Broadstreet Rugby Club Broadstreet Rugby Football Club at The Ivor Preece Fields Broadstreet's clubhouse has full wheelchair access on the ground floor and disabled facilities.

We are very proud of our rugby club facilities here at Broadstreet Rugby Club Coventry, and can boast that our complex is set in over 40 acres of professionally landscaped grounds and woodland, our complex is situated in one of the most picturesque locations in the region. These rugby club facilities allows us to provide the kind of playing environments unequalled by others. Players train twice a

week on Tuesday and Thursday Evenings from 6:30 PM on our two floodlit pitches. Daylight games we have a choice of 6 full sized rugby pitches. These excellent rugby facilities have been utilised by Coventry And District Union, Warwickshire RFU, Midlands RFU and the England Rugby for training sessions and full games in early 2008 for England Deaf Rugby Union in their matches against The Welsh Deaf Rugby Union in February and March saw the visit of The Scottish Deaf Rugby Union XV.

The Academicals and Originals are set!

The Accies (U23s) will head into the new season once more being organized by Ollie Evans but this year he will be splitting the duties with Andries Van Der Merwe who is hoping to transition his graduating Colts side into the senior section of the club.

The U23s will be competing once more in Warwickshire 1 against the best of the Warwickshire 2nd XVs where hopefully they can build on last year's 4th place finish and take top spot. We are also expecting the side to grow with a new influx of Students arriving at Uni in September and hopefully more talented lads will filter up into the 1st and Lions squads.

With this in mind we are also hoping to get more Originals games on (social XV) and are targeting a friendly game a month for them with Andries leading the way on delivering an occasional 4th XV. With the club bucking the trend of rugby's decline at the moment by continuing to grow our player numbers we are excited that there is a chance that we may get 5 sides out once a month with the Colts also looking strong.

The Women's team are also finding their own successes and looking like they will continue to grow their own numbers so there is a genuine opportunity to have 6 sides out on a weekend as they enter National Championship 3!

Thatcher to lead Lions into new season

Nick Thatcher will take control of the Lions squad on training and match days heading into the 2026/27 Season. His mandate last season was to lead the Lions to promotion back into Counties 2 but unfortunately his performances meant that he kept getting himself picked for the 1st XV!

Going into next season he has categorically stated that 1st XV selection is well and truly off the cards and he has signed off on that part of his career with the promotion. His full focus now is to get the Lions back up to Counties 1 and he is looking forward to developing players, winning games and working with the 1st XV coaches to create a strong pathway which feeds the 1st XV success for years to come. A club stalwart there is no better person to maintain that production line having been one of the most successful players the club has had come off of it.

He will be supported by Neil Lightowler who stepped in last season to manage the Lions as they rampaged through the league and secured promotion. His mandate this year is to work with our colts and 3rd XV coaches to help transition players through the club pathway and in to 1st XV contention. He will be supporting Thatch on match days and we are hoping he can sprinkle some of the gold dust we had last season on this year's campaign!

Coaches for 26/27 Season are Locked in!

Starting with the 1st XV coaching group announcement we are delighted to confirm that last year's promotion winning team are all staying

Head Coach Lloyd Warner had this to say

"When I joined from Nat 1 in the 24/25 season I knew there would be work to do rebuilding the culture & player base after a tough season of losses which relegated the club the previous year. It was not going to be a quick turnaround & so I always had in mind that it would be a 3-5 year project for me. I'm ecstatic that we were able to gain promotion back to Level 5 this season but for me the real success was that we had secured buy-in throughout the entire senior section & this translated into wins on a Saturday afternoon. It was having 30+ EVERY single Tuesday & Thursday which allowed the coaches to really develop players & create an atmosphere that new players wanted to be a part of, this was evident in the way the Lions (2nd XV) also won their league so comfortably.

It's an easy choice for me to ask my coaching team to stay for next season & it was a quick positive back in return. There are a few changes with Duncan Doherty stepping up from Lions coach to become my Assistant Coach with the 1st XV. His work has been invaluable to the club last season & his insight & commitment will be an asset for me on match days.

Pooley will continue as forwards & defence coach, his detail & driving of standards on training nights continues to be valued by our players who respect his delivery & experience. His natural leadership is evident in his role as Captain of Coventry RFC & this translates to our players who can see him practicing as he preaches when he coaches with a black eye or plays a champ game with broken ribs. He's got a long career in rugby ahead of him both on & off the pitch.

We have made our 2 most experienced players Player/coaches too. Rob Knox & Adam Peters have had long careers playing Champ rugby & their experience was invaluable during the Play off run. They were doing video analysis & on-field delivery already so this announcement just formalises the good work they were already doing & will be well received by our squad

The Lions League 26/27

Another exciting league for the Lions with some big challenges ahead. Local opposition like Southam, Clav and Harbury will add some derby day seasoning and Bromsgrove 2s will be another great game as we have been playing them at 2nd team level regularly for decades especially if it ties up with our 1st XV Bromsgrove fixtures

Droitwich were, not so long ago, a level 6 side and they will be looking to bounce straight back up and there will be some new match ups against clubs we haven't played before to look forward to.

Will Brucey be able to captain the pride to another promotion? Will Neil finally be recognized as the next Pep Guardiola? Will Sam Payne come back from Oz again? We will see but the talent is there for anything to happen

Player of the Season - Jevon Zikalala

Arriving at Coventry University and "looking to play some rugby" was a superb outcome for Broadstreet RFC this season when Jev rocked up to training in September. A product of a club between Rotherham and Barnsley, he has obviously had some great coaching growing up as his skill set and understanding of the game has been excellent.

He started his Street journey playing for the Accies (3rds) but quickly played his way in to Lions contention and was a regular starter in their successful league campaign. He didn't forget where he started though because he was always keen for a run out and jumped back into the Accies at the slightest opportunity when the fixtures allowed.

Jev's 1st season ended with a bang when he made his debut for the 1st XV in the Warwickshire Cup Final and scored a try. We've got him for at least another 2 seasons, as long as he completes his degree, so we look forward to seeing his continued development and hopefully a few more 1st XV tries!

End of Season - Lions edition

The Lions romped the league this year & so, with many positives, it was going to be tough to identify individual efforts. However, looking at the winners it is obvious why they won, not only outstanding as individuals but also the drivers of the team's identity, ambition & willingness to play for each other.

Adam Bruce - Coach's Player

Brucey has enough talent to make him a National League player but his desire to cross-field kick, chip & chase, show & go instead of using the 5 man overlap has always been a frustration for coaches & a delight to himself. However as Captain this season, & probably much to Brucey's own frustration, he has embodied the type of servant leadership that has allowed his team to focus, flourish and express themselves whilst he has picked up the boring details of putting out the flags, collecting kit etc etc. But was Brucey just a glorified waterboy this year? No! He was still one of the strongest players, 1st name on the team sheet & on-field leader. Would the Lions have performed as well as they did this year without him, absolutely not....& for that reason he is well deserved Player of the Year

Louis Pointon - Player's Player

The award given by your teammates is arguably the most flattering & in Pointon the squad have recognized the physicality and athleticism of a player giving 100% every match & reaping the rewards. Whether playing out of position at flanker or in his natural position at centre or outside backs, Louis guarantees tries, big hits & regular line breaks. Like Liam OB the guy doesn't really say much but his leadership shines through his actions. Like Brucey, he has been called up to the 1sts regularly but it is clear he is a Lion 1st & foremost & that is why the squad have voted for him.

Jake Clayton - Young Player

Jake came straight out of colts & into the 1st XV this season, which as an 18 year old, the engine room of Street's pack is a hell of a place to make your mark. But his attitude and talent merited the opportunity & whilst playing for the Lions he was able to showcase these attributes to a greater extent. A great 1st season of senior rugby with many more to come!

End of Season Awards Night Results

After a long season that finished on May 15th, Broadstreet held their End of Season Awards night and here is the round up....First up the 1st XV

Coach's Player - Liam O'Brien

As an 18 year old debutant straight out of colts and into National 2 back in 2018 Liam OB was always capable of being a top level player. Now 26, this season he has shown such a consistency and commitment to his game that when combined with his natural talent was always going to result in him being one of the club's top performers. He is not the most vocal player so the fact that this year he was one of the team's most important leaders shows that he did his talking through action and set standards for other players through commitment (He played most of this season with an ankle the size of a grapefruit and barely mentioned it). A veteran warrior even though he's in his mid-20s and well deserved player of the season.

Player's Player - Ollie Farquharson

Playing his first year of adult rugby with a bit of pedigree from Coventry academy and Princethorpe School we signed Ollie just hoping that all those age group tries would translate into a few adult rugby tries......well 34 of them in 24 games was above and beyond expectation. Bags of talent and speed with a bright future in the game is guaranteed, his conduct on and off the pitch has been exemplary and his desire to learn and grow has obviously caught the eye of his team mates who voted in spades for him to win the most desired accolade a big thumbs up from your team mates!

Young Player - Theo Hutchinson

Theo joined the club as a skinny ho**er and started off in the 3rd XV straight out of school boy rugby. 3 seasons later he is one of the first names on the 1st XV team sheet but.....on the wing! A brilliant positional transition complimenting his speed and athleticism but his background in the forwards means that he is the hardest working winger in the league with a kick chase and defensive skill set that not many outside backs have. He has scored a few tries too and isn't adverse to a solo length of the pitch run to score. A brilliant Clubman we hope will stay with us till he stops playing!

As we come to the End of Season Awards on Saturday we take stock of a successful season and how each one of our teams in the senior section has progressed.

The club is looking stronger than it has for a few years and we can celebrate the reasons why that is so
