Let’s Talk Osteoarthritis 🦴

Osteoarthritis is a common condition which, contrary to popular belief, can affect people of all ages. I have clients in their early 40’s who have the early stages of degeneration.

In a nutshell, Osteoarthritis is the breaking down of the articular cartilage.

Normally, subchondral bone, underneath the articular cartilage, is supposed to slide and glide and move freely.
It is nourished in synovial fluid and the articular cartilage needs this nourishment to stay happy.

When you have disruptions in synovial fluid, in addition, to bone degeneration, the breakdown of cartilage often has an inflammatory response.

My main focus with my OA clients is to get them to move as optimally as possible, creating the best environment possible to keep that nourishment for the articular cartilage, so that we have less breakdown, therefore reducing inflammation and requirement for surgical interventions.

Ultimately, degeneration often begins due to compensation for lack of mobility, strength and function elsewhere in the body.

It is helpful to assess a clients’ movement regularly, to identify and address these small, but often significant things.
For example, I’m keen to look at ankle mobility and muscular biases in the legs, when assessing a knee OA client.

The big take home …

Appropriate movement strategies help to flush synovial fluid into the joint, nourishing the cartilage and keeping it happy.

High Flyer Of The Month
Jane Joyce 🏆

Jane began her Pilates journey with me, around 18 months ago.

Jane enjoys an active lifestyle and wanted to support this with a restorative movement practice. I am so glad she came to me 🤗

Jane’s progress from a complete beginner to where she is now, is remarkable.

Each week she attends her sessions and is keen to learn and improve. The level of consistency she has shown is first class.

Jane is a ray of sunshine and an absolute pleasure to teach.

Congratulations and keep up the great work Jane 👏

Consistency Is Everything 👌

As we head into a new term of classes it’s a big ‘high five’ to all of you.
All classes are fully booked 🙌🏻

The sessions are delivered in 6 week blocks to provide a consistent and progressive Pilates programme.

Many of you have been moving with me for years and this is 100% the secret to your success.
You are admirably investing in yourselves.

The BIG take home …

Consistency is not about making monumental strides in a short span, it's about the accumulation of small, persistent efforts over time.
Consistency builds habits, and habits are the foundation of long-term benefits.

Keep showing up, your future self is watching 🙌🏻

Thoracic Spine Mobility & Breathing.

The spine is a dynamic, highly adaptable structure that affects almost every aspect of how we move, breathe and feel.

Mobility in the thoracic spine is essential when it comes to having good breathing mechanics.

Unfortunately, modern lifestyle and poor breathing patterns can contribute to this mid-back area becoming very fixed or immobile, leading to a plethora of issues.

It is essential for normal expansion of the ribcage while we breathe. When we take a large inhalation, the thoracic spine extends allowing the ribs to create more space for the lungs to expand.

When we exhale, the thoracic spine flexes in order to return to its resting position.
We need to extend well in the thoracic to improve the amount of air that can fill the lungs.

This is important for regulation of the parasympathetic nervous system as well as the cardiovascular system.

In our sessions we use breathing to facilitate optimal movements of the spine.
This combination improves the function of the spine, how well we breathe and how good we feel 🫶

Pilates Apparatus…
It’s All About You 🫶

Using Pilates apparatus is a great way to compliment Physiotherapy, for a low-impact recovery and injury rehabilitation.

When taught on a 1:1 basis, you get sessions tailored to your specific needs and goals.

We focus on precision and control, with all eyes on your technique and form.

The Pilates Reformer.

The reformer accommodates a full range of motion, which is great for increasing flexibility while building strength.
The pushing and pulling with the arms and legs against the resistance of the springs, carriage and body weight makes this a unique strength building, full-body workout that’s different from the regular Pilates exercises performed on the mat.

The Cadillac.

The Cadillac is the largest of the Pilates apparatuses. It resembles a four-poster twin bed, raised off the floor and outfitted with a variety of metal eyelets, springs, a wooden grab bar, and a Trapeze.

The stable base of the Cadillac and its serial attachments, offers opportunity to explore more varieties of movement. Perfect for rehabilitation and also for those more advanced clients.

The Pilates Chair

The Pilates chair is such a fab piece of versatile and portable apparatus.
It has a seat, a pedal, and springs, which determine the resistance you work.
The split pedal option is great for progressing on the standing exercises and balance work.

Concentration 🧠

In a fast paced world demanding your attention at every opportunity, it is important to train the mind to be present.

The Pilates Principle of Concentration is the key to mind-body connection.

When you fully concentrate on your entire body and your every breath, you are present and aware in the moment, bringing full attention and good technique to each movement.

Developing awareness of your body through concentration enables your movements to become more precise, allowing your mind and body to respond better to the effort required.

In a world where stress levels are often unmanaged, the concentration required in Pilates practice, can bring a mental break from the world outside.

Commit to your time, switch off the phone, turn off the watch and emerse yourself in the moment of each movement.

This simple practice will help you leave your sessions feeling revitalised, refreshed and focused.
