 to respond near the end of the game, shooting through another big hole in the center of the field to score. Final score: 12-35.

Take nothing away from a very strong Kingston side, which played simple rugby and ran strong lines in every department. Cranleigh went down 0-14 very early, and the disallowed try gave them too much to do against the best side they have played so far this season. Together with five changes from last week's efficient side, it had an effect. Cranleigh now know the strength of the league but shouldn't be too disheartened, as we know they can play better than this.
